Looking for some Touhou doujins to read especially the darker toned ones. Nothing mushy like a love story but something to read to really make me get into it. Action ones are good too, something like what Imuzu Unknown does. Also trying to find Undonge vs Remila part 1 by the same guy.

A fair amount of my recommendations have already been mentioned, so I'll try to keep things fresh and interesting.

>Johari Garden, by Cosmic
This one explores the (un)happy relationship of the Komeiji sisters. Gets real fuckin' metaphorical, and I really liked that. I particularly liked how the ending was left rather ambigous, but I'm not going to spoil anything.
>Love and Peace, by Shimadoriru
This explores Byakuren's past, and her current relations with humans and youkai. Because, see, she's a youkai nun who's friendly to both youkai and humans alike, which puts her on an interesting situation. Lots and LOTS of grimdark.
>Road of Recollection, by Fuantei
One day, Koishi finds herself in a strange place, where all the doors lead to people's dreams. She finds dreams of many people - One of such people, is her sister. This also explores the two sisters' relationship, and it's not nice once again. It's pretty depressing, at least that's how I felt about it.

I really liked them as well. You have to think of his works as derivative works of Touhou rather than doujinshi based on Touhou though, since the characters and the setting are wildly different than the original, but the characters are done well enough that I could stomach them just fine. His art style is obviously inspired by Tsutomu Nihei's works, and that's not everyone's cup of tea, however I really like that particular artstyle so I dig it. The action scenes were well-drawn as well. The plot was fairly simple but surprisingly interesting, but your mileage may vary.
To sum it up: Action scenes were very nice, so were the characterizations, the plot was breddy gud, art style is a love-it-or-hate-it thing. Ameyama's works are certainly worth a shot, if you ask me.

There's Grief Orb by Carcharias. I wouldn't call it grimdark but I thought I should mention it anyway.
It's a doujin in which a very strong youkai, a literal false sun, appears. It seems like an unwinnable fight - But Seija, true to her nature, decides that that's not the case. The pacing is strange and the ending is rather abrupt, and it's drama but a little wierd sort of drama. You might not enjoy this.

>Futo being Tojiko's foster mother doesn't seem right to me.
While the difference between foster and biological mother is a bit blurry, there are too many parallels pointing to Futo being Futsuhime. Here's a short list:
>Futo's backstory mentions her assisting in the toppling of the Mononobe by allying with the Soga clan
>Sushun-tenno, the emperor instated by the Soga after their victory over the Mononobe at Shigisan, had a wife
>the wife was Futsuhime, "Mononobe no Moriya's younger sister"
>Soga no Umako later had Sushun pre-emptively assassinated for threatening to assassinate him (yeah, it's silly)
>Soga no Umako's last wife was said to be a "younger sister of Mononobe no Moriya"
>one of Umako's daughters was Toziko no Iratsume, later consort to Shotoku Taishi, who succeeded
If Futo is assumed to be Futsuhime, whom we assume the wife of Emperor Shushun then later Soga no Umako, that places her close to both the Soga clan after the Mononobe's defeat, explains why she was spared after Shigisan and married to Shushun-tenno, and also how she may have later (after Shushun's death) been married to Soga no Umako. This in turn would have put her close to Emperor Suiko and Prince Taishi, who served him.

Additionally, it gives Futo more than enough of a motive to take revenge on one of Soga no Umako's daughters - something that is really mysterious and blurry in Touhou itself.

Well yeah, it's just not my preference to see Futo entirely as Futsuhime since I remember Moriya as another little brother and Futsuhime wasn't the one who go around burning temples, and it's not like Tojiko treat her like her mother or old lady in canon.
Also, I thought her grudge came from clan rivalry (and from losing the war but maybe this is baseless claim) so I assume she was never a traitor.

But I agree, there are so much nod to Futsuhime so to depict her as the figure in doujin works is understandable.

Though, if we are to speculate canon it'll be even a harder thing to pull off that conclusion, just like Kanako.

>>Also, I thought her grudge came from clan rivalry (and from losing the war but maybe this is baseless claim) so I assume she was never a traitor.
In Ten Desires' Extra Story it is said that Futo was approached by Miko even before the Mononobe-Soga war. Futo was to execute Miko's plan by allying herself with the Soga clan and converting them to Buddhism, starting the war in the first place. Miko required the Soga to win in order to "keep citizenry pacified" through Buddhism, while working on his shikai behind the scenes.

So yeah. Futo is, unfortunately, a traitor. She betrayed her clan by allying herself with the Soga, potentially betrayed them again at Shigisan to ensure Miko's plan would succeed, and then betrayed Soga no Umako and Toziko no Iratsume by messing up Toziko's shikai.

>> No.15595748

>>15595693
That's true. Maybe what I meant to say is she was not a traitor as much as Futsuhime but still a traitor regardless.
He were probably still loyal to Mononobe at some point but her loyalty to Miko is much greater and choose to abandoned her clan, but that doesn't mean she was comfortable with the Soga back then.

But that's just what I thought. It should be taken with a grain of salt.

>> No.15595804

>>15595748
You got that backwards. Futsuhime was only named as Emperor Shushun's wife and Mononobe no Moriya's younger sister. It's Futo who is described as "pulling strings" behind the scenes in Ten Desires' extra story. If there is a source of treachery here, it's Futo's (fictional) allegiance and actions under Miko. Officially, the Soga just won the decisive battle at Shigisan naturally.
