Previous thread: >>16222059

This thread is for the discussion and learning of Japanese with raw otaku media.
If you have no interest in otaku media we recommend heading over to /int/'s 日本語スレッド.
Please use sage. This isn't /a/ or /int/, you don't have to keep bumping the thread all the time for no reason.

Let's have a nice thread by reporting and ignoring off-topic posts.

How to get your thread protected on /jp/
-Start an offtopic thread on /a/
-Wait until it gets so shitty that not even /a/ wants it
-Now that your thread is shit and hated by the board move it to /jp/
-Done! You can now circlejerk on /jp/ and the mods will ban everyone who protests.

Nope. I can't even write some of the kana from memory. It's common to hear traditional teaching methods say you have to learn to write, it's essential to learning to read, but in reality it's possible to be able to read advanced, complex literary texts and not write a single kana.

Stroke order is correct. In the picture it does look like it was done in two strokes though.

On that train of thought: 母 always throws me off. I need to make a conscious effort to only do the rectangle with 2 strokes since I'm used to squares/rectangles using 3.

It rips the text from the VN and outputs it to you in plaintext format so you can use Rikaisama on it and hence mine it. I'll just respond here instead of the other thread.

You can start with Yotsuba and you probably should, but mining from it isn't easy because you'll have to type everything in. There was a Yotsuba Reading Pack that I was going to recommend, but I can't find a download of it anymore.

Hanahira is the easiest VN there is and after that I recommend Flyable Heart.

The texthooker takes the text from the VN and copies it to the clipboard, then Clipboard Inserter pastes it into Firefox so you can read/mine it with Rikaisama.

Yes, you can, but it's usually reserved to foreigner names.
Anime/manga names are generally written in katakana because of a few reasons: one is the authors can choose names based on their sounds more freely. There is also the fact that it is easier to read (since kanji names may have dubious readings if you go out of the common-place pool of names). You want your audience to know your character's name and propagate them.

But I believe there is a coller reason - not limiting your character to a single set of kanji and making the audience fill in the blanks. That can add some depth to a character's name. Here's an example from the top of my head, not sure how many are true, but gives you some perspective:

English. I'm from a pretty small country so there's a lack of native material to begin with. There's some schools that teach the language in my city but they mostly use English textbooks as far as I am aware. Besides, what DJT offers is mostly in English either way, so you know where that line of thought goes.

Frankly, if you aren't at the level at which you can use the available English guides comfortably, as an ESL you should probably work on that before getting into a language that is as niche as Japanese.

I have no problem reading English, it's just that the fact that learning a new language from a non-native language seems weird to me. I don't translate English to my native language in my head. MMm nah, in fact, it doesn't seem weird to me, in fact I'm just used to prefer my native language to English when it comes to animu or video games, but since learning Japanese is quite a serious thing, I guess I'll go the English way. After all, I'll read japanese in japanese, eheh.
Fuck, I keep changing my mind. My problem is that in English guides, it keeps talking about differences between the two languages, comparaisons etc etc... Oh fuck it, I'll learn the English way. Sorry, I disturbed everyone, here.

I have a grammar question regarding honorifics: when is it acceptable to drop them?

I ask, because when I watch K-On, they drop in and out of them, even between characters that wouldn't be considered close friends: Yui always calls says "Nodoka-chan", but Mio and Ritsu have called her just "Nodoka" to her face or when talking about her while she's right next to them. There's some kind of subtext I'm missing here.

There isn't a set rule for this kind of thing because there aren't any set rules governing interpersonal relationships either. In this case, since Yui and Nodoka are childhood friends, and given Yui's personality, it makes sense that she would use "-chan". Mio and Ritsu aren't that close to Nodoka but there isn't much of a difference in social standing, so (to me, at least) "-san" would come across as overly stiff.

>when is it acceptable to drop them?
You drop the -san when you're acquainted with someone. You go the extra mile and make it a -chan or -kun if you are either really close to them or if you are talking from a higher (informal) position - say an adult towards a kid.

If you do it with someone who hasn't given you that kind of freedom, it will sound belittling, ironic.
Which reminds me of an episode of Durarara!! where a journalist goes around asking about Shizuo, the most feared thug around. Turns out he interviews the second top-dog and he says something along "Oh, you wanna know about Shizu-chan?" and the journalist gasps at the cute, girly nickname he's given to the guy. Naturally, they are mortal enemies, and he's a cheeky bastard. Shizuo on the other hand only calls him by the first name, no honorifics, demonstrating no love, but also no politeness.

I've never understood sentence decks. With vocab you attempt to learn specific words and then when you encounter them while reading you know them already. What's the aim with sentence decks? You're unlikely to see the sentence you're doing in the wild, so are you trying to learn the individual words in the sentence? Wouldn't it be more efficient to have each word on its own card, with an example sentence designed to show the meaning of that specific word? I don't understand.

Sentence decks aren't for words. They're far too time consuming for that. If you want to learn words you want to use a vocabulary deck, not a sentence deck. If you want to improve your overall grasp on the language you want to read, not use sentence decks. What the hell is your concept of your method? The only people I see use sentence decks for a legitimate reason are people who are cramming for tests and people who legitimately have too few words to read. You do not have too few words to read. But I am reading my sentences and the definitions in Japanese? I get that it's boring material, but is it really much different from reading a variety of material? I don't think I'm memorizing the sentences on my cards since there are over 10k (sentence on the front / definition sentence on the back).

Once I get a break from work I will try some vocabulary cards for ~100 or so words and see how things work out. At age 12 I was watching an anime that had a very remarkable opening.

The opening was about 2 minutes, it was a cute little girl singing a song, and in the chorus she kept saying "Yahoo!"

And the music was about 5 or 6 chords.

Does anyone know the anime / the music? Save my nostalgia, please. Thank you.

Someone recommend me an LN. Preferably one filled with long speeches about the meaning of life. Something like this:

今回だって自分は、人生で本当に大切なことに気づけた。

 それを知らなければ人生の大半損してしまうぞ、ってくらい重要なことだ。

 あまりにも単純で当たり前の話だから、どうしてそんなものに気づけていなかったんだよと、人によっては言うかもしれない。

 でも、本当に大切なことを上っ面の言葉だけではなく、『本当の意味で理解する』のはなかなかに大変で難しいことなのだ。

 自分の生きたいように、勝手に好きに生きること

I was using libreoffice. The only way to get html markup out of it is to export to xhtml, which causes all markup changes to use spans with class styles. It's probably theoretically possible to have a program fix it up to simple text markup tags, but I don't know of any existing tool that does it.

「進級がかかっている」

Can someone explain what 進級 is? Jisho says "promotion (school, military, etc.)" but it doesn't really make sense in context. Basically one character states they have to go to school the next day because they have a test, then they say this line:

「俺は進級がかかっている…ケンカしすぎちゃった。」
