I'm not a braindead cunt who feels like wasting thousands of dollars on a completely ephemeral experience?

I really don't understand why you'd go to Japan. Maybe if you wanted to fill your suitcases with doujinshi or old JP only hardware, I guess. But even then, you could probably just have everything you want shipped home for cheaper than the tickets, room and board by stalking YJA for a month.

You can spend an hour looking through holiday snaps online if you want to see some old shrines and trees.

I feel like holidays are something that people do just because everyone else does. I've never once understood the point, maybe if you're going backpacking through India or something and getting stabbed to death in the street, then you might take something away from the experience. But a first world country where you just pay for things and look at things? Why? If you need a break from work, you can just have a "holiday" at home.

Travel is for escaping the prison that is your own life. It's usually one you mentally constructed yourself, but it's still there.

All the holidays I have spent at home were mostly pissed away on 4chan. If I went onto a holiday in Japan I might actually get out there and see new things.

That is a good point. I don't know what makes it so special. Its like going to a live concert when you can just sit in a basement by yourself listening to the same album everyday in the dark.
But going there for a month can give just enough time to really soak in the diffrence between America and basicly anywhere else but Canada.
Plus it sounds good in any situation to say you lived in another country for a month. Bonus points for work or charity or something.

>>15530437
I think people who do things to beef up their CV are tremendously boring. Living in a first world country for a month while spending 10 times more than everyone around you? Do you need a medal for that or something, like you braved the unknowns of a tourist trap? I was mostly speaking in terms of a mental prison; trapped by routines and complexes and thought patterns you built for yourself and never mustered the willpower to change. Though I suppose it would have been much more appropriate to use "my" than "your."

Change is heavier than a mountain, routine is as light as a feather.

In that case I would say get both a Suica and a JR Pass for the minimum amount of time that will cover the travel by Shinkansen.

The first time I came to Japan with a friend we both got JR Passes to cover the three weeks we were here, we started in Osaka, went to Kyoto, Hiroshima and Tokyo, that was three trips on the Shinkansen and then we used JR lines for practically everything and I still don't think we covered the cost of the JR pass.

The second time we bought a one (or was it two?) week pass and activated it in Kyoto and went from there to Beppu, Hakata, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Kagaguchiko and Tokyo and definitely got more than our money's worth.

Some hotels don't have wifi and one's that do often have worse speeds on it because it gets hammered more. If the hotel has an ethernet jack in your room then it is usually better.

Suica is an IC card, you charge it at JR stations through machines they have there and you can pay for trains, most buses and items at vending machines and some stores by just tapping it on the IC readers.

It makes train usage a lot quicker as you don't have to buy tickets and it works on pretty much all city lines (country lines not so much, often they still require you to purchase tickets).

A JR pass is something you redeem and activate when you arrive in Japan and gives you free travel on the JR lines, JR bus services and a few other JR services as much as you want for the period of the pass. You can also use it to book free reserved seats on a range of Shinkansen and other Limited Express services run by JR BUT you are limited to JR with it.
When using it at stations you have to go past the window next to the gates and show it to the station staff and show it when booking tickets on the Shinkansen and Limited Express services.

Currently planning a 3 week trip in April next year. Planning to climb Mt Takao, possibly try Mt Fuji depending on the conditions. Going to be visiting a lot of the war/navy museums in Tokyo and Yokosuka, along with the Saitama and Kyoto rail museums.

I have some questions though. I had wanted to spend some time up north, in Nikko, Sendai, Hiraizumi, and Hirosaki/Oirase. I've seen conflicting information as to whether or not hiking is a good idea up there in April, and I'm thinking I'd be better off skipping it and spending more time at the major cities. Does anybody live or take trips up there that can give advice?

I've lived in Sendai and Hiraizumi, and visited Hirosaki, as a matter of fact.

There's not much sightseeing to do in Sendai, but it's a very nice town to live. If you wanna go hiking, Mt. Zao is fairly close, and can be reached by bus. There's also Matsushima, which is gorgeous, but no hiking afaik.

While you're in Sendai, you can catch a bus to Hiraizumi (or nearby Ichinoseki and catch a train), which takes roughly 90 minutes. Usually leaves in front of the Sakurano department store.

I'd recommend going to Hiraizumi at least for the day, so you can see Chuusonji and Moutsuji. Wanko-soba is an Iwate specialty, and is worth trying.

I don't know if hiking is possible in April in Aomori (I went in summer for Neputa). I was lucky enough to be with a friend who had a car when I visited, so I don't know how easy it is to get by with public transport.

Personally, I would suggest spending a little more time in/near Tokyo. You can get to Mt. Tsukuba (Ibaraki) or Mt. Haruna (Gunma), or the mountains of Okutama which are a bit closer.

Hope some of that helps answer your questions!

Travel seems more trouble than its worth. There's so many logistical needs you need to take care of.... finding places to get food, being on time for public transportation, finding somewhere to stay, getting internet and having a working phone, getting cash in the local currency. All in a place you aren't familiar with. Ugh.

Add on top of that adjusting to the local timezone and it becomes a pretty stressful experience, IMO. I spend a lot of trips hungry, tired and in a bad mood. You can mitigate these problems with good planning if you're experienced, but if you're not you end up learning how to travel smart by making mistakes. Which is no fun.

Isn't it better to have holidays be relaxing breaks from the stress of every day life? Pretty much everything good about Japan we can get a distance in a mediated, controlled, convenient fashion, anyways.

There have been huge spreads of Chinese throughout different parts of the world, so much so that one in SEA and one in China with 5-6 generations of cultural changes don't really have the same mindset on things anymore. It's like saying all of mainland Chinese are terrible tourists, which is incredibly biased. A LARGE proportion of the middle class population (who're mostly the ones contributing to travel) have said mindset with terrible attitudes, and they're mostly the previous generations rather than the current one.
In short, mainland Chinese who are 20-30 years of age, the younger generation, would most likely be better tourists

I wouldn't recommend going there if you can't speak it. It was shit and my money was stolen and even before that I got ripped of on everything I bought even though I could see the price but they kept insisting it was a higher price until I paid because I didn't want to go put everything I had back.

Me and the gf, yes I know, fucking normie, REEE, etc... are going to be going early November/late October.

We aren't too focussed on weeb stuff, maybe a few days in Tokyo for shibuya, akihabara and the imperial palace.

So far we are going to be staying at a flash ryokan for a night, going to a bunch of mountain onsen since the autumn foliage is supposed to be awesome, some hikes, traditional gardens and maybe the nuke museum too. What would you guys recommend? Kyoto and Nara are definitely on the list too.

We want to go there to see the country, meet the people and experience the culture. My weeb speak is passable for getting around as well.

Generally everyone overrates themselves. Chances are you'd shit yourself the moment some Japanese person would speak at you in Japanese. And if you mean get around as in orientation by signs, that's pointless, every sign is in English anyway.

That said, I recommend Hakone. Super easy trip from Tokyo, you'll enjoy nice nature and onsens and on your way back you can stop on Odawara castle.

Also Tokyo Edo Hakubutsukan in Ryogoku is pretty good. It's so insanely detailed, if you take it all in, you become a scholar of life in Edo.

Also desu Shibuya and Akihabara are pointless to visit unless you specifically want to something in them. Especially Shibuya. What's in there for normies like you? The statue of Hachiko and expensive shops? What's in Akihabara for normies? Expensive shops and some posters with anime girls to oogle? Expensive shops are all over Tokyo desu. Not even saying all this to be mean, I geuinely think these two aren't worth visiting simply as tourist destinations. Go to Asakusa instead, for example, it's not even that far from Ryogoku.

Those kind of people don't post on 2hu boards anon.
I'm acquaintances with 3 people who've gone though.

1 guy is math major, presently doing grad school in kyoto. [no moon]

1 guy is a graphic artist / 3d designer, met some jap chick in his degree program, and is now working with a certain game company's japanese branch (they're trying to break into that market). [pretty good at the language, basically self-taught]

1 guy saved up money (from military), cashed in some investments and is paying $10k a year to live in japan on a student visa studying Japanese at one of those language schools for 2 years. he was talking about going to undergrad there too, but how is he going to afford it? not sure what his endgame is -- maybe he's planning to land a cake and marry into permanent residence. he started with just a few months of self-taught moon but he'll be fluent by the end of 2 years i'm sure.

Maybe I'll try looking for internships abroad or something over my summers, but I would have no idea where to start. I wish was blissfully unaware enough to be in a Humanities major with 1/3 the course load.

Amazing how you've just described exactly how I feel about graduating next year. Like I'm going to get some offer for a job that I won't be able to refuse. I'm also doing CpE btw.

I'm doing my best to steer the currents though -- grinding hard to pass JLPT N1 before I graduate so I can get that onto the resume, and looking to apply for companies with japanese divisions, or to grad school opportunities in japan.
