Dear /jp/, i have decided to increase my powerlevel by learning le langue japonais

Now I have decided to watch animu raw, subtitle-less, with my piddling vocabulary of すし, サムライ, and 超萌えるぜ.

Help /jp/, how do i save myself?

I was going to read some light novels, thought it would be good practice. Nothing but a wall of imposing foreign text.

Isn't Touhou a bunch of obscure references stacked upon moeblob lolis clothed in strange frilly pseudo-gothic-yet-poorly-drawn costumes? I'm already learning one language--I have no interest in learning two.

Listen, I'm sure everyone knows this, but I'll lay it down simple so you can spread the news to your friends.
Learning a language is just like getting good at anything. Only raw force of will will get the job done.
If you want to become, lets say for the sake of 4channers in general, a computer/webpage programmer, you don't just sit down and try to build a huge, java heavy, hand-coded site as your first shot. You start slow, with tiny steps, and practice and learn EVERY DAY. Thats the key. In time, you'll become good, because you never, ever, never, ever, never stop. As soon as you stop, you lose.
If you really love the Japanese language, as with any language (as well as anything you love!), nothing should keep you from it. But be assured, there's a distinct reason why so few westerners learn the language: your blood has to run thick to stay with it for long enough to really reap the rewards.
If you're still young (especially in high school, early in college,) you still have plenty of time to take actual classes to kickstart your learning; but like anything, you'll fizzle out in mediocrity if you don't grab your passion by the reigns and force yourself to learn it.
I'm sure this will get plenty of trolling, but for anyone who //actually// is interested in learning the Japanese language with a greater passion than just for understanding your waifu in her native tongue, you should know that nothing keeps your from doing it but your own willpower, and lots of time.

Tl;dr - Shit is hard. Just keep doing it. It doesn't ever get easier, but the rewards get better.

this man is correct.
There have been billions of threads on /jp/ already, discussing the "best" way to learn japanese, etc. I say that's the worst thing you can do. If you're gonna do it, do it, and keep doing it.
I started with something that as of now, I would never recommend to anyone (I started listening to Pimsleur tapes and considered Rosetta stone, shit was not so cash). You will have to find the best way for you to learn Japanese yourself, be it classes, self study or whatever. If you hate VN, don't play them, if you have a favorite Anime then go watch that and look up words you don't know (since you already seem to know hiragana and katakana)

Hey, listen to me for a moment, a'ight? I don't care if it's not related to this thread. Just listen!
Yesterday, I went over to Yoshinoya for a simple meal. Yes, THAT beef bowl house, Yoshinoya.
But the whole restaurant was so crowded, I couldn't even find a seat for hours!
Then I saw a poster that said "Special offer! 150 yen discount".
I thought to myself... geez, that's so fucking amazing. You guys don't even normally visit Yoshinoya.
All you bastards came here just for that stupid-assed 150 yen discount.
Just for that 150 yen. ONE FREAKIN' FIFTY YEN!!

Then I saw some parents & children. A family of four eating out at Yoshinoya. Damn, so much for that bitch's home-cooked family feast.
Then one of the little brats said "Daddy's gonna order a large beef bowl".
I couldn't believe it! Uuuuuggh, are you out of your fucking mind!?
Shiiit, i'll pay you 150 yen just to move your stanky fat-ass out of a seat.
Dude, you just don't go to Yoshinoya for that lala-oh-i'm-so-happy dinner bullshit.
It's where you pick a fist-fight with the fucking guy sitting across 'yah in that U-shaped table.

>> No.1629459

How the fuck can you say "lotta' gravy" with that "oh, i'm so fucking cool, hur-hur-hur..." look!?!?
Damn, I was THIS CLOSE to standing in front of his face and yelling "DO YOU EVEN LIKE EATING THAT MUCH FUCKIN' GRAVY!?"
For a freaking hour, I was THIS CLOSE to doing that.
Shit, I bet you just wanted to use the words "lotta' gravy" out loud. Wow, you're so clever.
Dude, you gotta be like ME. See, now I know what's "all that" in Yoshinoya.
What's cool right now to say is "Negi-daku". That's it!
You see now, a large beef bowl with a lotta onions & an egg is what the hardcore Yoshinoya freaks eat. Like ME.
Saying "Negi-daku" means that you get less meat, but they put a WHOLE MESS of onions.
Mmmmm... a large beef bowl with onions & an egg, now THAT'S what I call a meal.
But anywhoo... ordering that is kinda' like a double-edged sword. Cuz' then the waiters might notice you the next time you come by.
So yeah, I can't reccomend this to noobs.
For you, just go order a beef and salmon combo. That's as far as you can go, you know what i'm sayin'?

You ain't gonna learn a goddamn thing watching anime without subtitles unless you already have a decent understanding of the Japanese language. That said, if you've got 1-2 years of actual study under your belt, manga is a great way to continue learning: I recommend Shin-Chan for this. Most manga will work fine, but Shin-Chan seems to worked best for me: it's got Furigana accompanying the Kanji, and you pick up on a lot of colloquialisms from it.

>> No.1629725

You will quit probably a week after cracking open a real grammar book.

Seriously, fuck you. Lazy "lol animu lol teh moonspeak <3" zilches like you add a stigma to learning this language.

You are a loser, you obviously don't know a damn thing about learning languages, and you probably don't even possess the tiniest fraction of the dedication or self-discipline required to learn a language, much less fucking Japanese. Get real.

Cry moar. Elitists like yourself serve only to undermine the already-small base that /jp/ is built on. (Small--That's what she said.)

Know that one day, all that will be left is you, your basement, and your hug pillow.

>>1629666
> 1-2 years of actual study under your belt
I don't know if I agree with that number. I'd expect to be decently fluent by the end of 1-2 years of serious study.

I've been casually learning over the past few years, but I picked up a few books recently after starting one of the million 'what book should i use' threads nobody cares about. I'm having fun and honestly, what the rest of the world thinks has nothing to do with me. The grammar is a pain in the ass but I've always wanted to speak a third language fluently.

Ok, done being serious. Also, lol animu lol teh moonspeak <3

I like big black dicks. I transected one in an anatomy lab with a scalpel a few years ago. It was enjoyable. The livor mortis made it especially fun to cut in half since it was about eight inches long.

I would do it again.

There's a reason it's small, and a reason we are "elitists."

A big part of that reason is that people who say things "Cry moar" need to be quarantined to shitholes like /b/ where their retardation can't negatively influence anyone whose brain still functions for things other than regurgitating memes and organizing protests.

The day you show me a published article in a peer-reviewed journal showing beyond the shadow of a doubt that there is a causal relationship between a man shouting a catchphrase and his mental capacity, I shall accede to your demands and promptly GTFO.

No, the reason you are an elitist is because your personality is incompatible with society at large and you overcompensate for your shortcomings by convincing yourself that your intellect is superior to those who disagree with you.

And no, you won't be fluent in 1-2 years.
