Start with the 6th game and go from there. Do not bother with the PC-98 games until you are used to shoot-em-ups. They are much harder than the Windows releases because they do not have the same mechanics as the later games, there is no focused shot in the PC-98 games.

Also, he forgot to mention it, but the first touhou is not a danmaku shooter, but rather it is essentially a breakout clone. It isn't bad, but it is vastly different. As well, the games that are X.Y such as 9.5 "shoot the bullet" are not regular danmaku games. Some are even fighting games. Great Fairy Wars is a danmaku game with the gimmick that you can freeze bullets, which effectively removes them. Shoot the bullet and Double Spoiler have you take photos of patterns to capture them. It is essentially about taking the best shot of a pattern and is recommenced for experts due to how unusual it is. Impossible spell card is essentially you "cheating" in danmaku by using items to beat absurdly difficult patterns, though apparently all of them can be done without "cheating". As for the fighting games, each of them has their own little unique gimmick, but essentially, all the ones pre-Hopless Masquerade are similar to more traditional fighters where as the latter ones try to emulate aspects of danmaku. This translates into players "flying" which means you are in the middle of the screen and can go up or down, as well, it has a greater focus on ranged attacks then normal fighters (though melee is still possible) and it also a different super move system.
