Previous thread: >>16210877

This thread is for the discussion and learning of Japanese with raw otaku media.
If you have no interest in otaku media we recommend heading over to /int/'s 日本語スレッド.
Please use sage. This isn't /a/ or /int/, you don't have to keep bumping the thread all the time for no reason.

Let's have a nice thread by reporting and ignoring off-topic posts.

I remember back when the monmusu general came here. A lot of people were also very intent on making them feel unwelcome.
Like them, I hope you can weather the first few weeks. You'll be fine after that.
I doubt either of us wants to be here, and I'm sorry you have to adapt to a different board climate. I hope you find it in your heart to contain yourselves in spite of the hostilities.
I don't want you to think that everybody in here hates you, so finally, even though we likely won't meet again, I'd like to formally invite you to cum in /jp/, and I hope you enjoy your stay.
To everybody else, please remember that you have the option to hide threads by globbing the subject line.

These people are exactly like the safespace liberal cunts in real life who see a group acting in a way and simply try to commandeer and take over the dominating sentiment that people hold (i.e. Multiculturalism is great, if you don't like it, then you're simply a racist!)

Both the falseflagging conspirationists and the resident jays are correct.

Remember - the moment we got kicked out of /a/, dozens of anti-DJT troopers rose from the shadows and shat on it 24/7 over /a/, /qa/ and /int/, posting screenshots and using the same cookie-cutter arguments to exhaustion. Once we settled down, they were gone.

Now that they see a different turn of events, it's only natural that they try to shit the opportunity up as a way to push everyone back there. We're talking about people who spent months undermining the thread on purpose to get rid of it on /a/.

Fundamentally my beef with DJT is not that learning Japanese is a bad thing, or that learning Japanese is antithetical to /jp/. It's that the thread has already created the expectations that:

- you will be spoonfed if you ask questions
- you are allowed to blog about random shit
- the thread belongs to its regulars and you can do whatever the fuck you want

As long as the thread is DJT or the DJT successor, its residents will have this cancerous feeling of entitlement. In a thread where the entirety of the thread is barely edging on the on-topic, everyone should always be trying to justify their existence.

No.

Please don't learn kanji in isolation unless you cannot learn japanese any other way.

If you insist on studying kanji in isolation, I highly recommend a particular doraemon-themed kanji study book meant for elementary schoolers. If you can't read simple japanese, use Conning's Kodansha Kanji Learner's Course instead, because it narrowly avoids the worst pitfalls of other common english-language kanji resources.

If you can't handle using a book, try GeneticKanji, Kanjidamage, or Wanikani. Note that WK is a subscription paid service that will cost a bare minimum three digits in USD before you reach a reasonable level in what it's teaching you, and you should avoid it unless you REALLY cannot use a book and REALLY need a spoonfeeding service.

Kanji writing practice is very time consuming and should only be done in low volume, or if you really want to handwrite kanji.

Everybody shut up and listen to me because I know what I'm talking about.

/jp/ has Japanese language learning threads all the damn time and has for awhile. Threads titled "done your reps today anon?" are commonplace. DJT is unambiguously, doubtlessly, 100% on topic for /jp/. This is not up for debate, due to the historical precidence behind this, and because it's pretty fucking obvious that learning Japanese is relevant to /jp/.

Everyone arguing about whether DJT is on topic or not - stop. It is. There's no argument here.

Where the argument IS, is whether DJT *belongs* on /jp/. Focus on that. Points of contention are:
- DJT is a general
- DJT has a lot of posters from /a/, and will thus bring in outsiders to the board.
- Janitors are human beings with personal biases, if they don't like DJT it doesn't matter how the fuck relevant and on topic it is, Jannies rule and will fuck DJT up if they don't want it here.

Focus your debates on those points. Everything else is irrelevant.

The reason why DJT is no longer allowed on /a/ is because it has drifted too far away from the subject matter of the board, which is very specifically anime & manga.

While some of the content of DJT might be related to anime & manga, the vast majority of the content of DJT threads is not. Translating anime & manga is certainly directly related to the board's topic, as is asking about the nuances of Japanese critical to understanding a story which may be lost on translation. However, the majority of DJT's content is about learning and practicing the Japanese language in general, and not specifically as it pertains to anime or manga. Additionally, the threads tend to attract lots (and lots) of blogging and other off-topic 'chat room' style content which has no place on /a/.

Again, we want to stress that specific threads about translating raw anime & manga are allowed (and encouraged!), as they are grounded in the subject matter of the board. However, DJT can no longer be said to be filling that role.

If you want help with learning to read Japanese or if you want to practice writing/conversing in Japanese then you should post on /int/. Threads about translating raw anime & manga should be made on a per episode/chapter basis. Threads asking questions regarding the nuances of a translation should be made about a specific scene or piece of dialog. Please be specific, not general.

>Much less than many other threads all over both /jp/ and /a/.
Blogging is often on-topic. Even then it is sometimes shit.

On the other hand, often it is not quite so shit - if you are blogging about something on-topic (for example, the entirety of the VN thread can be likened to a blog where people discuss what they played and their impressions of it), then your post is both about something on-topic that people interested in, and about yourself. Even if nobody gives a shit about you, your post is valuable.

On the other hand, a mere notification that you are reading some manga is not, especially when that manga is not /jp/ material and is only relevant to people who want to discuss manga (which is off-topic) or who want to discuss you (which is cancerous social media behavior.)

/jp/ would have a problem with a 30th general?

Is it that DJT isn't degenerate enough to fit in with the onahole general, vocaloid general, schoolgirl general, dakimakura general, rhythm game general, jav general, 3 doll generals and 6 idol generals?

I've been a DJT regular for a few years now and I must say owe the place a lot for having handed me the necessary tools and atmosphere to become pro-efficient in the language. This whole "we kick you to /int/" thing has been upsetting for sure, but forcing DJT into /jp/ is another story.

Although I'm sort of ignorant (for now) about Touhou in general aside from the great fanarts and chara designs, and pretty much most generals around here, I've been browsing /jp/ for the Vocaloid general for a few years now but never intruded on the rest of the board by respect for others' hobbies. It makes me feel bad for /jp/anons around here to have to deal with another general on their catalog, especially when the said general, I suppose, didn't even have that many /jp/ regulars in the first place, it just doesn't sit right with me. Another point is DJT itself; let's not kid ourselves guys, DJT went to shit and what happened was inevitable. Just take a look at over at /int/, most of the people there were what DJT had become, a cancerous nest infested of クソリア銃 who do not give a single shit about Japanese otaku or board cultures. I know not all of DJT was like that, I know there are some of you right now frustrated by not having a place they belong to anymore, but is intruding /jp/ really the solution? I wonder. I believe DJT as we knew it being gone can be a chance, whether at a personal level but also for DJT itself as a community to change and become something new. Trying so hard to salvage it by sticking it like a tumor to whatever board feels "right enough to us" is just desperate as well as incredibly self-centered.

It's not even been 2 days, so who knows what this newly made general will look like in the near future when things have calmed down though. The idea of having both a DJT over /int/ as a garbage dump and a proper one here might be a good long term solution, maybe.

I feel bad that this is how it seems. I never wanted to bother anyone, I just wanted to learn Japanese with people who have the same goals, goals which are very different than most people's. I am the same way in that djt really helped me learn when I was completely lost. It saved me.

I might have to give up on it though. /jp/ does already have a raw VN and /a/ is starting to get raw manga threads now. djt was nice how you could talk about everything though.

I like this manga, but there are a few that I don't really get and the Kansai-ben(?) makes it a little harder to grasp. I just say 'oh well' and go to the next one if that happens though. Yeah. In manga sometimes you need to think twice about how sentences are structured. Since they don't have much space they sometimes omit virgules and such, so you have to sort of "voice act" the characters and get a feel on how the sentences would be pronounced... if you follow me?

I also thought for a second she was talking about the glasses shop, but managed to understand it was actualy "ie ni" - and I guessed the joke of this strip was just she thinks she forgot her glasses, but they are on her face. Since she's quite boke, it fit.

I'm reading it without sweating too much if I don't get a joke - I used to read Cyanide & Happiness comics back in 2007 and not understand half of their jokes because my English was shit. Still was able to enjoy the ones I could.

I gotta say - Heisei Umare is quite the uninspired yonkoma, but it is also quite simple, so I am able to follow along a good portion of it and have some fun.

Are there VNs not based on romance or fucking someone? The ones I see the jay posting about are mostly about sniffing someone's buttocks, and even some "investigation" ones like Steins;Gate or Higurashi seem to revolve around choosing the best girl's route.

crossboarding is theoretically a good thing

the only reason crossboarders are annoying is that they literally don't give a shit about where they are

crossboarders from non-/a/ boards to /a/ DJT are the reason it was perpetually off-topic (note that I'm counting being off-topic for DJT, not being off-topic for /a/)

likewise, crossboarders from /x/ and a couple other boards started polluting touhou tulpa threads here for a while, making them very delusional instead of just autism coping spaces, before they got banned. but i don't think many people noticed that happen.

crossboarders are ok as long as they lurk moar and don't make the board go off-topic (like /int/ turning into /pol/-lite), but that pretty much always happens when too big a group of people go across boards.

aside from that, crossboarding *should* make the boards correspond to "forum topics", making an entire board a general grouping of conversations on a given topic, with threads going in and out on that one topic just like conversations in megathreads on a bbs. but that's not how crossboarding actually works on 4chan for some reason.

If Japanese learners want to have a thread to discuss VNs (or LNs, or even, "/jp/-related media"), I'm not against that, even if some other posters might be. But then it would be strongly preferable if the thread would be rebranded away from "DJT."

Been wanting to ask this for a while now: I just graduated college this year and as a graduation gift to myself am planning on going to Japan for a month next year for fun.

I've been planning the trip for a long time now and am going to be going from Tokyo --> Kyoto --> Osaka --> Hiroshima -->Kanazawa etc (Places between the lines in the posted picture) for the duration of the 30 days in May 2017.

So my question to the DJT I wanted to ask is what should I prioritize learning language wise in the next 4 months before I go? So far I've just been practicing saying/ listening to numbers since I figure it will be handy when buying stuff but if anyone has a reccomendation for important phrases or words to learn I would love to hear it.

Thank you in advance to anyone who took the time to read!

Passive listening can only help you with a bit of reviewing, the gains are pretty shit.

If you're actively listening and trying to understand, it will be very useful as a review method, reinforcing your vocabulary and habituate you to grammar structures.

But it will hardly teach you anything new - therefore, if you're having a bad time understanding stuff, it is probably because you don't know enough to understand it yet.

Evaluate whether you know the content and it's just too fast for you (case in which watching more stuff will help) or if you actually don't know what is being said (case in which you should study more).

I can relate a lot to that - "compelling content" has always been a bad methodology for me because I want to understand everything from stuff I care about.

That's why I've been watching some Doramas on viki.com (you can filter for episodes that have Japanese subtitles). They are shitty teenager soap operas, but that makes me open about not understanding whole sentences sometimes.

Another option would be rewatching anime you've already seen, but I would probably want to understand everything again if it's a show worth rewatching.
