Nobody was advocating studying kanji in isolation. Study kanji as in "study the elements of kanji".

Lots of words that have to do with the concept of "cold" contain kanji with the ice radical. Now I don't know about you, but I find it hard to believe anyone is going to easily associate two little "comas" with the concept ice anytime soon. However once you do know that it becomes so much easier to recognize patterns and group kanji.

I've been observing a steady rise of my retention rate despite not having started reading yet and having a constant feed of new Kanji in my vocabulary and I really don't understand why it is getting easier to remember things. I just tried reading "Breaking into Japanese Literature", and it's pretty difficult to understand (even the easiest one) without looking at the vocabulary list/glossary all the time. I thought of reading this before starting reading a manga/VN, and I was wrong.. I hate to say this, but I'm somewhere between N4-N5. Can anon suggest what to do? Should I abandon this book and start reading easy manga/VN?

You can try Read Real Japanese, it is also literature but I think it is at a lower level. Even after finishing 2-3 VNs, it was still painful to read and I gave up on the 2nd story though. If I ever try it again, I'm probably going to type out the stories so I can look things up easier.

"proper" literature pretty much requires N1/2. Or rather, reading proper literature requires a level that should make the entire JLPT piss easy for you.

JLPT is a great indicator for western companies that they can send you to Japan to conduct business (or so they think). In nipland however it is at best an indication to them, when they are reading through your CV, that they won't have to talk to you like a baby when you appear for an interview. However 5 minutes of talking to you will make it more than obvious to them if your Japanese is good enough or not. What I am trying to say is not to get to hung up on the whole JLPT level thing.

My favorite thing about learning Japanese is finding out that hentai dialogue sounds just as retarded in the original language.
