It's really nothing alike because the Touhou fans are making the decision to not play the games when they could get them for cheap or even pirate them for free. iM@S not only cannot be pirated, but someone would have to buy a whole new console just to play the game if they bought it. All because modern consoles fuck everything up with internet connectivity and NBGI never wants to release any Japanese successes in English because they hate us.

They decided after poor (read: nonexistent) marketing for Tales of Destiny and Tales of Eternia that the series could never sell outside Japan, despite the fact barely anyone even knew the games existed. Then Nintendo needs an RPG and does all the legwork for Symphonia, it sells great because Nintendo marketed the shit out of it, so Namco decides to release new games, but only if they're 3-D, because we all know Americans haet 2-D.

Katamari-Damashii only came out after tons of people played the Japanese version, including professional reviewers, and they all begged Namco to bring it out. Even then they brought it out at an extremely low price because they didn't have any faith it would sell for full.

iDOLM@STER is pretty much the entire reason the X360 is still afloat in Japan, where the consumers have a strong aversion to foreign products and don't really like shootan. Yet despite its popularity NBGI assumes a game about such a Japanese thing like idols could never sell abroad.

Of course even if we did get it they would probably do something like they did with Taiko no Tatsujin and replace all the Japanese voices and songs people interested in the game here would enjoy and replace them with cheap covers of popular American music. Obviously people who are interested in anime idol singers, much like those who like the taiko, can't possibly stand Japanese music.

Basically if it isn't Soul Calibur, Tekken, or Pac-Man, it isn't coming out in English. But they're not going to let it you import it either; that would ruin potential future sales on all those games they never plan on localizing!

I have both games, iM@S and L4U, and honestly, you aren't missing much.

The first game is a 53-day (week) VN which involves tedious minigames such as "spot the incorrect word in a sentence", "simon says", "pacman where you hunt the ghosts" and "barely existent Taiko game". The VN aspect is anal and perfect communications almost always require a guide, and auditions are pretty fun albeit weird and difficult to explain past "rhythmic appealing and category juggling" that gain you fans and an overall higher producer rank.

Basically, think Persona 3 without the dungeon.

The second game has retardedly anal timing, to the point where it's even harder to get perfects than it is to get them in IIDX. There's no speed modifiers, there isn't a large variety of songs, and all they've been releasing is remixes and a couple of real songs, which are $15 dollars each, DLC. The worst thing about the DLC in L4U is that it's not only expensive as fuck, but also useless! In the first game, DLC was useful. DLC in the first game gave you costumes which added to either your visual, vocal or dance. Since there's none of that in the second game, YOU'RE BASICALLY BUYING A COSTUME TO LOOK AT. Although I can see the appeal since some of them are really well done.

However, buying a Japanese 360 is totally worth it because apart from it giving you access to these games, Raiden Fighters Aces, Raiden IV, Otomedius G, Death Smiles, Ketsui, Dodonpachi Daioujou, Tetris Grandmaster Ace, and a bunch of other upcoming titles are being released for it. Hell, some of them are already released for the console.

I like iM@S, but can see why it wouldn't do well in the US. Who wants to do a minigame 100 times *perfectly* for an achievement, or reset after failing to greet your idol correctly in the morning with random answers? It's not going to work.

The US ones usually don't bother, but the majority of JP 360 games are region locked. I suspect it's not quite so optional over there, as there has to be some benefit to region-locking games like Idolm@ster and DDP:DOJBLX that will never get an international release.

Personally, I think I prefer cosmetic DLC to "useful" DLC. I can't stand "buy your way to victory" games, like just about all Asian MMOs and an increasing number of Western ones.

Namco seems to hate the idea of earning money with good games. Same happened with their Skycrawlers game: Developped by Team Aces, looking gorgeous, having anime sequences by Production I.G. and receiving 32/40 from Famitsu yet shipping 12,000 in the first week and of course NO PLANS FOR RELEASE OUTSIDE OF JAPAN WHERE ACE COMBAT HAS ALWAYS SOLD VERY GOOD.
