Some general advice based on my experience:
- Don't be dead set on translating word by word, don't try to find the exact word that has the same nuance in English. Capture the gist of the sentence and reword it in a way to convey a similar meaning. Don't stray too much either.
- Have a few dictionaries at hand, online ones will do too.
- Don't get stuck with a difficult part. Mark it and ask other people for ideas.

I've also seen translations where people make shit up when they don't understand. If you don't care about quality, you could do it too. The grand majority who watch/read the subs don't understand Japanese so they will have to believe you anyway. I would recommend against it, though.

Unless you are planning to be a one-man army, you should let other people to take care of things such as encoding or timing so you can concentrate on translating.

And it is always recommended to have your script proofread.

Honestly speaking, it is probably easier to translate h!p shows than most other japanese shows (such as animu or dramas). The japanese that the h!p members use is quite basic, none of them use a particularly large vocabulary. The only thing you really need to know besides stuff that you would learn in your first few years of japanese class, is slang that the youth use nowadays, and some different dialects (especially kansai-ben).
