I think to write Inaba off as entirely non-canon would be a mistake, since its clearly meant to be part of the Bougetsushou series of works. It's probably best to not take it too seriously because its a gag manga first and foremost and relies on some gags that don't make any sense (Eirin would never get sick) but it does give some insight into some of the characters and their relationships like Mokou and Kaguya. The goofiness of it is endearing.

Not necessarily. Yukari has been weird lately. The last time she did anything of particular note, it was popping in on Marisa to "have a look at the lunar orb" (she didn't get to). She said she doesn't think Gensokyo changing is bad, too, which is REALLY weird for her to say and justifiably freaked Marisa out. There's also the implication that she was the instigator of the doomsday arc in FS, which was really dangerous considering that the urban legend incident could have made it real.

Or rather, their natures CAN change to an extent. But we have more evidence that humans not believing just results in death. The echo youkai, yamabiko, are almost extinct, many youkai were lost as humanity progressed, Gensokyo had to be closed off and so on.

Hm...

In the fairies manga she shows up once because Reimu fucked up by using her abilities carelessly, and I believe another time to test the fairies and get them living in their current home (they needed to be appropriately weak).

In SSiB she is not really doing anything for the "benefit" of Gensokyo as far as I can tell and is just being selfish (I think she just honestly hates mooncunts, and I don't blame her for that).

In WaHH every time she shows up it seems to be due to one of her random little beneficial plans like with the...I'm blanking on the name at the moment... Ah Zashiki Warashi in the outside world, or she just teases Kasen or seems to want her to be an ally? You could consider her actions always responses to "dangers" here.

In FS she seems to not be doing ANYTHING for the benefit of Gensokyo. Quite the opposite. Also last time she showed up she just told a ghost story.

Kind of. Keep in mind that they're completely cut off from the rest of humanity. Famine is a lot more likely if you don't have anyone to trade with, and natural disasters are much worse if you don't have anywhere to evacuate.

But, yes, humans do not depend on youkai in the same way youkai depend on humans. Humans on the outside get by just fine without youkai.

I'm pretty sure the village tolerates the current situation because the alternative is much worse. It's true that the youkai can't afford to wipe them out, but they could oppress them much harder than they are right now. And you can bet that's exactly what'd happen if Gensokyo's humans got serious about throwing off their yoke.

No, I don't mean you read up until the ending and then stopped. I mean the story isn't called "Silent Sinner in Blue". The story is called Touhou Bougetsushou, and it was published across multiple magazines. SSiB is just the subtitle for the chapters that were published in one magazine. The chapters subtitled "Cage in Lunatic Runagate" take place in between them (as do "Inaba of the Moon & Inaba of the Earth", but it's mostly a gag manga).

In the prologue Reimu encountered one of the Moon's terraforming drones rolling through the Gensokyean wilderness, killing all life it touches and immune to anything she can throw at it. It was also invisible to all youkai because of their impurity. And that was a drone. It's doubtful that even Lady Yog-Sothoth can do much against the sheer amount of bullshittery the Lunarians can crank out. Junko managed because she turned Clownpiece into what is effectively a biological weapon specifically for killing Lunarians, and the reason LoLK got resolved at all is because Eirin gave everybody an elixir that was effectively King Crimson in a bottle to survive the bullshit. Makes me wish ZUN would actually dip a bit into Rinnosuke's past, since it's sort of implied he's existed for a long time and it was only in recent years he took up the Curiousities job after working under Marisa's father.

You'd think a straight up born youkai/human hybrid who seems immune to both physical and spiritual illness and disease with a youkai's lifespan would raise an eyebrow in a society where the lines between human and youkai are painted very clearly.

>It is canon, just not written by ZUN, that's all.
"Official" and "canon" do not mean the same things. SDV is official, but only one story is canon. A lot of content in magazines are official, but not canon. Even things written by ZUN can be not canon if they've been soft-retconned.

The first criteria needed to be considered canon would be a context in which ZUN intends for it to be a piece of the setting. If it isn't content made by ZUN himself, in order to make that judgment it would be more or less necessary for it to be supervised by him with decent scrutiny, even if it is in an official work. Writing would need an even stricter criteria.

The point where things should have been well-supervised by ZUN is where a decent amount of things fail on canonicity. Stuff like Yuugi's alt. outfit would fall out of this, but outfits aren't really important to consider anyways. Inaba fails on the details of the comics, but overall it could be argued that ZUN had at least enough supervision that the overall setting of e.g. the Watatsukis visiting is canon. That's why people are saying it could be considered "semi-canon". Sometimes you have to take things instance-by-instance, works aren't always just "canon" or "not canon".

Where supervision starts lacking is where a lot of discrepancies start coming up; like various details in Aki Eda's art, more generally misc. guest art in official works, stuff that was put in the appendix of EaLND (that actually needed an errata published to fix), and so on. Being able to know what parts of what works had more or less supervision is important in understanding what should or should not be thought of as "canon".

This was a weird tangent for the thread to go on. Death means instant resurrection for Mokou so you'd need to do what the heroines in IN Extra do and kill her so much it incapacitates her. All of the teams back out of actually eating her liver though. You could also do it to Kaguya or Eirin.

If you want to be a powerful human you should study magic or be a hermit.

>>16640643
Spending an eternity with Kaguya probably isn't Mokou's ideal endgame but I think after so long they've mostly mellowed out to each other. Who knows, eventually they'll probably be friends, they're really the only people who can understand each other's plight.

Not only having to tolerate her retarded fucking attire but her flustered attitude as everyone on /jp/ tells her she's STILL GOT IT and DAMN, KOSUZU LOOKS LIKE *THAT*?? because they're not the ones who have to sit there and watch the chimes in her hair produce types of ringing sounds you didn't even know existed before that day. You've been writing nothing but a healthy diet of chronicles and later anonymous mystery books for your ENTIRE REINCARNATION CYCLE coming straight out of the boonies in the Human Village. You've never even seen anything this fucking pathetic before, and now you swear you can taste the sweat that's exploding all around as she bows down to display her embarrassment, smugly assured that you are enjoying the opportunity to get screentime to sit there and revel in her "cute (for that is what she calls herself)" design, the design she worked so hard for with Moe in the previous issues. And then ZUN calls for another page, and you know you could kill every single person in this room before the house guards could put you down, but you sit there and endure, because you're fucking Akyuu. You're not going to lose your future Akyu's Untouched Score CD over this. Just bear it. Hide your face and bear it.

Think that's out of date now, Akyuu should officially be like 22 now, so even less time left now.

Just watch the day Akyuu dies will be the day ZUN officially stops working on Touhou and the series ends.

honestly ZUN putting a timer on the series like that is kinda fucked. Not so much Akyuu but Reimu and Marisa can't really do what they're doing now as cakes

Maybe ZUN is going to write a concrete ending. He seems to be writing more serious stuff and moving big plot points forward like the Moriya ski lift

I'm only assuming 12 years old because everyone treats her like a child. She could have been younger or older at the time.

The true nature of Gensokyo and the Human Village was revealed this chapter. That's pretty huge. Plus, the plots of almost everything he's been doing have been getting so much more serious. Is he setting up for a conclusion?

It was already implied, and also the symbiotic relationship between humans and youkai was already explained, but he had never flat out said "the human village exists to serve youkai, they must coexist or else they both cease to exist" until this chapter. Clever readers already should have known, but it was kind of stunning how bluntly it was said this issue.

Rather deceptive. The human village is only in that situation because the barrier cuts them off from the outside world.

>> No.16657670

>>16657652
Didn't Kasen say Youkai could exist outside the barrier and Gensokyo is Isolated because Yukari wants it to be Isolated

>> No.16657685

>>16657670
I don't know if Kasen said that but, well, they CAN. It is known.

It's much harder to exist. Mamizou is from the outside world and is a youkai. Most youkai died out when technology advanced and fear dissipated, so Gensokyo is "necessary". Yukari was an impetus for isolating it, but many others were in accord, including some humans (such as the shrine maiden of the Hakurei)

Kasen technically was also responsible, I guess, being an old sage.

>> No.16657742

>>16657670
They can exist, but it is much, much harder since knowledge and technology has done so much to explain away so many things that youkai were thought to be responsible for. Yamabiko are extinct. Vampires are the stuff of fairy tales. Moriya Shrine had to move. Things like that.

Yukari wasn't the only sage though, many were involved in the plan, including Kasen.

What is more interesting is Yukari's current movements because shes doing things not consistent wuth simply holding the line. It seems the winds of change are blowing, but for reasons Yukari hasn't made apparent yet. But talking to Kosuzu and Kasen seem to be part of it. Or perhaps she is using extreme examples to show people how delicate Gensokyo is and how dangerous things like Sumireko's powers can be.

Though Kasen is also "opposed" to Yukari. Whatever she said I believe reflects that. She serves and values humans while Yukari, to Kasen, sees Gensokyo as serving youkai. I get the sense Kasen regrets her role and maybe could sooner do without Gensokyo, preferring that things take their natural course.

As for Yukari recently, I think she thinks that a stagnant, comfortable Gensokyo is a bad thing. It needs change and some challenge to survive.

Kasen meddles in things (particularly the activities of Reimu and the sanctity of her Shrine) and keeps rare objects and creatures far too much for me to believe she would rather Gensokyo disappear. I think she just believes she has different methods to preserving it than Yukari and is taking a bit more of an active approach to dictating what Reimu does.
