For the JSDF otaku among us,

New Japanese ceremonial and marching band uniforms.

Revised for the first time in 50 years.

The two on the left are the old ones, the three on the right are the new ones. The full white one is summer version, the ones in navy blue are winter versions.

Oh man, look at that collar. It'd fit right in on Yamamoto.

I can't help but think that these are an intentional reversion from the current US-style uniforms to one that's much more like their old Imperial gear, albeit with a bit of a sci-fi twist. I'm almost surprised the guys on the right aren't carrying Arisakas instead of Garands.

Seems to me like these uniforms are a statement that they're taking their balls back.

There's a fair amount of saber rattling going on, especially in respects to North Korea, who's been pushing the envelope by launching rockets and missiles that land in Japanese waters.
America's been pushing them to rearm for a long time now as well, because the Japanese have proven themselves to be really good at killing Chinese, and we want to be able to shake that stick at China to stop them from getting too uppity.

It's red for the same reason the Japanese flag has a big red circle in the middle of it, and so the white summer uniform would have both national colors.

The buttons and angle are probably a callback to pre-WWII uniforms, as is the high collar with insignia. They can't just bring the old uniform back because it would piss pretty much the whole world off (and they lost WWII wearing it anyway), but they can reference distinctive elements.

Pole here.
As much as I love Japan and no matter how passionate I am about Japanology, Poland comes first.

Same goes for citizenship. No matter how long I'd stay in Japan, even if I were to live there till my death, no matter who I'm married to, I'd never reject my Polish citizenship for a Japanese one.
Because I'll never be Japanese, even if I wanted to.
Poland is my mother, and I'll forever be a Pole.
As my fathers were before me and my children will be.
So help me God

They do look sharp for sure, if not slightly too "anime" themed. Reminds me of Mobile Suit Gundam uniforms, although its probably just that angled breast and stand-up collar. The way the trim on the front of the coat comes down to the center of the jacket is very flashy and nice looking.

Showa Japan wasn't strictly fascist but it ticked enough boxes to be called that. Nippon Kaigi itself isn't fascist but it's a ultra-nationalist, traditionalist, reactionary, revisionist party. Just the common usage of "fascist" gets the message through.

Well for one thing, Imperial Japan was not a one party state, it would have liked to be one I suppose.
It was a Monarchy, in fact you could even go so far and claim it to be a form of Theocracy considering that the Emperor was considered to be a divine being, that was mainly controlled by the military. So it was mainly a Military Dictatorship, of which many exist and have been around. It does not make one fascist. Fascism is related to many, including economics, and not just form of government.
To add to that, Japan was never really unified under a specific type of Military control. There was a lot of infighting between the IJN and the IJA, they wanted completely different things. And just like that, there were many people in Japan that did not stand with the Japanese ruling party.
Basically Imperial Japan was never a unified one party state that was ruled under one Military government, hell the IJA started the Second Sino war on its own.

I thought the Imperial Japanese economic model wasn't that far from what had been implemented in fascist states - some variant of state-directed capitalism.

In all honesty, I'd like to have a more detailed conversation about this at some point, but /jp/ isn't really the board for it and /his/ looks like a shitpile, so I guess this can just be one of those conversations that never happens.

Nippon Kaigi is revisionist, ultranationalist, traditionalist and reactionary. Combine that with an authoritarian streak and a hard-on for the military and you have something that is close enough to be called "fascist."

Is the word fascist debased by people throwing it around as a slur. Yes. This is not the case. Imperial Japan was very similar ideologically to their European allies and a handful of cosmetic differences doesn't mean YOU get to derail a conversation with pedantic hair-splitting.

>>16854061
Hoo boy lots of lies in this post.
>Imperial Japan was not a one party state
Political parties were banned in 1940, with socialist parties being banned well before that. Trade unions faced a similar fate.
>It was a Monarchy, in fact you could even go so far and claim it to be a form of Theocracy considering that the Emperor was considered to be a divine being,
Japan was first and foremost a military dictatorship. The Emperor rarely exercised any significant control over the army during the war. Furthermore, the Emperor himself has *never* been a truly infallible god-on-Earth despite mainstream appeals: he is Emperor solely because of his bloodline and throughout history ultranationalists have been perfectly comfortable with outright murdering any Emperor seen as insufficiently patriotic and installing a cousin as a puppet.
>So it was mainly a Military Dictatorship, of which many exist and have been around. It does not make one fascist. Fascism is related to many, including economics, and not just form of government
As has been said before, the Showa military government ticked off all the major boxes for fascism. This includes a corporatist state capitalism where everything is managed by a powerful central government that is supposed to bring together different classes to cooperate under the fascist umbrella.
>Japan was never really unified under a specific type of Military control. There was a lot of infighting between the IJN and the IJA
Factionalism did exist but, unlike what you're implying, it rarely led to different sections of Imperial armed forces fighting independently or each other. To the extent that it hurt the war effort, IJA-IJN rivalries were more over resources and prestige rather than ideology, something similar to the current rivalries within the U.S. intelligence community.
>And just like that, there were many people in Japan that did not stand with the Japanese ruling party.
Japan was a highly authoritarian state complete with its own secret police. Dissent was allowed but there were obvious red lines (legitimacy of the military government, socialism, abandoning the war effort) that were to be crossed at one's peril. Outside of officially sanctioned state violence, ultranationalists frequently murdered opposition politicians and outspoken socialists who went too far in their criticism.

There are differences between European fascist countries and Imperial Japan. But it's disingenuous to say that Tojo can't be called a fascist because his government wasn't a literal mirror of Fascist Italy.

>>16854098
The most accessible jumping off point for the topic is the first three volumes of Mizuki's Showa series. It is obviously an abbreviated history, but he touches on all of the main points and developments in the lead up to the fall of Taisho democracy. Drawn and Quarterly has a good translation, though the final volume (1953-1989) is comparatively weak.

Bank crashes (more than 20 in 1927) and the collapse of exports (silk, rice) in the 1930s that impoverished millions of farmers would have happened under an Imperial system or a democracy.
