ITT: Post your theories and interpretation of the games, lore, and universe of Touhou Project.

Yukari operates most effectively when asleep using "dream logic", explaining her odd mannerisms. Her power over boundaries began with a keen lucid dreaming ability. As Maribel Hearn, she was able to switch between lucid dreams and reality at will, falling into REM sleep instantly crossing the boundary of real and dream. From there, her power over this underlying boundary of real and dream was refined into near-omnipotence, much like one would expect to have in a lucid dream. Her own lucid dreaming ability breaches the boundary into the real world, effectively making her an uber-Goddess both in dreams and real.

Gensokyo's demographics and social structures were in fact carefully planned by Yukari. Perhaps she's a lesbian or man-hating feminist shaping an all-female society in her image. Males do exist, but they're mostly bumbling idiots doing muggle things in the human village. Yukari keeps impotent men around in their little zoo to provide the youkai with food and faith, in addition to gapping in random dudes lost innawoods. There are exceptions, however - for instance, offscreen male Kappa and Tengu on Youkai Mountain.

There's no afterlife for the outside world due to lack of faith, only for Gensokyo and similar realms. IMO it would be incredibly weird for the billions of Christians and Muslims in the world outside Japan to be told the right religion was actually Shinto with sides of Taoism and Buddhism.

What you see during gameplay is actually an inaccurate representation. Girls are actually barraging each other with spread fire danmaku in both directions. I believe PoFV portrayed it best, you're not a laser eating away at a bullet sponge, but a fellow shooter gradually wearing down the other through time and probability. The P and Score Icons aren't really there, but more of a visual metaphor for the area's ambient mana.

PC98 is actually a distant future
Alice in touhou 7 is a human, she then gets possesed by the grimoire making her child and reseting the universe
PC98 happens backwards
Shinki is the first boss, she destroys the city in Makai, since we don't see it again in th 4,3,2 and 1
Yumeko and Orange are Sakuya and Meiling hiding from lunarians because war or some shit
Our current Marisa is actually Mima
PC98 Marisa is Marisa's and Rinnosuke's child
Yuuka in touhou 9 is a child with short hair while in touhou 4 she is a teenager
Yumemi is older Sumireko
Ellen is Mokou's child made by Eirin since she is immortal, but she ages backwards
Mokou recently shows up in a lot of games (ISC, Ulil), she is now sealed in a bronze disc under the name Kikuri
Kotohime is Kaguya (??????????)
Anaberal is actually poltergeist of Koishi (of a mentally retarded girl as said in cannon)

Shingyoku is the last boss, the God of Hakurei Shrine

Kokoro goes between the Buddhist and Taoist temples like a child of divorce.

Shinmyoumaru lets a bunch of Tsukumogami that were created by the mallet live in her castle.

Gensokyo is looked upon with disdain by youkai in the outside world- it's somewhere you go when you can't cut it anymore, it's a retirement home at best or a nature preserve at worst.

Raiko made a really lopsided deal with Yukari to get quick access to the outside world so she could save herself and the other temporary tsukumogami. Yukari has not come to collect yet, but Raiko's keeping her head down for now.

marisas hair was red at first because of mimas magic.

china is orange. after getting beat up by marisa/reimu she started working at sdm to get stronger.

time doesn't flow right in gensokyo, what they consider to be a month could be just a few days in our time (this would kinda explain why marisa, raymoo, and arisu are still only in their mid/late teens).

I have a lot regarding the Hakurei family as a whole, mostly because I play CK2 too much.

>Ran is or was responsible for looking after Hakurei mikos who inherited the position while they are still young children. Yukari programmed her with a more motherly personality to facilitate this.
>The extended Hakurei family have the status of nobility in the Village, and is the only human group permitted to bear arms outside of wartime.
>Bastards cannot inherit the Hakurei Shrine, nor can children born before a Hakurei miko and her husband's marriage, even if they are the miko's daughters.
>A Hakurei miko has the right to raise a militia, deputise people, take control of Village resources at will, and is the only person who may legally act against Yukari to preserve the balance of Gensokyo.
>Reimu's mother had an affair with one of Marisa's aunts. Yukari allowed it to happen because there could be no children as a result of the affair, and Reimu was already born when it started. Reimu's father allowed it to happen because he hated his wife and only stayed to raise Reimu. The incident was hushed up by the Hakurei family to avoid further embarrassment. The Kirisame family were less fortunate, and this combined with Marisa learning magic and the subsequent fight between Marisa and her father almost ruined the family completely.

Yuyuko is actually the smartest character in the series, from the direction of wisdom and intuition.
She masks it with practiced dissembling, seemingly operating on random whim and making nonsense comments while understanding complex situations at a glance.
She solved the incidents in both her fighting game appearances before any of the other characters investigating (and in Tenshi's case forced her to keep going because Yuyuko was having so much fun making snow out of soulstuff), brought fear to the elder god Omoikane (while having a fun lunar vacation), and didn't even bother getting off her porch when she sensed the revival of an emperor.
Despite not having the same head for number crunching as her demon sorceress BFF, she easily understands every plot from small hints and obscure references.

Her "ability to invoke death" is just the ability to control souls, full stop. She kills you by pulling your soul out. Reality was her plaything during the soul fog of Tenshi's incident, and the Hourai really bother her with their invulnerable golden souls.

She's also one of the best dancers in Gensokyo, as most of her combat moves involve spins, dashes, and backflips with her fans.

She sees ghosts as they were, so all the souls hanging around the Netherworld are like her personal harem of dead poet-samurai. The big soul midboss during her Ten Desires stage is actually a white knight defending his lady.

Part of the reason Celestials such as Tenshi are so tough is because they have mathmatically sublime bodies, with muscles, bones, organs etc -as if a god took the human body back to the drawing board and decided to shore up some issues.

With full control over sleeping patterns, hyperflexible joints, lack of sweat/appendix/nonstandard body hair, and excellent night vision, they are quite a step away from the standard human template.

This leads to them being mildly unsettling to humans, who seem dumpy and ungraceful in comparison. It's like if one of those airbrushed, photoshopped models from a magazine were like that 24/7. This gap is the reason why Celestial-Human relationships seem to break down after a while ( Like in Iku's article in the Symposium book)

The fact that Tenshi acts how she does actually makes her more personable than most others of her kind as a result.

(Lunarians are more akin to ''optimizing'' the human form for peak and pure performance rather than something entirely different.)

In typical moonscum hypocrisy, the Lunarians have been experimenting with Moon Rabbit bloodlines for years,in an attempt to bend the native species towards their will. This has resulted in some massive but inimitable successes (Reisen), and some weirder achievements (Ringo). Efforts were considerably hindered after Erin left.

The reason why the Lunarians were so eager to send rabbits down to Gensokyo recently (Instead of just continuing with the robots) was to act as a testbed - with the ultimate hope of making batches of loyal supersoldiers once they are able to isolate and replicate the right combination of abilities and temperment.

No wearing a head accessory without a good excuse is a matter of public taboo in Gensokyo, just like how it used to be in the outside world. Consider the bare-headed Windows characters:

-Kaguya does not go into public often
-Kogasa wants to surprise people
-Nue disguises herself constantly
-Parsee is something of a social misfit and lives underground
-Raiko has the excuse of being both young and having outside-world experience
-Yuuka purposefully does not do so as a testament to the fear and respect her strength fosters.

Remi and Flandre were based in West Europe before coming to Gensokyo, it was in the 1500s when vampire and witch hunting was at its peak. The Scarlet family was killed while the two children were able to escape

Meiling, who happened to be a human-looking youkai blending as a part of the Chinese diaspora in France, picked them up and took them in

Shortly after, they saved an accused witch from burning at the stake. The accused witches is Patchouli, who really was studying witchcraft and magic, and was already a magician.

They settled down in an abandoned mansion, with some effort and under Remilia's name they painted it red and fixed it up

Patchy was trying out summoning spells and summoned a succubus, who was actually OK with doing it with another female. Patchy had none of that shit and disciplined her until she started getting attached to her/the place, becoming her assistant Koakuma

There was a lost smol kid who wandered into the mansion and Remi picked her up, gave her a new name "Sakuya" and got her to work for the mansion. Sakuya later grew to love the mansion and its owner to an extreme degree

Because of the grand red color, the building attracted a lot of raiders, and Meiling/Patchy had to fight them off. Sakuya wanted to help fight too, so she learned some combat skills from Meiling and some magic from Patchy. Her strong desire desire to protect the mansion, on top of spending too much time with people with spiritual power, caused her to develop a new ability: to do time shenanigans. She practiced with throwing knives to help with her time powers and eventually became a very dangerous opponent

If ZUN won't add details then I'll think some up on my own

True to her name, Daiyousei is in fact a great fairy. That is, she's Mother Nature herself.
However, she's still as playful as any other fairies are, and prefer playing around with the others - all the while disguised as the smaller Daiyousei.
She is very close to Cirno because she fears that Cirno might become a youkai, and thus leave her side. So she monitors Cirno as much as she can, trying to keep her grounded to the reality of their existence as a fairy.

Hong Meiling is the last practitioner of an effectively dead martial arts style, which was in turn part of a larger group of legendary styles. These followed the Five Chinese elements, plus the Sun/Light and Moon/Dark similar to Patchouli's magic, in combination with the animal-styles common to China.

Meiling's is the Shining/Radiant Dragon Style, which focuses on mastery of your own Qi in order to wield it directly in combat, and to improve one's self. Most users and students of the style are only capable of projecting a single color in their aura, while the rainbow of colors Meiling is seen wielding is the result of a distinct level of mastery, rarely seen even among Grandmasters. This is because, while Qi naturally takes on the rainbow hue when inside the body, forcing it outwards dilutes it to a degree. Only through significant focus and training can someone become a direct conduit for their internal energies to flow freely.

Meiling came to learn this style after being confronted by a woman who had been sent to hunt down and destroy her, but instead chose to show Meiling mercy. With no other prospects and really no place else to go, Meiling was taken in as a student, both of the style and to expand her knowledge as well. She was taught how to read and write, much of China's history and mythology, about the gods and other spiritual creatures, and given a much better understanding of herself as a yaoguai and what that meant for her place in the world. After her master passed on, she was left the golden badge that was the mark of her school, and took on the name "Hong" to honor her memory.

Fast forward quite some time to the modern day, and these events play a major part influencing Meiling to try and reach out to Flandre, who hopes to in a way recreate her Master's act of kindness. While Flandre's situation is not nearly as desperate nor is she as miserable as Meiling was at the time, she goes along with it simply because she's glad to have the playmate, and it seems to make Meiling happy (for reasons she doesn't really understand).

At several points throughout Gensokyo's history, Hakurei mikos have had Kirisame partners, either as deputies, retainers, militia commanders, or even lovers. Most ended up killed or maimed in action, with a minority walking away on both legs.

Mr. Kirisame's younger sister was Reimu's mother's retainer and lover. When Reimu's mother was killed in action, her retainer chose to follow her lord into death, committing suicide.

Mr. Kirisame forbade Marisa from magical study in an effort to protect her from becoming yet another Kirisame killed in Hakurei service. However, Marisa rebelled, joined up with Mima as a mercenary, and then ultimately met Reimu.

A significant portion of resentment against Reimu comes from Marisa's father, who used to be a community leader in the village until Yukari sabotaged him by making his family troubles public knowledge so that he would not get the support to incite a popular uprising against Reimu.

Kourin chooses not to stick his nose in where it doesn't belong and mostly keeps out of the conflict despite his close ties to the Kirisame family. He also does this because he is aware of Yukari's actions and doesn't want to lose what little business he has.

Rinnosuke is more capable than he lets on. Not the badass or ultra powerful youkai when the "limiter" on his neck is taken off, as is seen sometimes, but more than enough to handle himself.

However, he is as unyoukailike as it gets otherwise. He doesn't really have much of an instinct for fighting, in fact having a distaste for conflict owing to everything he's seen but especially because of his human side, giving him empathy other youkai lack. He's more hardy than a human, but serious effort and physicality takes a toll on him so he needs to watch his health and so prefers to take it easy.

It's because of this he developed his skill for negotiation and willingness to look the other way, not get involved, blend in, etc.

Before meeting the Kirisames he made a meager living as a traveling salesman, craftsman, blacksmith, etc. took odd jobs, rummaged for valuables, etc. In his much younger days he was a little rougher around the edges, though, taking on more dangerous jobs and challenges.

Forever in the background, he's managed to unwittingly see and involve himself in a lot and has previously met many citizens of Gensokyo, including Yukari, but either doesn't remember or they don't remember him. This includes previous generations of the Hakurei line, becoming acquainted with them and eventually making their tools.

Her mother died early. Her father and Rinnosuke were the only two remaining. After Rinnosuke left to open Kourindou, her father wanted her to live a safe, ordinary life in the village, and eventually take over the family shop. However, she was too enamored with magic and youkai and too carefree and and such to follow along, so she studied magic on her own. Years later, over her father's objections to her wishes, she left and settled near big brother Rinnosuke who watched over her and studied under Mima. Both father and daughter care for each other, but are each too stubborn to turn back and admit it or that they were wrong and reconcile.

The bakeneko Chen is installed on doesn't really mind being controlled. The shikigami grants her body power well beyond anything she could achieve on her own in such a short time, plus being a loyal tool means she has a powerful benefactor.

Whenever Ran comes to the human village to shop or perform some other duty, local children gather to look at the "fox lady" from afar. Despite their parents' warnings, they follow her around, and occasionally some of the braver kids approach her and even try to start conversations ("Where do you live, fox lady?", "You're very pretty. I want to be just like you when I grow up!", "Are you Tamamo no Mae? My mom told me that you take bad children away", etc). Ran finds them strange yet somewhat amusing and cute and does her best to answer them.

Yukari Yakumo, "Youkai that lurks in the boundary", is better known in the outside world as Yog-Sothoth, "Lurker at the Threshold".

Among more civilized youkai, eating human flesh is actually considered inappropriate behavior these days. Youkai who still do it are looked down upon as savages who can't control their urges, and most of them prefer to hide in the wilderness and barely have any meaningful interactions with known characters. Also, it's one of the reasons Remilia encourages Flandre to stay inside, preferably in the basement - if word gets out that she feasts on prepared human flesh instead of drinking reasonable amounts of blood, SDM's reputation will plummet.

Yukari is basically team mom for Youkai everywhere. If Youkai believed in Santa, they probably imagine they're like Yukari.

Picture this, you're an average Youkai who lives inna woods and basically, you wanna eat humans. But if you eat villagers, the Shrine Maiden will kick your ass.

So Yukari in all her gracious Youkai loving kindness, drops some punk ass kid no one would miss literally right in your lap to do what you wish with, eat or not, whatever.

And then after you're done, she disposes of the remains and pats you on the head for doing good and being what she considers a good Youkai (Spooking humans/eating them)

Basically she's Youkai God to the average, nameless Youkai. Sure Byakyuren is Youkai Jesus, but you don't see her going out and feeding the masses, she just has them come to her to 'pray' and 'live in harmony'

While there's very little in canon to support this, I prefer to believe that the Lunar War was a regular war involving both the US and Soviet Union temporarily allying to fight the Lunarians, mostly because space war is cool.

The war started in 1969 following the Eagle Lander Skirmish, which ended with zero US losses and three Lunarian KIA when Module Pilot Buzz Aldrin broke a Lunarian soldier's neck on the Eagle's landing gear, and Commander Neil Armstrong seized a Lunarian rifle and returned fire, killing two Lunar Rabbit soldiers. The footage showed to the world was emergency false footage prepared by the CIA in the event of alien life being discovered.

The Lunarians established contact with President Richard Nixon and issued a declaration of war in response to the invasion of Lunarian soil. The existence of hostile extraterrestrials confirmed, Nixon authorised the creation of the United States Extraterrestrial Command - USXCOM. By the end of July, the USXCOM had launched an offensive onto the Sea of Tranquillity and were holding steady.

The war reached stalemate as the Lunarians had a home and technological advantage. This changed when the Soviet Union offered to assist the US in the war in 1970, as the Soviet leadership felt that the Lunarians were a global threat that threatened the Soviet Union as much as it threatened the US, and that the US was the lesser of two evils.

By 1972, however, the war had become too expensive to continue, both economically and in terms of human casualties that had no reasonable explanation. Therefore, on June 6th, 1972, the US and Soviet Union made the decision to jointly launch nuclear weapons at military and civilian targets on the Lunar surface, as the Lunarians at the time did not have a second strike capacity. The Lunarians realised something was wrong when human forces began rapidly retreating, and raised magical shields over major cities. However, the nuclear detonations managed to shatter most shields, as while the Lunarians believed the shields would protect them, humanity collectively believed that nuclear weapons were world-ending superweapons - Humans believed in the destructive power of nuclear weapons far more than the Lunarians believed that their shields could protect from them - The Cold War had ironically saved Earth. Over 70% of Lunarian civilisation was destroyed in the nuclear strikes and the Lunatic Kingdom surrendered three hours later.

That is why the Lunar Capital is the only Lunarian settlement seen in canon, as it was the only city not destroyed in the Lunar War.

I realize this is a headcanon thread but Cirno's motivation and power level has actually been discussed before in PoFV.

Eiki has told her that she really is very strong for a fairy, and has already pushed herself to the upper limits of the power a fairy can have. If she goes further, she will become a low-level youkai. However, she would lose her immortality and her fairy-born powers of nature. Knowing that seems to rattle Cirno.

She definitely believes herself to already be the strongest so your idea seems pretty plausible, but it's not just that, she likely doesn't want to actually have to face mortality by pushing herself too far. Fairies are already weaker, pushing herself into low youkai territory and getting herself killed is probably not the wisest thing to do.
