Using a webcam, you place those white and black blocks in front of it. The blocks act as 'coordinates' for the program to set up the 3D models on the monitor. The models are displayed on the MONITOR, not in front of you. So basically without the monitor, it looks like you are playing with white and black blocks. Each block has different designs on it, designating different 'things' that happen on screen.

The best way to think about it is the program revolves around the blocks. The one that is stationary is the center of what happens in the program. The one that has the figure on it, I mean. I can only assume that the block that the figure is on, is the 'center' of the 3D plane, and the program just goes where it can from there, estimating the environment changes to give it slight realism.

The model is projected from the blocks, as the other objects are. Best to think of the model itself as just another 'object' that does stuff. The center block is the basis for the model, the 3D plane, and any other object that comes into the field.

OP here. Basically the software uses your webcam to calculate a flat plane and distance based on the markings on the cube. The 3d character is then overlayed on the webcam image based on those calculations. It can't tell if there is anything in way so the illusion can break if you don't keep your desk clear.

The cards and stick also let you interact with the character, either changing her clothes, pausing to take a screenshot or to harass. All of the items are of really cheap construction and it wouldn't be too hard to papercraft the cube, but I wonder how hard it would be to just brute force a key out given they are 28 digit Alphanumeric, favouring letters in the format ####### ####### ####### #######.
