Interested myself because I don't hear the latter; although dictionaries seem to give similar definitions, looking at various examples of use cases, it's an issue of transitivity as the verbs suggest. 手に入れる is the actual transitive "to actively obtain/acquire" meaning you're probably already thinking about, while 手に入る is intransitive and more about something (perhaps unintentionally) coming into your possession. It also seems to be used for something becoming "available" or "obtainable".

Are you going to keep doing the Yotsuba deck forever? 1200 cards just to have an easy time reading one volume of manga is a high cost, and the cards are low-quality/overspecific in comparison to both Core or a mining deck so I don't think it's a good choice in the long run. You can continue adding cards to core and smash good or easy if you want, it would take what, a few minutes every day to do it? It's still exposure. On the other hand you have to handle your mining deck seriously, that is pressing again whenever you're wrong.

Most manga with furigana, especially ecchi ones, would be as easy as Yotsubato, all while most likely be more compelling. I mostly learned Japanese through manga and yet I've never read Yotsubato. Don't force yourself to read it because /a/ made a meme out of it.

Use last name + san, unless you know it's appropriate to do otherwise. If a boss is talking to his subordinates (or a teacher to student) he might use last name + chan/kun. If you are talking to friends you might use first name (with chan/kun/san/nothing depending on your relationship). For someone you just met, the safest thing is to use last name + san. This is the grid for all of my decks, which includes my mining deck too. Other decks are core10k (unfinished), N5 and N4 full vocab decks, kanji deck. Wasn't necessarily relevant, I just posted it without second thought.

Just so you know your reaction right now is typical, everyone went through this phase, just keep reading and it'll get better before you realize it. Do it every day at a consistent pace; I started with 1 chapter a day and before long I was able to read multiple volumes during the day.

Make a schedule and/or keep notes on how much you read every day, so then you can keep track on how you're doing and in the future notice your progress.

>I say this, as Japanese people scarcely develop meaningful connections with others. They’re busy– always busy– without time to speak with others outside of highly organised and artificial drinking ‘parties’. The only time you can actually meet with someone here is if you happen to be a part of the same club, class or event. And even if you both happen to coincidentally be free one day for lunch, you will have to carefully schedule it days or even a week in advance. Nothing happens naturally, and nothing develops beyond this shallow game of pretend. Everyone is your acquaintance, and nobody is your friend.

>I try so much with the people here, desperate to make living on the other side of the planet even slightly less suffocating, that I have no time or energy to deal with my actual coursework. I just can’t give a damn. I’ve always learnt Japanese through reading books and speaking to Japanese people, and get little to nothing from classes (most of which is wasted by the loud American exchangers who incessantly yell and interrupt the teacher). And hence I’m failing, despite most of the lectures containing content I already learned months or years past. Heck, I don’t even know if these courses will count for credit in my home university to begin with.

I tried to read a volume of Index back in like 2010 and struggled through like 40 pages hating most of it and being really confused. Was taking classes and such in Japan at the time. After a while I saw Haganai being advertised in a shop (this was a few months before it got animated) and picked that up, and I found it much easier to understand. Got through that while having a lot of fun.

It only got smoother from there, after a while you learn to basically pick up from clues and such. Occasionally there'll be some specific word I don't know, but after dozens of books and a bunch of video games it's often something the intended audience isn't really expected to know either, and will usually have a little explanation.

Really depends on who you talk to. Someone who reads a lot might be able to pass pre-level 1, but there are a lot of Japanese people who couldn't pass that, even in high school and beyond. 漢検 is something you really need to study specifically for, as a lot of what you see on there is about historical origin, old associations in meaning, etc.

Anyway the point is that 漢検 and JLPT are almost entirely incomparable. JLPT is intended for foreigners and is far, far easier than 漢検1, which has something like a 15% pass rate last I checked (despite being taken mostly by native japanese).

Hmmm.

お + masu form can be used as a command (お行き for "go!", etc). It's from the honorific form お+v+なさい.

http://www.ysn21.jp/furusato/yomoyama/text31.html

Here's an explanation on yamaguchi-ben that talks about it in reference to standard japanese (first result I found and I don't feel like searching any further).

これに似た現象は標準語などにも見られ、それは上記の説の論拠でもあります。たとえば、「お行きなさい」の「なさい」が省略されて「お行き」、「行きなさい」の「さい」が省略されて「行きな」となり命令の意を表します。

I'm back, I'm >>16447355 and I just finished the test. I got 156/230 as shown pic related (it being red means "I failed" I guess). If you're wondering what the thing at the bottom is about, it's about the score that's written on the .pdf they send you;
>日本語力の総合スコア : 69
>漢字力の総合スコア : 64

Considering this was my first time doing this particular test I was a bit anxious and messed up answering a few questions I would normally have answered right (clicked wrong, etc). I was also very surprised at the listening parts (the 2nd and especially the 3rd one), they were pretty tough (audios were shit on purpose and they would speak in a very fast way). You only have 4 secs to answer most questions in the test, too. The reading/grammar parts last 10 minutes total for 30-50 questions so you have to manage your time yourself. (I'm of course not trying to find any excuses, I did my best and got the score I deserved.)

是非 do it as well anons, it's a pretty good one I think, in a different way than the J-CAT is. I believe the test lasted a little less than an hour, so have an hour ready for it if possible.

Do I really have to super proficient at hiragana and katakana to move on?

I just started learning about 2 weeks ago. As of now, I can recognize all hiragana (under 1 sec), and most of katakana (slower, about 2-3 secs). I'm wondering if I need to make sure I can instant recognize both before moving to basic grammar and kanji.

I've been using Genki (might switch to Minna no Nihongo tho), and there are both hiragana/katakana or romaji.

>> No.16451423

>>16451403
No, kana should take you about a day. The greater recognition and reading speed come with time, nobody reads a word one letter at a time, they read whole words. The faster you start looking at real text with real words in kana, the better and faster your understanding will grow.

Genki is trash, it's far too slow. Grammar works on the same principle as kana, you breeze through it, then start actually reading to put it into practice. Try Japanese the manga way or Tae Kim.

If I just share it and don't ever get any feedback I'd feel a bit sad because I don't think I can bring this project of me close to perfection just by myself. I'm not sure how to go about set up something like this though.

Other reason is because I always envisioned me sharing those when it'd be complete (to the latest released volume or chapter that is) as I would not want people to have to wait for me to finish transcribing to continue reading, it would defeat the purpose of this project, which is to make reading and mining from this manga an easy and agreeable experience.

I was going to read it when you're done. I'll let you know if I find anything. I'll also give you feedback.

I'd also not wait until it's all complete. People put out things as they finish all the time, including manga chapters. If you put too much stress on yourself you'll find it hard to keep going. I speak from experience.

The only thing I omit from the manga are when characters are putting emphasis on words, like that :
>ごはんにする? お風呂にする? それともわ・た・し・?
The 「わ・た・し・」 part just looks confusing with the dots that way (since it's obviously horizontal writing and not vertical), and since I couldn't think of anything I decided to omit them. Anyway it's meant to be read with the manga open so the person can simply notice the emphasis when looking at the page, I don't believe they're needed on the transcript.

>Although I was allowed to use a dictionary, because of the time constraint there were parts I couldn't answer like I thought, and I felt depressed about my lack of English proficiency.

思ったように答えられない = "couldn't answer like I thought" (as opposed to "like I thought, I couldn't answer"). So the ない negates the whole thing.
