Previous thread: >>16717170

This thread is for the discussion and learning of Japanese with raw VNs, LNs, anime and manga.
If you have no interest in otaku media or want to request a translation, this is not the thread for you.

Let's have a nice thread by reporting and ignoring off-topic posts.

Reading is all you need to acquire a language.
http://www.sdkrashen.com/content/articles/2015_krashen_mason_can_second_language_acquirers__..._.pdf

Even one very good story book, in any format, can turn someone into a compulsive reader in that language.
http://www.sdkrashen.com/content/articles/2015_henken_krashen_naruto_breakthrough.pdf

You do not need to do any speaking practice and you do not need to do any "studying" (other than reading) to acquire a language.

Reading won't teach you nuances, nor will it give you the actual practice necessary to actually communicate verbally. You still need to actually practice it, just like how you need to actually read to learn to read.

I mean, if you never ever plan to verbally communicate, then I guess you're in the clear. If that were me, however, I don't feel like I could claim to be fluent in a language if all I can do is read it, as opposed to being able to speak and/or write.

Writing Japanese is an entirely different beast, sure, but you should at least be able to write all the Kyoiku Kanji.

>> No.16739652

>>16739623
>Reading won't teach you nuances,
Yes it will.
>nor will it give you the actual practice necessary to actually communicate verbally
This statement is correct, but communication practice can only bring you to communicate at the language level you have already acquired. You can go further in language acquisition through communication immersion, but this is slower than reading.

>If that were me, however, I don't feel like I could claim to be fluent in a language if all I can do is read it, as opposed to being able to speak and/or write.
The reason it's still considered fluency is because phonemic awareness and active memory are, essentially, short term skills, but passive acquired language is not. Someone who reaches the highest levels of comprehension in reading a language, as long as they know the sounds it's supposed to make (which I'll admit is a possible problem for foreign language learners of japanese the same way it is for english and french), will be able to turn that into conversational fluency in a matter of weeks of casual practice, not months.

>Writing Japanese is an entirely different beast, sure, but you should at least be able to write all the Kyoiku Kanji.
Not even the most devout teacher thinks that people learning japanese have to learn how to write unless they want to move there, and even then, only if they kind of vocation they're going to have requires it, or they want to.

No, it won't. You don't know how people actually speak until you actually speak with people. "Spoken language" used in books is often very inaccurate, and the only way to know if that's ACTUALLY how people talk is to either read an entirely different subject on it or to confirm with somebody.

>conversational fluency in a matter of weeks of casual practice
Okay, so you admit that you can't reach conversation fluency without practice. That's good.

>Not even the most devout teacher
Learning to read and write is considered a primary aspect of modern education. People who don't know how to read or write languages that they speak are considered illiterate. And yes, the definition for illiteracy says "or", not "and." This is, however, still a debated topic, of course.

On an academic note, how can you be considered fluent in a language if you can't properly produce it on your own? Fluency is defined as being able to produce language easily, smoothly, and effectively. If you can't produce, you can't communicate. If you can't communicate effectively, you're not fluent -- you merely have a high comprehension level.

On a casual note, anybody who only knows how to read a specific language and claims to be fluent is just fooling themselves. If little elementary school kids can speak and write better than you can, that's just sad.

>> No.16739779

>>16739742
>No, it won't.
Yes it will.

>You don't know how people actually speak until you actually speak with people.
That's regiolect, not "nuance". And you don't have to speak to them. You only have to listen to them. Not an argument in favor of spoken production practice.

>Learning to read and write is considered a primary aspect of modern education.
People in the west learn to write because they're forced to. There's nothing special about writing in particular that is actually part of the language. Writing and writing systems are a technology. Indeed reading itself has learning the technology that is the writing system as a barrier you have to overcome before you can read the language encoded in the writing system.

>People who don't know how to read or write languages that they speak are considered illiterate.
So everyone with dysgraphia is illiterate them. Okay.

>And yes, the definition for illiteracy says "or", not "and."
There is no such actual prescription.

>This is, however, still a debated topic, of course.
Nobody is debating this.

>On an academic note, how can you be considered fluent in a language if you can't properly produce it on your own?
Fluency is not academically defined.

>Fluency is defined as
It's not.

>On a casual note, anybody who only knows how to read a specific language and claims to be fluent is just fooling themselves.

Anyone who can only communicate in basic situations that claims to be fluent knows much, much less of the language than someone who reads a lot.

>If little elementary school kids can speak and write better than you can, that's just sad.
There's nothing sad about that at all. Elementary school kids know an unspeakable amount of their language. Things that are literally indescribable. The movement from "studying" to "learning by speaking" is exactly because you cannot study what nobody can describe, and language is something we can barely describe. But "learning by speaking" is not the only answer that is not "studying", and in fact, ALL the ACTUAL VALID EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE shows that speaking practice, itself, is only useful in terms of making your brain "unlock" the recognition features you have already acquired for use for production.

You should probably be able to brute-force a huge string of elements in your head, but only if you are already familiar with them: numbers, words, concepts.
In that case, you'd be able to memorize a order of kanji by their reading or concept, but not remember them visually.

And you'd forget it as soon as you stopped burning 5 hours a day into this little game of yours.

Don't try it if you don't know Japanese. They're written in Japanese.

>> No.16745124

I started actually writing the kanji I'm learning and doing it in the correct stroke order. It takes me a lot longer to go through muh Anki but my retention is through the roof. I used to suffer from flash card blindness where I'd be unable to recognize Kanji in the wild without encountering them a couple of times and looking them up to form that connection between my Anki brain and my reading brain (if that makes any sense). Since actually writing the kanji this doesn't happen anymore, It bridges whatever connection was missing.

I've filled up somewhere around 20 pages of legal pad in the past week and a half. I recommend you try it out if you haven't.

Just as Ulysses is written for normal anglophones? I cannot imagine that Drakengard is very difficult but that is besides the point. This discussion has been had many times before, but the position that the "it's all Japanese" camp always takes is absurd and denies reality. In the real world language complexity varies wildly from work to work - naturally, native speakers are able to comprehend a wide range of complexity with ease, but the more 'literary' you get, the harder it becomes for even native speakers to comprehend material without taking pains to do so. And that effect is amplified greatly when it comes to language learners who may do all right with basic conversational speech but fall apart when it comes to more complex topics. The input hypothesis is i+1, not i+1000. Reading unnecessarily difficult material at low levels is just going to be detrimental to the learning process as you will be spending more time with dictionary lookups than actually reading, and get discouraged and/or not have fun as a result.

I know it's very fun to say "try learning Japanese first" or some variant of the phrase to people who ask about difficulty, but let's all admit it. Say it with me now. "Difficulty levels exist." It's time for the truth to live and the meme to die.

99+% of the time, J-J dictionaries are better than J-E dictionaries only if the user understands enough japanese to understand the distinction the J-J definition is describing.

If they do not understand enough japanese to understand the nuance in the J-J definition, they do not benefit from using J-J dictionaries except in the 1-% of cases where J-E dictionaries have blatantly incorrect definitions, which, most of the time, you can just figure out with google images or something.

If they understand the nuance in a J-J dictionary, they don't need rikai or flashcards anymore. They just know enough japanese. If they don't understand the nuance in the J-J dictionary, forcing themselves to read J-J definitions instead of J-E ones isn't going to help any more than the ordinary content consumption they're already doing.

Beginners and intermediates using J-J dictionaries are just handicapping themselves and making their reading less compelling and less comprehensible. AJATT is a mistake.

Try it out, I was basically in the same boat as you for a couple years (but with grammar deconstructions instead of example sentences) and when I forced myself to start reading I realized that you don't have to understand how they're talking, just what they're trying to say to eachother. You pick up the "how they're saying it" part automatically.

Yes, almost anything is a better way of learning than calling anki sentences "reading." Japanese is a context heavy language and isolated sentences can teach you very little compared to actual media, you don't have to take part in the autism battle of what manga or VN or whatever you should be reading just read what looks interesting to you. Struggling through something that's actual native content will make your Japanese understanding much much better.

Do you mean like guessing 反応's meaning by guessing that it's pronounced something like は~お and remembering "Oh, there was a word like はんのう used in anime a lot when the subs said something about a response, this is 反応 はんのう 'response'"?

Yes, that's completely fine. In fact the natural way of learning new words is going through several jumps in context, and over time, reducing the number of jumps necessary to remember what something means. Something is "acquired" once there are few enough jumps that it's nearly instant. It's very hard to acquire things from anki, so it's no surprise if you're consciously aware of the context shifts you have to make to recover the information for some words.

ZNT reads like game of thrones, there is one scene after the war in Albion where Henrietta goes off on a Cardinal from the church, he was trying to reprimand her by showing her a list of the dead for what was essentially a pointless war. She said she was tired and she would look at it the next day and she starts talking shit. Henrietta flips and admits the whole war was waged for the sake of revenge, so she could take revenge for her lost lover, and it didn't matter who died. That she was a sinful women, and asked what punishment he would give to her? Would he take her to trial? Should she cut open her own neck in penitence? Blew the fuck up on the Cardinal who lost all his balls and said that only God could judge her actions and he bent the fucking knee.

She did feel sorry afterwards when she learned Saito "died".

Scenes like that never made it into the show.

That's how I learned English - I would be able to read and understand stuff without really knowing the grammar behind it.
Then, when English classes would touch on the subject, I already knew it intuitively - the grammar book just helped with organizing this raw knowledge I had into clear-cut rules.

Getting exposure is always a nice idea, you're not fucking it up.

You misunderstood him. You don't read enough English in the sense that you haven't read enough to understand vocabulary usage in modern texts, not that you have a bad vocabulary and won't understand things.

>何よりも暖かく
Why is 暖かく used at the end of this sentence instead of 暖かい?

What does the ~く-form of い-adjectives mean when it's not modifying a verb or further conjugated with something like て or ない? Is it a shortened/"lazy" form akin to how plain て-form is short for てください?

The -く form of an i-adjective is called the 連用形 or continuative form. It is the equivalent of the form 見, 食べ, 行き, なり, etc. for verbs, which you may have learned is called the "verb stem" or "root" or "masu stem." When the last inflected word in a sentence is in the 連用形 it makes it sound like there is still more information left to say, similar to when it ends in the て-form.

So you're saying if I got seriously into english literature, the magic of passive acquisition by extensive reading would bring my english vocab up to roughly the same 40,000 or so that people usually quote for perfect Japanese reading comprehension? That sounds plausible enough.

Very helpful answer. I googled around a bit on the subject and found that 連用形 and 連用形+て are basically interchangeable. Is this only true for sentence ending words, or can it be used mid sentence as well? Do
>食べて、浴びて、寝るつもり
and
>食べ、浴び、寝るつもり
at large mean the same thing (aside from subtle nuances like "rudeness"/coarseness)? Is the second sentence even grammatically valid?

>> No.16757107

>>16757009
I can't say whether your example sentences are correct-sounding or not, but yes, 連用形 and て-form can be used to link sentences in the same way:
>部屋に戻って、勉強をする
>部屋に戻り、勉強をする
These theoretically mean the same thing. However the 連用形 sounds more stiff and would be more at place in a formal essay than in everyday speech.

Has anyone used the KanjiDamage deck for studying kanji?

>> No.16757957

For most languages it seems that you can easily pick up new words by context which makes the learning process very easy but in Japanese you might be able to figure out a word's meaning from context but you will have no clue how to say it which is something you just have to know. Is that about right? Because it makes learning Japanese a tremendous amount harder than learning any other language.

Then you never figured out any word's meaning, and if you're so unsure about its meaning, then refer to a J-J dictionary.

So I'm a beginner, just know the kana and basic grammar shit. Should I be worried about anything besides Tae Kim and core 2k unless ive already finished them both?

>> No.16758615

>>16758605
When you enter the "advanced" sectionsof tae kim (note that it's still basic grammar) you should start /trying/ to read. Not because you'll be ready to read yet, but because it will reinforce earlier information from tae kim while you still know little enough for it to be easy to lay out in front of you, and it will make it so that you automatically start reading once you're truly able to.

Also make sure that you're using tae kim's grammar guide, not his complete guide.
