It's literally based off a true story. If you search the Japanese internet you can find the 2ch archives of the threads the real Densha Otoko posted in and all the replies from anons that helped him get to where he ended up.

I've only read the book but I liked it.

Terrible.

The snivelling main character put me off the most. Goddamn it, the amount of scenes that dragged on with him snivelling out some emotional speech with fucking snot running down his face. He was infuriating.

Then there was the amount of celebration scenes panning across all the characters, over reacting because he received a text message or something.

The stereotypes of all the characters (huur I like the army, so my bedroom looks like a goddamn warzone and I type at my PC in full camo gear), the awful 'emotional' soundtrack.

The ONLY good thing about it was that guy who was fucking with the main character, like suing radio controlled cars to try and sabotage dates and such. He was funny at least.

You could say I might have taken it a little too seriously, but how people can watch this and not find the main character insufferable is beyond me.

I find it calming and yet weirdly nostalgic at the same time. It's the type of trip that I'd want to spend a day taking when I eventually save enough money to go to Japan.
