I wrote a script for the urchins to move in circles and I can set the amount, the distance between each other and speed. It should make for an interesting obstacle. The skull is just a visual of the center. It's all self contained so I can move the skull object and it'd all follow. Maybe I can use the code for something else too. I also kind of want to make fish circles maybe of barracudas later on. Not sure.

It was because a couple of them were overlapping and fighting for z-level priority. The ones that don't look weird are how they should look (and do once I removed the overlapping ones) Now that they're done this area just needs some nice decoration. I'm hoping to get a demo out in July so people can try it out and let me know what they think.

I've been working on a piece of original content for a while. I've been posting it somewhere else and have gotten a lukewarm response. I hope you enjoy it but if you don't, that's okay too.

In any case, without further ado...

Ota fanzine attempts its 4chan /jp/ debut!

In this issue:
- Touhou vs kancolle continues. This time, we look at music production while updating our weekly pixiv fanart production graphs.
- Translated doujin previews!
- A shocking article! What do the panama papers have to do with Kousaka Honoka?
- A brand new videogame! Read the article for further details, including where to download it and a contest with a great prize on the line!

Get it here:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/ly348kk04jgokyo

Note: Unfortunately, it seems like there were some problems with the bundled videogame. Due to a coding mishap, the mouse mode isn't working properly… As such, only the keyboard mode is playable in this version. Seeing as the contest's winners would be the best scorer in keyboard mode and the best scorer in mouse/touchscreen mode, the rules of the contest must be changed… Now, the big prize will be awarded to the first and second best scorers in the keyboard mode.

I died, killed by a man-eating dog. He barked at me a few times and gave me a heart attack. When I came to, I was lying down a grassy field in the middle of the day. A girl with dog ears was looking at me. "Are you okay?" she asked while tilting her head on one side. Moments passed then she left when I didn't answer. "A girl with dog ears? This must be a different world, I got reincarnated!" I thought. In this new life that was given to me, I will do things right. But not today. I lay there until night came. Then a three headed dog suddenly spawned near me and gave me a heart attack.

You must first understand that your brain can only assemble characters from pieces that you've already seen.

Then you embark on the journey to see as much stuff as you can, not only rare stuff like exotic animals, cultures and places, but also things that form your immediate surrounding. Take notice of the shape of things, their colors, small details, everything. Draw some inspiration from your favorite artists, too.

That's pretty much it.

All I'm saying is that in order to make something that stands out you've got to accumulate a sizable "visual library" in your mind.
Which "parts" to use and how to use them - it's completely up to you.

>> No.15481727

>>15480637
Take inspiration from your life experiences and feelings. If you try to create something original you will fail because what seems original to you is what you do not understand yet. In ignorance you will get it wrong and any originality it seemed to have will disappear because it was false.

When you create something by doing what works best for you from your unique experiences, others will appreciate your work and find it meaningful. And more importantly, you'll enjoy what you create and the mistakes that you make because everything you do drives you foward to your true potential.

For instance, let's say you want to make a game. Forget about who's going to see it and ask yourself, what do you want to create? What world do you want to experience? What characters do you want to meet? Then expand your awareness. What kind of clothes would they really wear in this world? How would other people perceive them? What kind of relationship would they have with people in the town with that personality? Pay attention to how things influence each other and adjust them so they feel right.

When you continue asking questions and thinking about potential outcomes, you'll find the best. And after purging what's unnecessary it becomes beautiful.

Look at a bunch of hairstyles, real and drawn, and draw some you like. Think up what sort of character would have that kind of hairstyle. Make changes to it and go with what kind of clothes they would wear from their personality. Since you're most likely drawing Japanese-esque stuff, it's like 33% hair design, 33% eye shape, 33% hair and face accessories/quirks.

Don't try too hard. Some twintail loli will probably turn out better than a loli with 4 buns, glasses, nosering and bandage on her cheek.

it will be much longer than a one shot, between one and two volumes of a classic manga I guess. A big part of it will be focused on the art , so I'm still at preparing stuffs like the characters design and how I should deal with the whole thing, since I'll need to stay consistent through the pages.

The end goal would include a large scale demon army, lots of fights (human sized melee, magic stuff, and giant sized creatures), detailed gore, lewd, the exploration of a big castle, and some other stuffs.

The whole plot is already defined , but I'm still just working on storyboards. It will play with cliche of generic JRPG settings like DQ1 while still having a proper story along with comedy/dark humor.

Aside from the fact it's a story I want to do that'll force myself a bit to draw stuffs I never really did before.

Nice. I'm not really too much of a fan of futa myself, but I don't mind when artists insert their fetishes and wildest fantasies into their drawings. It's fun to speculate about what/how they think through their art, if that makes any sense.

Never started one cause I'm not sure what story I want to use out of all the ones I've thought of and wrote down. I want to make something I like but I know other people will enjoy(and also something I could show my friends without them thinking I'm weird. They would be happy either way that I made something though). Chances are that I'll make a one shot with a cliffhanger and see how it goes from there. Obviously going to post here because you guys like this type of shit and will make a tumblr later on to post it and my other artwork. I'm a decent artist but I only use pencils cause I'm dirt poor and my parents don't buy me everything like everyone else, so I got a part time job. I could see myself releasing a short 30-ish pages in 5months to a year from now that would be easy to continue if I think that the story has potential and I get some good feedback. All my time is spent working 20-40hours a week and practising every few days whenever I have time. I wonder how good I'll be once I start....

Moray manor. I fixed a few things about them. Basically instead of calculating the distance between the player and itself it calculates the distance between a child object that's in front of its face to determine when to charge. I might tweak it all so it can be like the urchins and I can make some faster and some slower for later levels.

You need the second coin which is at the first offshoot. both of them make a crystal that you can then go into a cave with more morays. It's just a small thing to show the idea that it's something that could be in the game.

I'm glad people aren't getting stuck on the flat rock part. I guess when there's only one 'action' button it's obvious which one will help.

If you experienced any problems let me know. I've been told a few so far, some I'm not even sure how I would even fix. When I release the next demo people will be able to use their controller completely to move the jellyfish around. some people said they like it more than just WASD and it would allow for more precision. Plus gamepads are better for such a game.

I need to find more ways to vary gameplay to keep people interested although the game itself might not be all that long but that would just mean a more action packed game. Kind of like those old rocket knight games if possible.

Ohhh, so you're going for Crash Bandicoot 3's style of underwater stages!
I like it, it's a very fun approach. The only thing that needs tweaking, fun-wise, is how hard it is to hit things, specially when you miss, because you have to steer (slowly) and re-aim. If you look into Crash's spin, it acts as a shortcut for the steering, making you immediately go towards the direction you want. It's a nice way to keep control of what you're doing even if the movement is slow.

- Steering is too slow to control;
- Jump should have a minimum forward momentum, even if pressed without moving;
- It's a bit unclear when my jump cooldown is over;
- Managed to both kill star and be hit by it at the sime time with the afterburn of a jump;
- Idle animation takes a bit too long to start looping, the static pose is a bit jarring;
- Shat my pants with giant lobster on secret route;
- Pushable rock going behind corals looks bad;
- Music is subpar to the game;

If you want some kind of credentials to take a random anon complaining about controls seriously, I did master it well enough to jump over the starting hill (to the left) and circumvent the whole stage (I see your tile stitching! Ha!), reaching an area where the sky becomes swimmable. Too bad I got up the shore and couldn't leave it any longe, since it wasn't bounceable.
And yeah, I still think the steering (or at least a lack of cancel/forceful instant-switch) is a problem.

There could probably be other jumpable mountains around, I tried to follow lobster-sama a bit to no avail.

I will now try to swim up in the sky to see if I can jump over that steep mountain you put after the shore where I got stuck.

>> No.15508851

>>15508453
Yup, was able to do it and turns out I ended up at lobster-sama's part.
Took the coin and exited the secret route, but was able to re-enter since I didn't get in via the actual entrance. Then I wasn't able to quit because I had already "used" the exit once.

I really like how the sound of being hit changes pitch according with how low our health is, reminds me of Yoshi Story's sunflower health bar..

Also the first obstacles that teach us jumping have a weird jagged shape, me no like it.
I managed to get stuck in one of these, by the way, almost restarted the game but some advanced directional alternation got me unstuck. A normal player might not be able to get out.

I'm not sure whether or not the first eel is supposed to be invisible, but it's a sure-hit for a first-time player.

Also the first time I played I took the rock with me until the boss, but replaying I found out it was just meant as a way to go down the bubbles (which I didn't even notice the first time because I was already trying to take the rock with me. It's fun because the crab will suck it to the middle of the screen!

Managed to kill the crab and die at the same time - not exactly a problem, I did get in the way of the claws.

Didn't receive anything for killing every starfish and the crab without taking a hit. :(

FUN GAME!

Thank you for the input. The controls seem to be a big issue in general, even for me I think, and it's definitely the one part I will be revamping. I'm not sure if you've seen the newer rayman games but I like the way those control so I will try something like that. It will involve a more direct, less 'floaty' way of moving around.

I didn't know you could gain enough speed to get over those hills. I guess I will need to take that kind of thing into consideration in future.

This is really cute, the art is very well done for the style you have going.
However, controls feel very floaty - especially when you start going fast, turning feels slow. Bouncing off things is a little hectic, you sorta fly off of things at the same speed you were going before.

Is the crab boss supposed to move his claws at you or something? He just seemed to try to suck the squid in, which made him real easy to hit.

Also, small suggestion - do you plan to have the squidslam as the only attack? If he's a squid, what about something like a blast of ink?

Your work does not exist in a bubble. If one thing doesn't influence you, another will. You've clearly been influenced by Crash Bandicoot and and Ecco the Dolphin.

You shouldn't just play games in a similar vein to yours for ideas, you should play them because you can take a look at what worked, what was successful.

If it makes you feel any better, Aquaria is practically a different genre from your game. It's like an underwater Zelda game compared to your Ecco-like swimming exploration/action. I do believe you would benefit from seeing its level design and enemies, however.

Oh. maybe I will look for it then. The issue in agdg right now is people seem as if my game should control in a manor that sounds awful and it's starting to tick me off. They seriously think A & D should rotate the jellyfish and W should push it forward. It just wouldn't work.

I made an alternate download (v0.12) with the new controls to see how people like it.

You can also set it up to use a controller completely now just set the horizontal, vertical and the 'charge' button in the input menu on unity's pregame thing.

This feels a lot better! I managed to beat it pretty quickly, the controls didn't get in the way.
And they don't kill the sensation of swimming either.

I'm not sure if it's perfect, but it's surely improved and has entered the fun status on the scale.

As for the attack discussion, I'll mention Crash again - his spin not only gave forward momentum and attacked the enemy, but his sides also dealt damage (because it's a spin), you can make the electricity envelop Jellyfish in order to make the damaging area more broad.

The thing I said before about having a minimum forward momentum is more related on hitting close targets. Sometimes you won't have enough space to press directional keys long enough to apply a jump, but if there was a minimum momentum, one could aim by pressing very lightly and then pressing J alone..

The secret crystal level showed up this time, I think it wasn't there on previous release, let me check. Nope, it was there all along. But damn, I already miss the new controls.

As for anons asking for this "turret mode" style of moevement, don't.
It is a fun way of playing lots of games, but will mess up the quick direction changes we're currently able to do, which is an useful skill here. It will kinda go back to the previous "slippery" feel, I believe.

Thank you for the reply! It's nice to know the controls are moving in the right direction. I will need to tweak the way the character rotates but that concept of lining up and then pressing J should be in the next demo. I'm not sure when I plan to make that perhaps in a mother or so when I have more content to have people try out and give more feedback.

One thing to note is that I finished the entire thing without realizing you could kill things by boosting into them, didn't realize that was a thing till I read the thread. Maybe make an area where you're forced to figure that out (blocked by starfish entirely).

I also didn't figure out you could use the block to go down the area with bubbles until I'd beat the game twice just boosting down there. Maybe I'm just an idiot.

I keep getting stuck at the jumping part where there's two short jumps consecutively, 'cause the ledge model is flat topped so you get stuck on top.

The problem is, because it rotates, it gives you the impression that you're rotating him with the controls and does make you want to press the button you were holding before to keep moving. It's really disorienting, but I think the opposite should be done and the rotation dropped so you just immediately move left when going left and immediately move right when going right.

Probably the source of the problem is that you maintain momentum when turning, so you do essentially hold, say, down to go in a direction and use left and right to wiggle maneuver. Then you want to change direction and it feels weird because you're still moving in the original direction for a while and then it feels like you're circling.

That person being a drawfag is the main reason they could be so mad at the other artist, imo.
In art school a friend of mine's webcomic got famous and another one makes a living off selling her art at conventions, so I can empathize with that bitter jealousy Not excusing it, but artists commonly judge their own works based on others's art and other's success, so I could see that being a catalyst for >>15528594's continuous (and very specific) anger at this one artist in general.
Not saying it's okay, but I think most artist's have a time where they will get angry at their own art not reaching a certain standard and become bitter and lash out seeing other artist's success in comparison to their own self belittling. Most people grow out of this and realize that they really aren't all that upset at one person for making art and reaching goals, but are upset at themselves. It's so hard to get passed your own negative thoughts, but you can do it,>>15528594. We're all different types of artists sharing our work of various levels on a board community for a subject we enjoy, so let's get along and try our best.
I still have to stop myself from making hateful posts like this person, and it's hard, but you can get better. Raging at people is an easy habit to get into, especially when you're a NEET and you have the 'secret club' /jp/ mentality, because it's the only thing you have in your life. But berating people online only gets you worked up into a tizzy and continues a into negative spiral. It seems like life is only hateful and unhappy so you lash out, but you can be a happier person, Anon. You just have try. Next time you see an artist post that pissed you off, stop and think about why you feel the need to say such things and think on why you're really so angry. The Mokou story, by being nonsensical in some ways, reminds me of Alice in Wonderland, vaguely. It was all over the place though.
Honestly I felt the story didn't give us much new information, it didn't give us much that we didn't already know.
It didn't give enough non-canon stuff to think about.

It's just some mental notes about how I'm going over the story and adding more dialogue, but thank you for your interest.
One of the big criticisms I got was that characters were not fleshed out enough, so I wanted to make them feel more three dimensional. I'm doing that by adding more lines throughout the story, especially colorful ones that show who the characters are as people.

How does one incorporate Japanese influences into their style without becoming a soulless and flawed imitation like so many Deviantart weebs?

I've always wondered *why* the vast majority of western artists, even when they have styles obviously influenced by Japanese art, still have that undeniable "western" feel. Very few western artists are indistinguishable from Pixiv artists.

I don't know how to describe the coloring, but particularly Americans use really harsh contrasting colors. Most people see anime and think big eyes = anime, others think "I like anime, but I don't like this thing about anime" and so they use anime influences along with a whatever western things they think makes it look better. Sometimes this is more realistic anatomy. They also tend to use really, really even lines, even the people in this thread, instead of having any sort of difference in line thickness/line weight. There's also something about the way they place facial features that probably is due to racial differences in head shapes or just them being shit.

Above all, they tend to copy ANIME and not MANGA, so they draw in a really simplified style meant to be cheaply animated, instead of the more complex style of manga or good artists drawing static images.

Another real problem is a lot of them just don't put any fucking effort into their drawing. I don't think they're flawed imitations, even if they're soulless. There are shit Jap artists that draw the same. It's just lazy, shitty art.

One thing that bothers me is why a lot of eromanga(as in primarily draw eromanga), particularly doujin, artists look different from "legit" artists. There's some sort of thing but I don't know what it is.

>How does one incorporate Japanese influences into their style
If you want to look "Japanese", copy someone you like until you draw like them.

This is awesome!
If you want to hint at "I am small and am not strong enough to push it", you can make the stones slightly tilt when you try to press them in small size.

Is the new forward dash short like that all the time, or only if you press it while standing still? Because I liked the freedom of giving those giant dashes mid-route.

Thinking about other variations on what do to at your game is hard, generally when I design a game the enemies are the most complex part. But let's see here...

Exploring the idea of the shock, maybe you could, after hitting a special type of enemy, gain control of him for a few seconds, like a remote control. That would make you able to fit into very small places, for instance.

You could also steal the shell of a crab and use it as protection, maybe get a ride with a seagull that tries to capture you, making a gliding passage to the game (just shock her and get free again!).

There could be areas where it's all dark and only a bolt will light up the way, so you have to shoot your way in, or even light up some props on the scenery to keep a "lantern" going.

Underwater minefields, whirlpools, bubble-riding (imagine a sea turtle snoring and making bubbles that go up)...

>>15537904
Outstanding. I used to paint/draw like this, it was a lot of fun. But I don't have drawing skills enough to make it look good.

>>15541771
Don't copy. Draw some realism then and simplify it your way.
You can see what works on anime, but only use it if you understand it. That way it can feel authentic.

Unless if by "not looking a weeaboo" you mean "looking like a nip", in case which you SHOULD copy and become soulless.

i have a lot of my own theories on this.

it's the attitude. you have to see style as a way of expressing character. think animation, cartooning, even disney.
but many westeners pick up anime as a "style". for example, they will draw the eyes, but they don't know how to fully use them and think about it like an animator, comicker or cartoonist would think about it.

-I will probably do something like that with the rocks to show the player can move them.
-The giant dashes are still in, the short dashes are just for standing still.
-Some sort of shock attack would be nice to have in game. The shell idea is neat too.

Sul and Sudeste have a fair amount of whites.
Norte is more native indians, Nordeste has lots of mestizos because of slavery/agriculture and Centro-Oeste gets all sorts of mixes because it's in the middle of it all.

Blacks are mainly in Rio and Bahia,
Nips are mainly in São Paulo (and some in Paraná).

Statistically, I could probably have drawn everyone as black + indian + white mestizos, but that would be no fun; any place I could find an excuse to add a blondie, ginger or brunette, there it is.

Very generically speaking, we have:
Sul: germans, poles, ruskies;
Sudeste: nips, italians, syrians, jews;
Nordeste: dutch
Everywhere: portuguese, spaniards

I got puppet 2D, for this and other projects. It's not great but it's nice and does what I want. The alternative was spine, which is a really great program, but It ain't $300 for a one man project great. Maybe in the future I could use it. For now I use their script to export layers to .png images which saves me a bunch of time. Puppet 2D allows for mesh deformation and adding skeletal systems so it should be a lot more bendy than the crab.
