Funny, I thought the same thing, he's just a giant douche for no reason. He's poorly designed though, you can clearly see how the developers are practically begging you to think of him as "mysterious" and interesting because of his past, but since there is pretty much zero inner monologue and he tells you zero about his emotions the whole "I am this way because this is what the world made me" shit just doesn't work.
There are many authors that can put together a novel or a movie with an asshole as a character that you can still emphasize with, but that would require real depth of character and character developement.
It's obvious this isn't Shakespeare, so I really don't understand why they didn't go with an obvious, LIKABLE protagonist, instead of this annoying douchebag.
Here are just some of the highlights that pissed me off about him:
"Oh look, there's a little dog in the rain, it's barely alive but apparently in pain and dying. Well, let's go grocery shopping"
"the person who is dearest to you just died, but you know, if you kill yourself you can go see her right now!"

Actually, since I went with the Risa route first I didn't slap her at all, but it makes little difference. If you choose to not slap her, he thinks something along the lines of
"I stopped myself from hitting her, because that wouldn't solve anything. Someone once taught me that slapping women across the face is futile unless you leave a permanent mark."
Which is perfectly in line with the point I was trying to make, the character is a gigantic ass for no reason no matter how you look at it. Even if you left out the point of him slapping her, it doesn't change the fact that he's horribly unfit to be the protagonist of such a game.

There's no need for an "optimal" protagonist in such a game, I highly doubt anyone is going to play it because of the story. All I'm saying is that I would have rather had a protagonist that doesn't get in the way of my enjoyment of the game.

Wanko needs a hardass character because most the females are soft, weak and prone to fantasy. A weak indulgent male who gladhands around would've come off as too eager to help/conform and would've been clingy.
Mikan: Hung up on her dead master. If not grounded in reality she would die in an alley chasing the impossible. Without a firm hand to direct her and give her harsh perspective she would have gone out of control.
Risa: Teenager with a lack of ambition and talent, she was overshadowed by her sister and uncomfortable at home. So she practically runs away and becomes a stray herself. Yuuichi takes her in, puts her in a place of reasonable expectation, and accepts her faults and perversions with minimal fuss.
Nadeshiko: Middle-aged woman who has substituted love and family life with pets of all kinds. She's so hung up on being lonely and the ideals of love and companionship that she isolates herself. Yuuichi steps in and shatters those romantic illusions (and comes off as a huge asshole with his 'false love') and winds her down (literally with massage at some points), which permits her to act more freely, and she's able to settle down and socialize better.

Those are all good points and they might very well be true. Had the game actually cared to make Yuuichi elaborate on his thoughts and feelings about those points even just a little, I wouldn't be complaining. As it stands right now though, I felt that he was pretty much moving through the game without any ulterior motives and the only reason he even went out of his way to do anything for anyone was that it would have been more bothersome for him if he didn't do it.
