The 9th Saki Cup will be starting later today. Group A lasts from 8/5 ~ 8/13, Group B lasts from 8/14 ~ 8/21, and the final lasts from 8/22 ~ 8/28. 3% of your score from each qualifying group will carry over to the finals.

http://pl.sega-mj.com/official_view/page?news_id=2829
You can earn a Saki SP Chara or Nodoka SP Chara (with unique voices) this time. 20 Tonpussen games in Group A will get you Saki, while 20 3-Player games in Group B will get you Nodoka. Either way, you'll get the SP Chara item after scheduled maintenance on the 23rd.

http://pl.sega-mj.com/official_view/page?news_id=2828
Various seiyuus from the series will be playing (supposedly) during the event. If you manage to play against them, and exceed their placement, you'll get special backgrounds and borders of Saki characters. They will be delivered on the 23rd for Group A & B, and the 30th for the final. I wouldn't get my hopes up if you run into Kana Ueda. There's a reason she was chosen to voice a mahjong demon.

Finally, this hasn't been posted yet but I'll go ahead and assume they'll be doing another round of Saki SP Chara gachas. Since the Mukoubuchi gacha ends on the 9th, and there's also a maintenance that day, that would be my guess when.

Internal tiles are great for building hands. Keep them when you can. When you dumped the 5 sou, you picked up a 6 sou (if you have a 5 you will end up with a wait if you draw any of 34567). Read up on tile efficiency in the "further reading" from the OP pastebin.

Especially early, assume you are going for pin fu or tanyao unless you have an obvious reason not to (like a couple yakupai pairs, a bunch of one suit for hon/chin itsu, or lots of pairs to turn into a toitoi or chitoitsu).

You have to consider speed vs points.

Your hand is already decent enough. I would kept the 7m pair to call pon on either 7m or 6s for a quick tenpai.

>> No.15647380

Considering how far ahead you were and it's south 3, I'd have discarded the 45p for speed. There's nothing to gain from winning bigger.

>> No.15648113

>>15634851
The best choice is 4m. You only lose the 3m ukeire, you keep the 7m6s shanpon, and kamicha most likely wouldn't hang onto 36p if he drew them. It's also worth keeping the 45p ryanmen so shimocha doesn't get to call on the akadora, and 4p is your safest tile.

>> No.15649009

>>15648823
Everything, no offense. I won't do a round-by-round analysis (someone else will probably come along and do one), but these are my overall observations from a quick skim through.

Your tile efficiency needs a lot of work - you keep yakuhai longer than you should, you ignore tenpai, you break tenpai for no apparent reason, and it looks like you open your hand without much of a plan. In terms of defense, you defend when you shouldn't and don't defend when you should, or maybe you're trying to defend but I just can't tell. A lot of the time I had no idea what you were doing. My guess is that you were chasing yaku since it seemed like you had a boner for ittsuu and honitsu.

Some tips - if you don't know all the yaku, learn them, especially tanyao and pinfu. If your starting hand has isolated yakuhai but you don't need them, discard them early. Don't open up your hand unless you know what yaku you're going for. If the dealer declares riichi or someone has a dora pon, just betaori immediately, but if you're in dead last, be more aggressive.

Defense is nice and dandy. BUT, you still need to win a hand or two. Otherwise, you put yourself in a position, where a single fuck up (which happened) ends up spelling your doom.

After stupidly dealing into lots of large hands, I've noticed that it happened more on half-completed pairs that I kept from the beginning and dump later on in the game than freshly drawn tiles.

A trash tile you've kept might be the exact one they need, and keeping it can deny them victory.

I find it that the hardest tiles to get for a kokushi are the honors since they are the ones that are discarded quickly at the beginning. He only needed the pei to have all honors.
The 9s is dora but he already has one, so that's not an issue. So all that's left after that are the 1-9m and the 9p, as well as a pair of any, which should be easy to get. Really, getting the pei was probably the only hurdle.

I want to check, though. >>15731045 Got a link to the replay?

If gyakuten'd all the time, don't go full defensive when you're in the lead. If you're close to tenpai with a good wait you should still be pushing. Riichi is first is looked down on, but if the other players are very close on points, they'll still often bail to avoid last.

If you can't gyakuten, just be more aggressive early. East is the time to push hard. There's a variety of reason why you might not often be in first without looking at your games.

It's probably not a mahjong question so much as a japanese language question, but what's with dual names for numbers, like ni or ryan. Is it like a possessive, like "the number Two" or "Two of something"?

>> No.15738002

>>15737742
Japanese has specific words to count certain objects, in English we refer to these as "counters."

There's counter categories for a lot of shit (long & round objects, small animals, heavy machinery and much more, it's rather tedious to learn them all), and Mahjong tiles have their own specific counters which goes from 1-9 as follows

Ii, Ryan, San, Suu, Uu, Rou (less commonly Ryuu), Chii, Paa, Chuu (sometimes Kyuu).

People would probably understand what you're saying if you're a foreigner and said "Ni-sou" or whatever (especially if the conversation is in the context of Mahjong), but it's generally better to use the counter if you know it.

No.
I don't know what the reason for not using Japanese words is, but ii, ryan etc are Chinese numbers (very close to the actual pronunciations in Chinese as well unlike most onyomi). They're not counters, 2 Man is written 二萬.

>> No.15738560

>>15738002
That's not how counters work. Counters are only suffixes that you put after the number to specify what kind of thing you are couting. The numbers before them stay the same (modulo some slight pronunciation changes sometimes).

Unless you're dealing with the generic counter つ which fucks everything up for some reason.
