I don't think having a song with a lot of variety or different styles is "gimmicky", that just makes it an interesting song. By your definition most progressive rock songs would also be gimmicky. I never implied that you were criticizing other songs. I said that your complaint is extremely strange and misdirected because you were complaining that that particular nanahira song was "gimmicky" and "overboard" when it was obviously performed by an artist that loves to be excessive and do gimmicks and belongs to a whole genre that loves to be excessive and do gimmicks. Some artists' entire albums are gimmicks, nevermind a single track. So it seems to me like you're either very confused, or you know jack shit about denpa

>> No.16214379

There's definitely a code of ethics in music, especially in niche indie genres, of which denpa is a part.

It's pretty basic. Stay true to your musical vision. Don't sell out your mission statement. Most artists are trying to express themselves creatively, which is almost always diametrically opposed to selling their art as a commodity.

This works even if you apply it to denpa. How would people react if a beloved otaku favorite suddenly started playing po-faced traditional folk? I can't imagine they'd keep their fans.

I'm not >>16214325 by the way

>>16214379

Um, I'm pretty sure you have it backwards with that last example, sticking only to the music people want from you is what might be considered lacking in integrity. Making the music you want to make (even if it's not what your fans want) is what's commonly referred to when people talk about musical integrity. Not that I think that actually matters, in the end a song is good if it's good and bad if it's bad it doesn't matter whether it's what the artist truly wanted to make. I'd appreciate it if you provided me with whatever you definition of "artistic integrity" is because based on the common definition of making art because you want to and not for profit just switching genres would not lack integrity.

Well, I share uploads and opinions to these threads and have quite a negative opinion of some of the more talked about stuff around here.

Feeling free to post uploads has become a waning sensation personally, since most people who are talking in these threads seem to hold the opinion that mainstream sounds and popular identity are what is indicative of great denpa.

It makes me not even want to use the term anymore, because I've been relating it to a subversive style of music and that is exactly the opposite of what most people will want to listen to. And it seems like the gates have opened to just about anybody with the idea that moe voice over any kind of music is 'cool' now.

Now, I'm even getting the impression that our beloved denpa music is going to get bastardized in the form of some obnoxious lolicore or something. It has me very discouraged lately, but I guess we'll see how it goes.

Just because someone expresses a hateful opinion, doesn't make them a whiny baby. (If there is enough positive expression of the opposite opinion, then there can be an equal amount to go against it.)

Just because someone chooses to go against the popular current, doesn't mean they do it to feel smug either. (You might have a personal problem with it, but a little niche genre which is evolved and named by actual weirdo aspects of modern society is not something that will ever exist in a 'popular' mentality.)

Once, I tried to describe the notion that lyrics are like a distraction, and that it helps me to understand the music better without knowing the meaning behind every word. Before I started listening to denpa, I avoided most English-speaking music for that reason and listened to a lot of instrumentals instead. In denpa songs, or the moe stuff that I mostly listen to, the point that they are singing cutely is enough for me to have a sense of the concept and really just enjoy the overall cute vibe. A rough translation of the title is usually enough to satisfy my curiosity. Sometimes I may ask on here what a certain phrase means.

For me, lyrics get in the way a lot of times, and I more admire the melody and the voice in which they are sung anyway. Someone else might say that I can't possibly appreciate denpa to the fullest without understanding the subject matter, and to a certain degree I would agree. But I don't really care.

Arguments like yours are often made by people who know jack shit about the creative process. Even if we assume that an artist is merely "selling their art as a commodity" based on how the song is written, it still qualifies as an artistic mode of expression that is inseparable from one made with so-called "pure" intentions. You'd either have to be a psychic to enforce your shit ethics system, or an indignant cunt that attributes ill intentions to artists you dislike.

So, anon. Which are you? A psychic or a cunt?

Interesting how someone who claims to "work in the music business" (I can't help but notice you didn't actually say you're an artist) and who puts so much importance on their own arbitrary definition of artistic integrity can so blithely complain about artists choosing to use multiple styles in a song or switching to a new genre.

If an artist releases an album to the world, then it becomes more of a responsibility that we have as an entire species to question the integrity of what is being consumed. >If I feel that what you are consuming is bad, then I need to understand why you are doing it.
Except every time someone explains it to you you just act like a sarcastic douchebag

Let me make it easier for you. For some people, how a piece of artistic work makes them feel IS their criteria for quality. Before you respond, why don't you just stop for a moment and consider that point. If you ever studied math/logic extensively it shouldn't come as a surprise to you that what you're dealing with there basically amounts to an axiom about artistic quality that differs from your own.
It simply might not be possible for you to reconcile that with your own view, you just have to accept it.

If the criteria for what is denpa music were made as rigid and formulaic as you seem to want it to be from the start then denpa probably wouldn't even exist today.
and if it did, it would probably be just as cliched or boring as you think some of the music is now too, but just for different reasons.

If there's any problem here it isn't that people like something. The problem would be that people ARE trying too hard to define what is and what isn't denpa. Because nanahira is considered to be denpa right? Anything she puts out is going to be "denpa" if she wants it to be isn't it?
That's where treating art as you're doing lands us. So your proposed solutions are the very thing that causes the problem in the first place.

Denpa in the past was, and should have remained, a non-genre. Just a label that people can affix to certain songs that they FEEL sounds "denpa" as a community driven thing (just like saying a song feels "happy").
Today it's becoming more and more of an actual genre and that's causing the issues you speak of, and it also happens to be the result of people doing what you're doing.

Just relax, feel the music, forget about the artist. Take on a case by case basis, and everything would be fine. But of course it isn't like the western audience for this stuff is going to influence the artists in any way, so none of this matters at all.

>What makes a denpa song that hasn't been dulled by exposure to a broader audience?
The fact that is so creatively solid in its uniqueness that the general audience won't dare to flock to it.

>It's dull, can't you tell?
Denpa? No, because I only started listening recently and don't actually know what this whole nudenpa/trudenpa or w/e distinction is. I've only been listening to ななひら and ももばこ and I'm guessing they are whom you're referring to, and that would make me the broader audience. I can see the exposure resultant "dulled" "focal points" of other genres which I am more familiar with, but not denpa, not because I deny it, but because I even know what they are.

1. They think denpa = moe pop or happy hardcore
2. They have no songs made before 2007 on their denpa playlist
3. They don't understand denpa's origins in eroge
4. They can't or do not try to understand the lyrics
5. They listen almost exclusively to Denpagumi Inc., Koko, Choko, Momobako, or Nanahira (keyword here is exclusively)
6. They don't care about composers

Always amusing whenever somebody tells others how they're not enjoying things correctly. I'm personally purely in it for the music. Metashit like the origins of a particular music genre or who composed what have never interested me or been a factor in how I appreciate its sounds. This goes for denpa as well as any other genre that I listen to.

The not understanding lyrics thing does bother me but seeing as how there's no real solution to this short of learning japanese, I tend to just ignore it

You're supposed to be amused by the music - enough to research the composers of your favorite sounds even, and to not be so blatantly ignorant about any aspect of it.

Just stop reacting so suddenly to things people say on here. Your post begins with a defensive sarcasm: "Always amusing" - No, you're annoyed or otherwise agitated by something. Figure it out. It always goes deeper than what you'll immediately feel.

The most bizarre thing about this whole discussion is that these threads probably wouldn't even exist were it not for eroge makers in the late nineties/early aughts trying to stand out in an increasingly crowded market by having weird opening themes. We are literally here as a result of songs made for marketing purposes existing. You'd think snobbery over "creative vision" would be something far removed from this place.

>> No.16297959

>>16295799
Denpa and moe are cultural things, just judging by the sound isn't enough. The difference is the cultural context. They were one of the pioneers of moe pop in an era where self-aware moe otaku culture was breaking from within a clique into the mainstream (first half of the 2000s) in an environment where otaku and akiba culture were really frowned upon, much more than today. Later MOSAIC.WAV described themselves as Akiba-pop, which is spot on; it's closely related to these developments.

These developments were shocking at the time, especially songs that rebelliously and proudly exploited this full-throttle, which is why they were recognized as denpa (brainwashing) songs by the otaku net community at the time. In the other hand this culture traveled to the west much more slowly therefore we might be missing the "shock" aspect, unless you had Internet since the 90s and had access to these things.

What >>16282729 said is interesting, UNDER17 was closely related to eroge culture between 2000~2003 and did several opening songs, Popotan's being the most well-known. Their stand-alone songs and movement that followed was highly inspired by their work here. Listening to old eroge songs is a fun way to observe this development throughout the years and it's an interesting topic for anyone interested in moe and its developments.

There was also an interest in denpa songs outside of the moe sphere but it mostly died out, sadly.

>>16296375
Why do people assume it's one person? Please enlighten us, I think the cultural context is essential to understanding the phenomenon. I agree that there's no need to be obnoxious about it, though.

Why are people so autistic and keep acting like they're mama's special little snowflake? Genres exist to sort music, not to define it. If music sounds "too similar" that means the genre is doing a fine job at classification. That's literally the only reason it exists.

Making music just to sound wacky and different is an equal amount of tryhard faggotry as making music just to appeal to a wide audience. In reality, most artists just create whatever they enjoy and are inspired by. Guess what? That means large throngs of people can form and end up liking the same stuff. BUT OH GOD I CAN'T LET THAT HAPPEN. I NEED TO BE UNIQUE OR ELSE I MIGHT AS WELL KILL MYSELF.
