Which touhou game does one get into the genre?
I've read all the manga's and wants to know the rest of the story in the games.

>> No.16273460

Start with touhou 6, work your way up. easy.

Don't be a scrub, start with Touhou 1 and end with 15 like everyone should do.

6 a shit, took me a week of regular play to be able to beat it on normal without continues. 7 is a better one to start from.

LoLK!

That's better than average. You aren't meant to be able to clear quickly when you just start.

As for OP, any of 6, 7, 8 are the usual suggestions. Pick the one that appeals to you the most so you actually want to play it.

You also don't really need to actually play the games to get the story since there are compilations of all the dialogue and copies of the omake and character profiles. But play them anyways.

I started with LoLK and I love the series.
Hit head against wall. Repeat. Get wrecked even harder when you realize the other games don't have checkpoints.

If you're looking to get into danmaku in general, I consider 4 to be one of the best introductions to the genre I've played, with simple and easy patterns and no gimmicks like what the later games have. 5, 6, and 10 work well in that regard too, but these aren't as beginner friendly as 4.

If you want to get into the Touhou games specifically, I'd say start from the very beginning, but you can start with 6 if you really don't like PC-98 for some reason. There are only two or three times events from the first five games are ever mentioned in later installments.

this so much, also seihou 1 would be great after touhou 6 mecanic wise

What stupid fucking suggestions. Nobody wants to play 20-year-old shit that requires emulation as their first game in the series.
Just start wherever the fuck you want. My personal suggestions are PCB (easy + first 'polished' win game), IN (arguably the easiest) or MoF (simple, first 'modern' game, teaches you to bomb), but that is entirely up to you.

>> No.16274493

If all you want is the story, you could just watch videos of playthroughs and read the dialogue in all the routes.

>> No.16274516

>>16274294
I'd avoid MoF simply because of the way continues work in that game. Someone new to the series probably will want to be able to bomb through a level to unlock the practice or at least move on the the other parts of the game without getting stuck at one roadblock.

People usually say 6, 7, 8, or 10.
I'd say that 6 is a good choice for beginners because it has no mechanics and works well (despite it needing vsync)

7 is easy because it's 6 but with easier scoring, meaning you can get a lot of lives and not try that hard on the later stages.

8 is a bit too mechanically complex for beginners, so I'm going to skip it.

10 is simply TH07 but easier, since you can spam bombs pretty well.

I will say that is you really want something easy, yet rather hard, TH02 is where you go.
It's TH06 without deathbombing, meaning you must bomb before the item hits you.
It also supplies you with a hefty amount of lives, more than you'll probably need if you bomb liberally.

DON'T start with TH01 under ANY circumstance. It's too different from the rest of the series for you to gain skill on it, other than spamming bombs quite a lot.

TH03 and 09 are risky picks. While it is danmaku, it isn't the mainline style, as you 1v1 the AI instead of mercilessly beating up the boss.

The photography games can work, but are a bit harder than just holding Z.

ISC is a puzzle game, not a shmup.

TH11 is the Dark Souls of the series, as the only way you get life pieces is from the boss instead of score. It's also a bit difficult to dodge some patterns.

TH12 is TH13's mechanic, except with items that move and change their mechanic (some of them). Instead of getting a ton of spirits, you simply need 3 UFO's.

TH14 is rather fun in difficulty. It isn't really hard, nor is it really easy. The mechanic is simply "How much stuff can you auto collect at once?". If you can get a bonus 2.0 easily, then it'll be a cakewalk. If not, you'll just have to use bombs a bit more.

TH15 is the hardest of the series, so play Marisa Lunatic on it.

This. You should not miss out on games like LLS and Mystic Square. Those are still pretty solid games.
And also, use the "T-98 Next" emulator for the first 5 games. The game run pretty smoothly with it.

Avoid Anex86 at all costs, it's utter shit. It suffers from input lag and the audio is just bad.

Do people actually think it's still a 1cc if you give yourself more than the default amount of lives?

I'd call it a shmup puzzle game. I mean, it's basically like any other game except with (arguably) harder patterns and items to get through them. You still shoot and dodge and sometimes time out.

I don't know about others but all I did was years ago grab this Touhou collection torrent from nyaa with all the Windows games + some more famous fangames.

I only used the thing this year but it worked fine. It DID use thcrap which I've heard is irritating because it updates automatically, but I'm pretty ignorant and at the very least can find the raw scripts easily if I question the translation.

but figuring out how to actually get them working was easy, I just googled it
