Today it's /jp/'s birthday! 9 whole years!

I made this to celebrate. I added things from memory so I may have left out something, I can add it if you have any suggestions.

Here's the png version, too large for 4chan: https://my.mixtape.moe/skjisv.png

And here's the psd file in case you want to edit it yourself:
https://my.mixtape.moe/gasvom.psd

Let's celebrate /jp/'s birthday!

I don't like you /jp/. You used to be clever and witty. You used to make OC.

Now most threads on the catalog are just chatrooms and safe spaces for crossboarders. I would rather have Kuroko spam back than seeing this.

/jp/ has fared way better than most all boards, the main problem is not lack of OC it is moderation enforcing oddities. OC still happens, but due to times with actual content drought and times with content we apparently cannot talk about on the jay it has died down. Factor in that you may just not like the new OC, for example I still don't much like or even understand the weird Marisa things. It's way more likely that you and others have changed more over the years than /jp/ has and don't want to admit it, after all we are responsible for what goes on here not the other way around. Though the new moderation and generals don't count, I think.

"slightly healthier than a tumor" is not a good prognosis.
it may still be called /jp/ - otaku culture, but I seriously doubt there's any pre-split poster anymore. Right now the majority of the population was still in middle school when we (or at least I) were posting about that hole in the sukumizu.

The spinoffs died and to be honest futaba is pretty shitty too, but that's no reason to browse a websight where タラコ is the fucking admin.
Imo the whole imageboard paradigm is dead. Just replace it with something new. For me it was streaming on an obscure japanese websight.

Here is some OC I saved today. Not sure how old it is. Not even sure it's actually from /jp/ but I bet it is.
Sure it's not anything amazing, it's some secondary bullshit, probably drawn by a terrible artist, like that faggot who put his ugly as shit fairies in the good wiki. But I thought it was cute, even if it's not an epic tier meme drawn by Dan Kim or something.

Doesn't change the fact that /jp/ should die, because that's clearly the work of a minority.

Because if they put it to an up/down vote the people in the generals outnumber the people who care about /jp/ spirit by a lot. The mods aren't going to kick 1,000 people off the site when they're the ones who "actually discuss things" as opposed to a bunch of people who spend a bunch of time trying to reinvent /b/ (二次元裏, but it's not like they care) and complaining about the mods. It seems very out of /jp/sy character to raid anyway. Even early [s4s] was very /jp/sylike, but this felt a little too forced and alien.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, but I was speaking about /jp/ derivatives feeling forced, much like the ongoing raid

as for /jp/ approved media, that's like anything on 4chan. Boards are kind of like boxes that we seat faceless anons inside to talk to each other, but more often than not the some individuals have scribbled drawings everywhere on the inside, and we call this "board culture", and some perceive them to be overreaching unspoken rules. I think the topic, tone and quality of the conversation inside the box, as defined by the box, is really what contributes to board culture, but we get slipped up on thinking about the whole box as one monolithic collective of these static scribblings, rather than as a place of dynamic discussion

I hope for the future that /jp/ remains Otaku Culture, and does not become a board of generals, or even a Touhou flavoured /e/ or /c/, no matter how much I would enjoy it

My problem is when I think about what could happen next, or when I go to message my friend who has already read or watched it, about something I found funny or a prediction about what will happen next, I feel as though I'm trying hard to fit in. Partially because /jp/ will have discussed whatever it is a thousand times already and praised or critisised each part, I feel like my opinions on certain parts will never be original and that I'm just parroting what someone else said before me, whether I have read their views on it or not. Partially because I'm consuming the media so long after everyone else, I feel as though another /jp/sie looking at what I'm doing would consider my actions tokenism and that I'm just doing it to fit in, rather than doing it because I want to. I sound very insecure; I guess I have alot of respect for /jp/ users.

Nearly the entire web is collapsing, that is right. But the web is only one part of the internet. Remember that MUDs, IRC, usenet, telnet BBS, and more exist. They're parts of the internet that aren't part of the web. Most of those places are in quantity decline, but their quality decline is either nonexistent or much slower than that of the web. So always remember, that if you want some sort of new paradigm that isn't an imageboard or textboard refresh, you can try bringing your modern culture to a part of the old internet. Of course, if you use someone else's server, you should lurk. But you can always make your own servers, channels, newsgroups, and the like.
I'm thinking of making an imageboard newsgroup. Not sure whether it would be talk.imageboard.*, soc.imageboard.*, or an alt.* one. Probably alt.* since I can't imagine talking to the cabal about imageboard newsgroups. Usenet has a pretty good system for categorisation: stuff like talk.imageboard.4chan can exist alongside stuff like talk.imageboard.futaba, talk.imageboard.misc, and other things. The big difference though, is that usenet is pseudonymous rather than anonymous. It'd essentially be like everyone having a name, albeit not having a trip. Everyone could potentially use the same name though, leading to a more anonymous environment.
Some parts of the web are incredibly difficult to use now, actually. Gikopoi comes to mind: it uses proprietary Adobe technology. Tenhou suffers the same problem.

This is a discussion board, not a shitposting board. There are places like /s4s/ if you need to spam pointless stuff.
2hu posts can't really be helped. /vg/ stole too many topics, so there's nothing else to post.
Generals can't be avoided either. It's a combination of "condense your threads" and the fact that people would spam so much that having a single thread was the only way you could discuss anything. A third problem is this is a board for intended niche things without boards. It's not even the generals that are the problem, it's the way /v/, /vg/, and /a/ act, and the inability to let go of their club house when there's no important discussion to be had.

In you guys opinion, is there a way I could make a "why is anime so shit" thread and have it be about the anime fans and otaku side of it rather than being an /a/ topic? I really don't get why people like shit like kemono friends and that dragon maid lesbian trash. I wonder if otaku are more accepting of low quality nowadays because there's nothing else or if the market veered towards that.

I wonder what happened to sci fi and fantasy nerdy otaku to make them get replaced by pervy otaku who only care about cute things and tits.

>None of you are going to want to talk about kigurumi outfits, idols, dolls, vocaloids, or specific light novels outside of their threads. Nothing it preventing you from making a thread about a /jp/-related material right now.
Most of the discussion I've had of idols has been outside actual idol general threads. There are a few light novels I would discuss if people wanted to talk about it. I can't post in Vocaloid general because I'm an amateur of Vocaloid. Making my own thread for these would be depressing because - in all likelihood - they'd promptly be buried under general threads. Yes, I could suck it up and do it, but browsing an imageboard should be something people do as their whims dictate, not like some sort of chore they do in the dim hope of a possible reward.

Loosely speaking: in order to sustain independent threads for something, there need to be enough bored people with common interests idling on the front page to see it and jump on it. /jp/, for reasons having to do with generals and other reasons both, doesn't have this pool of free users anymore. There's all sorts of pressure on the board to be a certain way and meta is one of the only things I can imagine being capable of actually resisting it - doing things the "correct way", just making threads for things you like and hoping that will regenerate the pool of users through nothing but genuine interest in stuff is a losing fight and more importantly it's one that has already ground me to dust.

Light otaku are more likely to consume media which doesn't have a complex storyline. I enjoy series which has a more complex storyline nowadays because its rarer. I still think there is merit to loosely storylined series though, I just dont really know how to put it into words. Maybe what I mean is that the story doesnt matter but the values or ideas that it expresses by just existing are enough, like Chobits.

You have to disguise it it as a /jp/ thread.

For example, you could ask why Kemono Friends has managed to roll over Nicovideo and Japanese Twitter like a large memetic wrecking ball, or what it is about fill-in-the-blank thousand-girl series that causes modern otaku in particular to flock to them (see also: Touhou, Kantai Collection).

I've never said that we should break up or ban the generals - they're passable at what they do, and if people want to collect in a thread to discuss a thing they like there's no compelling reason that they shouldn't be allowed to do so. I've mostly been the one asking for a separate board in this thread. Though while I'm at it I suppose I might as well be asking for adminship or a million dollars.

AKB General in particular is an example where breaking it up would be a complete disaster because the people who post in AKB General don't culturally mesh with a lot of the rest of /jp/.

If I'm the only one here who feels that there are great pressures acting to make it difficult to make successful non-general non-template threads in /jp/ but wants to see them anyway then it would just all be about me. I just don't think I am.

But what is it they would make threads about? I mean you already said it's okay to make generals. What is there to be had outside of them? Any topic popular enough to have threads about more than once in a blue moon is basically a general and anything less probably barely has enough people to bump it off page 10 every couple of days. There's very little active content to talk about, as in something that would become popular, discussed, and then disappear. Lots of stuff is in Japanese and lots of /jp/ seems to want to refuse to learn it. A lot of it is already being talked about in /vg/ too.

"Stop liking what I don't like" threads are sometimes nice when OP's not being a complete shitter and nobody is outright trolling, because they give people a place to talk about things they don't like. If nobody makes a thread declaring that X is shit you'll never have an opportunity to explain to people - including bystanders - why X is great and you should like X too. Nobody likes a circlejerk.

>>16609670
>But what is it they would make threads about?
Anything Japanese that's not an anime or manga? It's not like there's nothing to talk about. Just because there is a general thread for a topic doesn't mean you can't make a thread about some specific aspect of that topic, either. There is a lot of difference between threads that are up all the time and threads that are up once every six months.

>Lots of stuff is in Japanese and lots of /jp/ seems to want to refuse to learn it.
/jp/ has basically bullied itself into not admitting that it's currently in the process of learning Japanese. It's not something you can talk about anymore, both because of the ingrained culture of /jp/, and because the janitor seems to be deleting any discussion of how knowing / not-knowing Japanese might affect your enjoyment of a thing.

It wasn't always like this.

>Every thread that isn't Touhou-related gets responses like "go back to your containment thread" or "not Otaku Culture".
There's cases where this has led to generals. People getting pissy because they see a topic they don't like even though it fits on /jp/, then the people either a) make a general to contain it so they can discuss the topic tantrum-free, or b) moved to another board they fit less on but are tolerated on.

Result is both generals on /jp/ and lack of content for /jp/ because the people who want to talk about stuff moved to other boards.

I didn't make the rules. In fact I thought our rules were a crock of shit. But it says "diverse niche Japanese interests" with an explicit inclusion of tea right there in the rules, and the threads have been around for years. But even if you got rid of the random Japanese threads it's not like there is a shortage of actual media.

The one thing that never changed across the ages and iterations of jaypee, including the spin offs, is pointless meta threads like this.

9 years of repeating the same in the meta threads: the guy that misses some kind of spam or brand or shitposting, the autistic pretentious asshats that after 9 years can never get what the hell /jp/ -"otaku culture"-not-to-be confused-with-"japan general"-but-for-some-reason-tea-is-okay even is, the weeb that feels above everyone else because he migrated to the jap web but for some reason always shows up on the meta thread, the guy that wants to make yet another spin off board/site to show the man how it's done, the same guys chanting the death of imageboard culture while theorizing what the hell it is, a shitposter with his own brand of old school memes, the depressive that thinks that every one killed themselves except him and finally every one posts touhou.

I happen to be an expert on this topic.
Maidragon is shit because kyoani is shit, but it's the animey the doujinshi artist crowd decided to stealth market. Just like that shitty blue haired maid from rezoro last season, another craptastic animey (but what did you expect from an animey including time leap). And because it has massive support from those yellow monkey it's popular.
Now as to why it's shit, well Kyoani's staff is well known to turn anything into shit, the sakuga being their only saving grace.

As for kemono friends, there isn't any good anime this season except for gabriel dropout, so around third episode people came to discuss it on 2ch, so a few otaku genuinely got interested in it.
The fact that it has so little content for a 30 min anime, the first episode being rushed and unfinished, and the fact that a KIDS anime airs at latenight anime time is what got most real otaku's interest, like wtf is this.

They don't seem to have that much in common, but they do. Why you ask? because of ファッションオタク fashion otaku. Not otaku of fancy clothes, but people who put on otaku airs for the sake of fashion ie. "look at ME I'm soooo otaku xD". They have those in japan as well.

Why they latched on kemono friends is obvious: it all begun when niconico did a 一挙放送. And niconico being FILLED with shitty fashion otaku (truotaku go to some obscure site, or don't stream at fucking all, all the old streamers died anyway) Also none of them watched more than one episode. If you ask them or talk kemonofriend with them it's obvious. They basically just say "hurr you're [x] friend xDDD" and repost memepictures on twitter so they can be a part of the gang.

As for maidragon, it's popular so they latch onto it, just like with flies and shit.

Unfortunately such post belong in /a/ where they will be ignored because everybody is too busy talking about narto.

/jp/ sucks because the moderation deletes good threads on the basis that it doest belongs here/it belongs elsewhere.
If it's an anime it's /a/, if it's a light novel it's /a/ because there's an anime adaptation, if it's a seiyuu discussion it's /a/ if it's a doujinshi it's /a/ or /h/ if it's a doujin game it's /v/ or /h/ if it's a game it's /v/ if it's a novel game it goes on /v/ or /lit/ if it's doujin music it's /mu/ , figures go on /a/, nobody buys dolls and we're left with kigurumi and idols.

I can't talk about http://akiba-pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/news/1045513.html because
1) it's in jap and nobody speaks it
2) it's a game so it goes in /v/
3) it involves 野水伊織 so it goes in /a/

I know ソシャゲ probably should go on /v/ or /a/ but have some umapyoi anyway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uxe79gNWTmA the only good thing that ever came from cygames.

/jp/ is a board to discuss otaku culture
/jp/ is a comunity ◎
