I have taught Japanese students in both countries and I can tell you there is a huge difference in the psychological growth of a Japanese boy that goes to school here vs. one that grows up in the US.

I have noticed that in both countries the boys that enter Junior highschool are usually well adjusted, considerate, social and happy. However in Japan many leave antisocial, withdrawn and with the "stone-faced" salary-man look. And the line is well drawn now. We have crappy niche fanservice series like Kanokon or Strike Witches for the perverted crowd, so that they don't mess with mainstream kids anime and make us all look bad. None of the popular titles are, in themselves, sexual in any way, a huge step forward from the days of DragonBall and Ranma 1/2. There's a lot of cute, young girls in them, but at least they're not the whole point and there's usually some plot to back everything up. Watching anime has never been a "safer" hobby than it is now.
