I've seen this posted everywhere so some you must already know about this, but I've never seen this being discussed around here so here we go.

Someone recorded ZUN's MIDIs on the Roland SC-88Pro, the synth he composed them for https://www.shrinemaiden.org/forum/index.php/topic,18989.0.html

What are /jp/'s favorites? I didn't have the chance to listen to all of them yet, but here's some of mine so far:

>Crimson Tower ~ Eastern Dream... (THE original)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WPy3Io3RnE

>the Last Judgement

>(THE original)
Here's something that seems to be flying over people's heads, in eosd the midis on the sc88pro are the originals, the wavs were arranged and recorded with another midi synth. So that thread is kind of a big deal.

I personally prefer the original midi versions over the wav arranges zun made, at least as far as eosd is concerned.

I have to agree with this. I've been playing EoSD with the MIDI soundtrack recently, a lot of the tracks fit the mood better than WAV. Only issue is that the loop times are off with the files linked in the thread, and I don't know of any way to set custom loop points for EoSD.

He may have composed them to begin with using the SC88 for EoSD but it's pretty clear that he exercises a lot more control over the sound in the wav versions, particularly with the trumpets. Chinese Tea is very choppy with this midi version and overall they're somewhat muddy. I do like the wiggle in the piano of Voile and the pan flute in Apparitions compared to the marimba of the wav; they're overall quite nice. But I think it's pretty safe to say that the wav versions comprise his final vision for EoSD.

These are kinda quiet since they're not mastered.
You have to increase the volume or else quieter notes and instruments become lost in the mix.
It also helps the instruments become a bit less glued.

>> No.15948033

>>15947435
That specific version is exclusive to to Akyu's Vol.5. It was added because HRtP only has a few tracks, so ZUN composed that as a bonus.
The main melody is a reference to the ZUN Soft jingle that plays when you run LLS or MS.

The Seihou Shuusou Gyoku extra stage also has a slowed down version of that jingle (during the first few bars) as a reference
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQHEvt7AtjQ

Then ZUN took that slowed down version and arranged it a bit for the EoSD title screen theme

A bit offtopic but I never understood why people like OPL. Is it all nostalgia? I'm a big fan of FM but OPL just sounds like a bunch of farts to me. No punch, no meat, the sounds just go prrrff.

It actually pisses me off a little when someone says that the music from Doom and Duke Nukem 3D sound better on OPL than the proper SC-55 recordings.

Pretty much. A lot of us grew up with shitty Sound Blaster 16s and got used to that crappy 2op FM sound. There does exist a much-better sounding 4op set for OPL, but the polyphony is cut in half so it only sounds good with music composed with that in mind.

I love ZUN as an artist. Everything he made, everything that popped out of his head, the idea of creating this wonderful fictional thing we call Touhou, with many stories... and music. After all, the music is meant to go along with the characters, and he made them for a reason.

Yes, ZUN does excellent art. I'd wish I could have his vision.

...I hate when people divide these 2 things. Drawings are just drawings, music is just music, etc; but if we're talking about "art", we're talking about the whole thing in general, as it should be...

>>15973586
Some of it is nostalgia, but it's got a very characteristic sound to it.

kind of wish it wasn't so fucking thin and reedy, you really need to layer channels to thicken it up properly, and you could only really get big, bold sounds without burning through a third of the available channels on the OPL2 (and by the time the OPL3 was really, really common, you'd just use sampled or streamed audio in games)

man, now I'm reminded that I need to work on my OPL3 tracker (was making a 9-track tracker, which paired two 2-op channels together for richer phased and stacked sounds)

>you could only really get big, bold sounds without burning through a third of the available channels on the OPL2
meant to say OPL3 there

(you get 9 voices on OPL2 vs 18 voices on OPL3 -- you could reasonably stack three FM channels into a stacked 6-op "1*2+3*4+5*6" channel on the OPL3 and get 6 resulting channels, or four if you stack four channels and use the remaining two for drums or whatever, on OPL2, you can barely scrape by with pairing two voices together into four 4-op "1*2+3*4" channels, and use the last channel for really shitty drums, and most games would rather have the high polyphony instead of good music, blah)

Soundfonts are just "take these samples and play the right one associated with the note and instrument". You aren't going to be able to emulate a hardware synth with something that simple.

You have to be either trolling or playing dumb.
ZUN has stated multiple times in the past that he just wants to make old-fashioned video game music, and that he doesn't give two shits about realism.

That should be fucking obvious from just listening to his music.
Money has not been an issue to him for a long time. He earns more than even the best paid japanese programmers. He has a 2000 USD+ tablet, at least 3 high end monitors, a fuckton of consoles, games and books and a big house.
He could easily replace all of the sounds from his 15 year old MIDI module with super realistic sample libraries, but he doesn't want to.
