I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Ran, is in fact, Tail/Ran, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Tail plus Ran. Ran is not a youkai unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Tail system made useful by the Tail corefluff, mom utilities and vital shikigami components comprising a full youkai as defined by ZUN.

Many shikigami users run a modified version of the Tail system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Tail which is widely used today is often called Ran, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Tail system, developed by the Tail Project.

There really is a Ran, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Ran is the old hag: the kitsune in the system that allocates the shikigami's resources to the other spellcards that you run. The old hag is an essential part of a youkai, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete youkai. Ranis normally used in combination with the Tail: the whole system is basically Tail with Ran added, or Tail/Ran. All the so-called Ran shikigami are really shikigami of Tail/Ran!
