Finished my first Island route. (Sara)

I quite enjoyed how the whole thing can be a somewhat typical science fiction story, but also just about two kinda crazy people who may need some professional help. This kinda made it special.

That said, some minor issues exist. First, other characters but Sara barely appeared. This was mostly bad with Karen, who is by the way quite the bro. They kinda started some plot between her and Sara... and then that was forgotten. Should've really closed that story part.
Bad-ending branching can also be a bit weird. Like choosing one or the other changing the information you get, even though your choice shouldn't be able to influence that. That was unnecessary. Especially because most choices are so nice, as they reflect what the whole thing is about.

Barring aside a really anticlimatic last battle, despite the guy having some pretty great combos, Mao's route was pretty great, delved a lot into the actual plot of the game and makes me excited for the next couple of routes. Also liked how there was actual relationship development in the route unlike in Tsukuyomi's, I didn't even know i was in her route until they started fucking.
I also like how the game uses Sky's assemblers and how something that was the basis for the true end using assemblers to create bodies for electronic ones feels so wrong in it because of the implications.

I can sit back and enjoy what I'm reading without feeling any stress whatsoever from the reading itself, as long as the VN isn't too bad. One thing I've noticed over the last years is that people frequently have subtly different opinions than I do, and I get asked frequently how I can play so many moege/charage. The answer is relatively simple... I read about 20 times faster than most of the rest of you - with the exception of a few bibliophiles. What is a true chore, taking up tens of hours for you, might very well only be a short eight to ten hours for me. Reading that fast - whether in English or Japanese - gives me a greatly different perspective than a lot of the others here.

My stamina for reading in general and reading VNs in particular is far higher than the rest of you. Fundamentally, the idea of breaking a VN up over the course of weeks or months is alien to me, since even the longest ones will only take me about thirty hours (even in a busy week, I can usually manage to squeeze that in during breaks and meals).

One of the reasons people tend to get tired of VNs is a lack of stimulation due to low reading speed. I read fast enough that a good VN's stimulation will be close to constant, whereas a slow reader will sometimes come to feel 'in-between' scenes that are meant to be short and informative as painful and long. I burnout less often than you. For me, burnout is a process that takes months. There is another type of burnout that I experience when I play a truly great VN... but this is something that is almost like that feeling you get after a night of good sex, so it is closer to 'pleasurable exhaustion'.

It's like with eating. You can devour your food fast, but you won't really know how good it was. So ultimately you aren't doing yourself a favor. Especially with this medium, where part of the experience is voice acting. It's one way, but that's all there is to it.

Sure, you can probably stomach more works than others, but you won't really be able to enjoy certain special works as much as others can either. It's really a double edged sword. So it's a choice: Search for works that are great while dropping crap, or devouring everything you start with everything turning into one grey mesh of mediocrity.

You could always try and mix this, but that's hard. If you search for good works, you aren't satisfied with just rushing through something without it ever being special so it wouldn't change anything. Likewise if you always rush, you won't be able to just sit down and read something slower to savior it and its atmosphere and listen to the voice-acting as you get always tempted to fall into your usual rut. That's how people tend to be.
So yeah, pick your poison.

Is anyone else feeling burnout form the sheer length of all these VNs? I like reading books, and so I have a history of picking up books and finishing them that day, feeling fulfilled. But VNs on average are thrice to four times the size of a book and contain less information density to boot, with most of the excessive size coming from what I determine to be fluff narration and dialogue meant for immersion. While I can appreciate that, I'm really starting to feel worn down. I see a VN I'm interested in but then I see, like, 30時間, 40時間 on EGS and my motivation just drains immediately. Any thoughts or other experiences on this? I'm tempted to just start reading plain Japanese novels/lns instead. I love VNs but the time investment for every single title is killing me.

>> No.15769324

>>15769310
While VNs are technically longer a lot of the length is padding and fluff as you said, so it's easier to read. 1 hour of reading a VN is like 20 minutes of reading a book for me, "stamina" wise.

Sounds like less of a length issue but more of a general burn out from VNs to me. If you're enjoying the thing you're reading length isn't really an issue (or rather the opposite, you don't want it to end). Just drop stuff when you start to dread reading it, no obligation to commit to all those hours.

The problem with me, I think, is that I usually get invested into a VN, but by the 10th or 20th hour of reading I've grown tired of the setting or characters or some other crucial element of the story. You're right that if I'm enjoying myself then I don't take issue with length, the problem is just that from everything I've read, rarely do the characters or setting justify the length or carry the game through it. There's a lot of games I've dropped after 10-20 hours that would have been some of my favourites if they hadn't just kept dragging it out. I don't think it's a problem with burning out on VNs, really. Because I love a lot of the VNs I read. I just can't see them all to the end out of exhaustion with the enormous lengths.

Finished Baldr Heart, or at least what I think is the good end of true route and I don't feel like getting the bad ends.

Game:
Gameplay wise it's a straight improvement to Sky; there's more enemies and a larger variety of them at once, weapon unlock system is less restrictive (instead of strict tree you only need to use one weapon in the class corresponding to a Fei to unlock more weapons in the same class and unlock other classes, meaning less time spent grinding with shitty weapons you don't like using) and the new Fei action command mapped to a new key enables one extra move that's usable more than once in a combo, ranging from joke shit to a very useful dodge cancel to heat consuming finishers.

On the other hand the game also suffers from same issues as Sky; battles against groups of medium sized or elite mobs are always harder than any proper boss fight, which is even worse due to how many enemies there will be at once. Last boss was more difficult than Sky's though. I played through the game on Hard and I don't know how I would have ever survived if not exclusively using air combos in order to not get constantly interrupted, and even then I was often having a hard time since many late game enemies have anti-air or flying capabilities. There were also few, probably not properly playtested battles where literally every single enemy on the screen has constant knockback, combo interrupting abilities which caused some genuine rage and made me lower to Very Easy for one battle in the true route.

Story:
Story wise I didn't get as much into Heart. There were some good moments, but in my opinion too much time was spent repeating same shit already revealed and explained in other routes and the last route in particular felt like it had some pacing issues, with more and more silly stuff, flashbacks and twists coming up all the time and characters constantly alluding that NOW THIS is the final battle. It feels like everything notable is packed very tight towards the end. The one new emotional BGM used in the last route doesn't have that much impact when it's used for how many god damn times. Last moments in particular had me often screaming for the game to finally end. The game also felt like it missed Sky's variety, since unlike Sky with various politically and morally grey factions in Heart you spend almost exclusively exploring the setting from one good guys' camp in a (relatively) straight cut 1 faction vs. 1 faction scenario.

I didn't really get into the characters either and some of them felt like copies of old ones as if they were going through a checklist, like Naoto being a Gilbert replacement, Wilhelm being the new badass dad leading a PMC, General is a less interesting Isao, and the last route's (both Sky and Heart spoilers) Nagi felt somewhat like Sora with the samey surprise childhood link revealed near the end, or Yuudai being the "nice guy who is totally not secretly evil wink wink" like Sky's professor, but without a proper motivation other than being a completely irredeemable pervert. Heroines were forgettable and romance pretty abrupt. The main antagonists were also really silly, unlikeable and melodramatic despite how hard the game tried to make you feel sorry for Misaki.

Despite all this rant, overall it's not a bad ride. Apart from the last route's pacing issues the story is serviceable enough (if somewhat repetitive but this was also an issue with Sky), battle BGM is mostly good and if you liked Sky's gameplay you'll probably love this one too. Just don't go in expecting too many mind blowing main twists as the game "foreshadows" so much shit it might as well have spoiled them before their actual reveals (also an issue Sky had), though admittedly there was also a few good ones that I didn't see coming.

Well, the MC had to come from somewhere the very first time, so I believe the legend was true in that regard. Like, the first go he was her actual onii-chan and as he went freezing himself on his incestuous journey further Rinnes already had extra brothers.

Now I wonder if all of the endings where he settled with other girls/died broke the cycle forever or siscon gene is so strong the cycle started again in the next 20000 years anyway.

But that's just your arbitrary opinion, it's never actually stated in the game.

I liked the idea of the Onii-chan Setsunas being red herrings, there to distract you from the true storyline. Like, the scene at the end of Rinne's first route where you go to the island believing the other Setsuna is you was one of the best parts of the VN, and if it turned out that was actually you it would ruin the impact. I know they're different timeline Onii-chans but it's clearly essentially the same character reborn.

I mean, I know there's a balance. If they spoke English, the Japanese readers wouldn't understand what was going on. But a big part of Bethly's character is the language barrier. So some consistency would be nice.

Nope. It has こもれび and かげろう as unvoiced, spriteless side stories unlocked after clearing the main game though. There's a few odd parts where the story branches to canon and non-canon lines with the latter obviously not netting you the next chapter. The flags for the 3 final endings are also harder to find, or if you played normally you wouldn't probably even know that there are two more endings. The non-canon lines in most chapters are optional IIRC, but I'd suggest playing through them first if you want to play them at all. Use this walkthrough as it lists the routes in proper order.

I can see why they decided against including Aqua After in the remake, but it's still a real shame. Without it the main game's stinger ending would be pretty infuriating.

Her sentences are simplistic and her pronunciation slow. In middle school, it was moe because a lot of emphasis was put on how she just didn't understand Japanese, either speaking or being spoken to, so it played into a language barrier theme... but by high school, she fluently understands and speaks (generally), so still being stiff and simplistic is just uncomfortable with no language barrier theme.

I like the end though, make sense of a lot of things but is sequel bait. Kunosato is bound to show up again in the series but Takuru's story is over. He got a pretty bad end compared to the rest of the protagonists in the series. No romance, and a parting end from everyone.

>What were the remaining big questions?
Main game ended with the after credits stinger of Cosmos (who was a spriteless side character throughout the game) declaring she and Himawari (Youichi and Asuka's child) will become mankind's enemy, right? Aqua After explains the reasoning behind it, though the side stories did also touch upon the virus' origins and the keyword about Luna Virus also hinted that there may be an "original memory" the virus is holding, and かげろう mentioned that original memory may not be very pleasant due to being stuck on the Moon for god knows how long.

Aqua After also explains how Daigo was so sure about Akari being alive, as Cosmos told him she "saw" Akari and knew about the A to A ring (in the memories she received from the virus). It also explains why Daigo lost his memory at the end of Aqua's Episode (the virus), plus it also properly fleshes out the different ways the virus affects its victims. If you got all the bad ends in the main game and thus unlocked the extra happy end for Aries (the one where she turns into Aoi, but the extra bit reveals she was just pretending and was actually as much of a "failure" as Aqua and she didn't actually get her memories or personality overwritten), it also gets sort of explained as there's only one way the virus starts overwriting memories, which was the case with both Cosmos and Aoi, since Cosmos was born from infected Momiji and Aoi born from infected Akari.

If you want a tl;dr of Aqua After's plot
Cosmos secretly NTRs Youichi form Aqua and wipes the memories of it happening. Aqua gets pregnant, but the virus also infects their baby. Towards the end Aries and Akira realize Aqua and her baby are infected by the Luna virus, and destroying the virus would also kill the baby. Aqua realizes how Youichi and her got infected through seeing Cosmos' dreams, and first attempts to kill Cosmos with the cure (since Cosmos was also infected through the 4th way). In the end Aqua realizes she has no right to kill Cosmos, sticks the cure in her own pregnant stomach, aborting her own baby. Game ends with Aqua and Cosmos both knowing the truth and the implication that mankind may be very fucked in the future, though Aqua and Cosmos themselves make up with each other.

Finished baldr heart.

The final fight is great.
The hug insta KO is pretty fucking brutal.

Got really lucky and did the クライマックスフィンガー (fire punch girl spec) in fire which made my cool-down bar max (3 bars) and I released it almost perfectly which dealt bonus 3000 damage.

I completed the game pretty much 100% with on-ground combat on hard. You don't really have to make complex combos to deal with enemies. I could still pull 1000+ damage combos without thinking too much about what button I'm pressing. It's nice to have one ability to get the flying ones down ready though (I used whip).

Do yourself a favor and play all boss battles on at least hard though. You won't get much satisfaction completing them on normal since they have A LOT less HP on it.

Scenario wise, I think it handled repetition a bit better than Sky. Overall improvement in writing too. It's the same story telling style like in the previous games though (trying to make you feel sorry for someone, predictable cliche twists,...) so if you didn't like it in sky you won't like it any better now.

By the way, I just got an update pushed when running the game so if you're still playing you might want to do that.

Also, does anyone know how to use the battle skip option? I don't see it anywhere.

It's actually quite common amongst salarymen in Japan. Even teachers will be transferred to the other side of a prefecture and live in school/government housing for the week and only go home to their wives on weekends, etc.

It's less common internationally, but it does happen, especially with people coming to Japan. I had a buddy that was an engineer that came over for a year assignment with a big company and brought his wife and two elementary school-aged children. It's probably not something that works for everyone, but it's like this. For me, social anxiety was predicated on some childhood trauma that ingrained some ideas into me: That I was bad, that others didn't like me, and that I was constantly being judged. Sometime ago I watched Evangelion, and a quote from the ending goes something like, "If you can't love yourself, you can't put your trust in other". I thought that was interesting. It's natural to assume people won't like you, if you don't like yourself. So, as a rule, I tried always loving myself. And, surprisingly, that helped with social anxiety, because I wasn't always thinking "Man I fucked up just now, man I suck, man everyone must hate me for being a loser". I was able to trust that other people weren't always trashing me. So, rule one I've adopted, is to always love myself.

As for loving others, that was a response to being a pretentious edge lord. It's easy for someone of above-average intelligence to always ace tests and feel smarter than their peers, and thereby develop a superiority complex. For me, I had to adopt the rule of "always love others", because otherwise I would always condescend and attack others. For example, one joke is that Heaven would just be earth, but everyone always understands your intentions when you mess up. This led to social anxiety because when you attack others, they tend to attack back, so I was constantly getting into fights with other people. By defaulting to the idea that people are good by nature and by trying to love them, my urge to attack and my condescension in general faded, though admittedly I'm still working on it.

So, in situations like this, I'm predisposed to presume the person I'm speaking to isn't lying over something trivial just to fuck with another person. Even with the knowledge trolls do exist, if I operated under the assumption everyone I was talking to is a troll, or even if I constantly doubted wither anyone I ever talked to with a troll, then my second rule would greatly weaken and former bad habits would arise, so I keep operating in such a way I trust other people. Sometimes I get lied to and don't notice it like now, but it's not really a big deal. Manly because of someone states something as a fact, I'll trust that they believe what they're saying, but I won't trust the fact to be true without evidence, so it's not like I'm gullible in that sense.

Anyway, that's that.

Hanahime Absolute. Same devs as Princess Witches and Twinkle Crusaders apart from the main writer.

Not sure what to think of it so far. The battles have been easy even on Hard, and I'm still wondering why they decided to make Ex attacks only selectable before committing to regular attacks as Twinkle Crusaders' on-the-fly Ex attack selection made the game feel a bit more involving and you could do more Ex attacks if you got the meter up during the combo. The new support character / leader system doesn't feel like it has a big impact and I'm constantly selecting the same characters into the main party, f.ex. Ayane due to her having the same block Ex skill as PSS's Lolotte.

The silly pro gamer plot hasn't yet managed to catch my interest and I've yet to laugh once, the start at least is slow. The protagonist in particular seems pretty uninteresting, unlike Pricchi's awesome chuuni or Twinkle Crusaders' cute poor shota. He doesn't even participate in actual fights. Really love the heroine designs, but personality wise I'm not sure how interesting they'll be in the end.

>apart from the main writer
Well damn, that explains a lot.

Same complaints, really. There's absolutely zero stakes to the plot, I honestly have no idea what the point of anything is. Anko's the only one playing for anything other than fun, and that gets pushed to the side as soon as her intro arc is over. It's just a game, there's no sinister plots or even comic rivalries, it's just a bunch of goofy sluts versus a bunch of faggy idol dudes in ludicrous outfits playing Pokemon Go for the hell of it. Not to mention the painfully obviously foreshadowed 'twist' about the 女王 that I called from about 15 minutes in. It hasn't happened yet but the OP movie practically confirmed it.

The nicest thing I can say about the main character is that someone gave him a copy of the script; he spends much less time waffling over stuff like VR lolis appearing out of nowhere than I was afraid he would. On the other hand he treats whatever happened between him and Shiki like a PSTD'd 'Nam veteran who left a buddy behind to die, which is unintentionally hilarious.

It's just, I don't know. There's no point to it. I enjoy moege and don't usually mind that, but this game seems to think it does have a point. Like you said, it isn't even funny either.

But yeah, the girls' designs do things to my dick so I'm compelled to power through. Moe's a hell of a drug.

I will not counter anything else you said, but why does you guys have to be so stupid with this matter. Really, this is is exactly the same problem I see in a lot of comments about Baldr Heart. Where did you get the idea that it is supposed to be a big twist if it was so obvious and why can't you comprehend obvious twists can have a role in execution.

About Hanahime. Seems like Marutani didn't fully write any route as well, but honestly, I'm liking it to the point I'm calling it a Shigeta game even knowing he pretty much isn't there, and that's one of the biggest compliments it can get from me.

If I'd have to guess, they probably wanted 7 "normal" heroines, but that didn't work out at all or something. The cover really doesn't make it seem that two of those girls are sub-heroines.

I think there are plans to fix this somewhat, but alas. More than a h-scene or two are probably not being added. If it's selling well enough, the FD will probably cover that.

Well, 5 main-heroines aren't uncommon. Dunno the length of the game though. They were probably just overambitious.
That said, with the whole issue with one of their voice-actors and crap, this game might've been doomed from the start. In a way, a FD would need to change that and.. yeah.

Just take it at face value. The bad ends in Himawari aren't really important or even good plot wise. They're pretty abrupt and some of them feel like an excuse to just put a bad end there, some of them are outright retarded like Good Bye My Friend ending, what the flying fuck.

I didn't get all the bad ends of ISLAND, but it too also had 未来予想図 ending which didn't make any sort of sense. It seems Goo isn't very good at writing bad endings.

I'm near the end of getting Yuuri's second ending, but I kind of want to finish leveling up my weapons before I go onto Nagi since I want to go in with my best combos.

Also, moonlight slash seems like a stupid good move for opening combos. The base damage jumps up to 400 if you let it spin three times and it starts combos at 120% damage.

But that wasn't the bad ending. That was the good ending. I understand everything about the bad ending I just played. It was when I went back and picked the other choice that I was confused with what Aqua did because it suddenly skipped ahead 2 years. I did really like the Hoshino Akari ending on the moon though. Most of the bad endings in Chapter 1 were at least interesting, but nothing too special. I have to say I like them so far, but obviously I can't say anything about the ones that are presumably in Chapter 3.

>>15788068
You activate once and receive a decryption key. You need that key to even run the game and that's only the first step in defeating the protection.

This DRM is not uncrackable because it's just rebranded Enigma Protector which people have defeated in the past, it's just that mikocon's cracker isn't very skilled and cracking this doesn't just require leeching the game files, you still need to buy the game or know someone who did. And probably there are no skilled crackers both interested in eroge and asking mikocon for their keys, even that guy who pissed off akabeisoft needs the key and he doesn't want to have anything to do with mikocon.

Wow, you guys really weren't kidding. Tsukuyomi's romance goes from 0 to 100 way too fast. Hell, her character was barely there, pretty much every other heroine was more prominent and I almost thought I was on Mao's route at some points. What's up with this? Rain's route definitely wasn't the most exciting of Skys by a long shot, but at least she had the lion's share of screentime and got development in it.
