My headcanon is that the female form is more facilitative for survival. A man-eating youkai will obviously have an easier time luring in their prey with a female (i.e. less threatening) image, as biological/physical traits aren't a factor due to magicky nonsense. The same goes for youkai who survive off of human interaction. Had Kogasa not been as cute as she is, for instance, it's unlikely she would have been as tolerated as she is in the village.

Is the population skew even canon? I know that it is canon that danmaku is primarily practiced by women and youkai, which explains the female dominated games. But when we see shots of the human village, it seems like there are an equal amount of men and women. In fact, nameless side manga characters are more likely to be male than female, from what I can tell.
