F/S is pretty pointless. All it tells me in general is when I'm starting to get tired. After that I begin focusing less on timing and instead grinding hard songs

Play by what feels comfortable to read. Ignore f/s and don't adjust offset. Give yourself time. If you have laggy monitor change to HD*
You won't find out what suits you for awhile. Long-term consistency is the only reliable fact to go with. All of the immediate results such as ex, f/s, etc are pointless. Changing settings to meet these results will do more harm than good since you constantly need to readjust

Don't know exactly how much it shifts, but if you're already at -2 HD* will definitely help you getting closer to 0
I forgot to add if you're playing well rested then stick to fixed GN and ignore f/s. Otherwise if your sessions are long (3+ hours) and you consistently begin to get more slows then lower (increase) GN, but stick with same WN
Why I recommend this is due to fact both wn and gn won't matter a whole lot during long sessions because eventually fatigue hits and no matter what you do you won't be your best. Sticking to wn is merely for convenience when you come back the next day
Save your nerves and set whatever settings to feel comfortable in a fatigued state. Except offset

More than -1 is seriously unnecessary for most TVs and monitors. I believe 0.1 is single frame of delay. There's no way in hell any kind of monitor or TV will lag by ~160ms (-1)
Instead of playing with offset try windowed or fullscreen mode or other adjustment to ensure you're not running running into technical issues
Generally for most relatively budget monitors you may feel the need to adjust offset by -0.2-0.3. Played on many TVs and monitors. Never had to adjust beyond 0.5. Even on a 10 year old plasma TV
Offset by itself isn't the devil. It's a great addition, but I've seen people adjusting offset, getting used to it and slows return. Then they increase offset even more and so on. Now that's the devilish part. It was never about lag or anything like it, but poor hand control (being lazy, not "trying" to time and merely slapping the keys as late and lazily as possible whilst constantly adjusting offset)
There's a reason why musical instrument teachers point out everything from your posture to hand control. We have an inherent tendency to use as little energy as possible to meet the means. Focusing on how you play is as important as focusing on what's happening in the game. Both need conscious effort and awareness. Otherwise all you get is little progress out of the time you've put in and very bad habits
Check this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J95GSEVDRXI and remember 1048's face forever. This is the kind of face you want to have while playing

Correct. 0.0 HD* = -1.0 HD = -2.0 SD = -4.0ish CS (DistorteD~Empress PS2).

>>16293770
>I believe 0.1 is single frame of delay.
Incorrect.

1.0 is a frame. If you're noticing changes at increments of 0.1 (1.7ms), it's more than likely placebo, unless you're very good and get 99% on everything you play. I personally don't really notice until around 0.3 increments.

Thanks for the correction, but HD is -2.0? How come I get more slows with HD than HD*?

Though I don't get the point of offset then. At max it's still like only 1/3 of many monitors/TVs latency. To put it simply, it doesn't do jack shit in terms of helping to adjust. May as well play with 0, get used to it and compensate
My experiences are what I stated though. Taking monitor with the most latency at 0 I get ~+20 slows (relative). At 0.3 it's +-2-5
Either some of those very old and very cheap monitors are actually really good or I'm capable of adjusting by ~20-60ms
Perhaps this isn't too surprising. At some point I guess it just doesn't matter much anymore. Simply adjusting within few rounds without noticing. As you can see the variance is relatively small despite playing on terrible monitor. I can still AAA stuff and switch between them, but losing ~20-50ex

How many other games are there out there where you can break a sweat while standing still and playing it? Anything similar to IIDX would be about it, I guess. But this is what still makes it stand out to me. >How come I get more slows with HD than HD*?
Because HD* 0.0 is equivalent to HD -1.0. That's how the offset works.

>Though I don't get the point of offset then. At max it's still like only 1/3 of many monitors/TVs latency.
The offset is meant to be used on arcade cabinets with somewhat standardized monitors, not everybody's illegal home setup. Even so, HD* has a -4.0ish offset built in. Another -5.0 on top of that and you're offsetting at least 9 frames of visual latency.

>Taking monitor with the most latency at 0 I get ~+20 slows (relative). At 0.3 it's +-2-5
I hope you mean -0.3, since otherwise you're offsetting in the wrong direction to deal with slows, which would be further evidence of it being placebo. Also, a 0.3 increment is a significant enough change to be noticeable to a consistent player.

Even if the network is offline that doesn't meant they can't track running machines and go after those owners for Konami reasons
It's probably all about cost efficiency for both the arcade owners and Konami. Want to get into conspiracy theories then maybe it's part of a scheme to make players feel pressured and less likely to leave. They keep on going to get maximum out of it
If you'd have to drive for an hour to the arcade would you be there for an hour and drive back or make the most of it?
It's dumb and weird, but if I'd be an owner then I wouldn't keep the machines running 24/7 when there's two or three people there. I'd maybe do exceptions during weekends, summer or some holidays

Konami doesn't give a shit. It's pita to manage international network (business and infrastructure). They're not going to bother since in many countries there's no arcade scene to begin with. They won't open R1 in the hopes of it catching on when there are no signs. How would you go about showing it? Sending Konami secretly pictures of multiple home setups and wishes for them to open legit R1?
Konami literally doesn't give two fucks about the west in general. Their attitude towards outsiders is frustrating and offensive to say the least
The shit they've gotten outside of arcade scene seems to have left a sour taste in their mouth. You don't generally see someone being as disrespectful towards Konami in Japan as does the west and if you're japanese you know well enough how it feels
Despite all the crap they've managed to do it still carries a kind of cultural thing. Internationally well known, established, successful Japanese company. There it's more respected despite the failures
Western FOS often gets carried away. You can do that in Japan, but it isn't taken as someone speaking their mind and being strong. It's disrespectful especially if it's coming from someone with a "low" status

My friend would constantly bitch to me about how it was cheating to change the input delay. It pissed me off at the time. Why is Taiko no Tatsujin so forbidden to get into?

Everything surrounding it is a nightmare. There's a slew of semi-janky simulators that have a very scarce selection of song files to play.

And if you get all that working and are fine with the song selection you have no way to play with a "real" controller. There are no ASC even though they seem like they'd be piss easy to make. You have to make due with a shitty Bluetooth Wii controller or the slightly less shitty, extremely expensive, still Bluetooth Hori controller.

You could play the various Wii versions, even paying for them, but then you're look at a hundred or so songs and using those damn controllers.

And I don't oven dare mention Osu! Taiko mode.

It's possible that toggling stuff causes the controller to quickly disconnect and reconnect. If the controller comes unplugged then the game is going to stop working since if you were in an actual arcade you wouldn't want people putting money in just to find out the buttons don't do anything.

I'm pretty sure the difficulty roof has been raised in general. Super early DDR didn't really have so much that compares to some stuff that's around now in terms of difficulty. I played some SuperNova 2 stuff on PS2 back in the day, and recently I tried some X and X2 songs via Stepmania. 9's and 10's in SN2 are, at best, equal to 12's and 13's I would say, from what I remember at least. There's more in terms of dynamic difficulties as well, I noticed. SN2 seemed somewhat straightforward, but X/2 seemed to like to throw harder patterns to hit like jacks and crossovers a lot more.

Granted I've only played both of them a little bit, so I could be wrong, but that was my general feeling overall. I believe X/2 is older than the 20XX series too, isn't it? So my guess could be inaccurate by now, as well.

Anyway, I have a similar question as this anon has. Since I've only played X/2 stuff I was wondering where a good place to start on a 20XX DDR machine would be for difficulty, as I've found a place with some machines nearby and may try to visit it in the future. As I said I wouldn't know if things have changed since X/2 and that's my only point of reference currently.

Average difficulty of a song I might try to play might go something like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_MYcfhVJrws

Teach me how to play one handed for scratch songs. The best position I found was

I don't think it's appropriate to measure the games that have frame based timing by +- milliseconds.

IIDX is at most 2 frames for a PGreat meaning it's around 33ms so +- 16.67. DDR stopped having frame based timing so that's fine, it might be stricter on paper but it won't feel like it since the arrows actually go to the music.

Although for Pop'n it looks like the answer to my question was 3 frames. At 50ms that's exactly 16.67 x 3.

Also, surprised SDVX is still that tight. It just feels so forgiving compared to IIDX but it's only ~50% bigger.

It's wrong. Bemani timing windows are based on frames. It has been known forever than IIDX is 2 frames (33.33ms), allowing for PG to be counted for being one frame early, which is why it's better to have your timing offset to be a little earlier than a little later.

>>16324570
>DDR stopped having frame based timing so that's fine
It thought they just fixed up the buggy windows. I don't recall DDR ever using a different timing system, but at the same time it wouldn't be too shocking since MFCs have been rolling in like a flash flood since A's release.

>surprised SDVX is still that tight. It just feels so forgiving compared to IIDX but it's only ~50% bigger
Pretty sure it's larger than 50% considering that pop'n has laxer timing windows than IIDX. SDVX feels like it's missing a whole timing window judgment.

Which buggy windows are you referring to. I haven't played enough DDR A to tell, but people have been saying that the "magic" BPMs that apply to the frame-based systems are no longer present in DDR A, suggesting a more StepMania/ITG style timing window. I wouldn't be surprised if they just changed the granularity of the timing windows, though. Say, from 1/60 seconds to 1/240 or something, because who knows what the shitty I/O boards are actually capable of. The Marvelous window might also just be bigger than 2 frames now.
