Killed a human (himself)

Became a youkai in the human village (ABSOLUTELY forbidden)

Why is this forbidden? Because it gives people bad ideas and throws the balance of the village out of whack. The village is supposed to be basically humans only (plus ABSOLUTELY HARMLESS natural youkai), he fucked with everything and put things in dangerous. Humans are supposed to fear youkai, not admire and become them.

Marisa and anyone not living in the village don't have to follow the village's rules, so no, Reimu would not kill Marisa.

A human becoming youkai is taboo and doing things to throw off the tenuous balance of Gensokyo is dangerous. Reimu goes and slaps all the youkai shit when they try to do it so it stands to reason the humans have to be regulated too. If one side gets out of control its all over.

Mamizou also implies the seeking beyond the veil of Gensokyo is a good way to invite dark magic.

The Human Village mob, such as it is when you get any large group of humans together, are pretty dumb. It's been shown over and over. Very clearly susceptible to groupthink, gossip, rumors, fads and trends, and so on.

He simply couldn't be allowed to serve as an example and inspire anyone into seeing it his way and doing what he did.

You give the jinyou a chance, what happens when the next village human wants to become a youkai, and the one after that? Then two, three, four more after?

Like >>15373037 said, humans aren't supposed to want to become youkai, they're supposed to fear them.

You get a large enough population of humans in the village with community ties who can influence others who not only no longer fear youkai, but want to be them, you're threatening the belief system on which Gensokyo operates.

>>15373286
Reimu's job is to be a balancer. She isn't supposed to favor anyone. All are equal in her eyes and thus have an equal chance of being punished in the name of the greater, harmonious good that keeps Gensokyo together and relatively peaceful should they step out of line.

>> No.15373802

>>15373286
Reimu and Yukari have to ensure balance for the survival of Gensokyo as a whole. The entire outside world doesn't believe in youkai anymore. Gensokyo is mostly a place for youkai and gods with few believers to survive because magic and shit is still believed in. This is the ground level stuff.

There is still balance needed. Yukari has killed scores of youkai as well in order to make sure the humans aren't overwhelmed and the spell card rules are explicitly designed so youkai can raise trouble and scare humans but not kill people and wipe out the Human Village. It's so they can live by making the humans know they exist without being able to actually kill people.

The humans are the source of the existence of pretty much every magic creature in Gensokyo by believing in them or fearing them. They're also incredibly important sources of faith which is why all the factions, especially the religious ones, are fighting over them. That's why they're dangerous as well.

If the humans rally and no longer fear or believe in their power, it's the end of the youkai and the collapse of Gensokyo, unless the youkai in turn break spellcard rules and just start killing people so they legitimately fear them. Humans becoming youkai also tips the scales in an unintentional way, tipping it to the youkai side. If humans start becoming youkai en masse or following a jinyou, then the faith is sucked away from everyone else.

A strong human village is the end of Gensokyo and the Touhou universe because the youkai will lose their power and influence and die off unless they once again can start attacking the human village for real (like Remilia did) which would just cause Reimu to kill them.

There's also just the idea that sacrificing ones humanity and killing yourself to become a youkai is some serious taboo occult shit and worth being punishable over which is a simpler, but also effective, explanation.

Reimu went full exterminatus mode over a minor threat, more or less.

Gensokyo's balance hinges on youkai remaining as mysterious spooky things instead of revealing themselves. When a youkai's "schtick" becomes common and mundane, like yamabiko and echoes, they're pretty much fucked. This is why Akyu lies out of her ass about the abilities and threat level of youkai.

Since this guy had a semi-reliable way to become youkai, he could have inspired other villagers to do similar things. If there are more ex-human youkai, people have no reason to fear them because you're not facing an unknown terror anymore, you're just facing your uncle the grocer as a loli with a silly hat. And that's a major threat to Gensokyo.

Reimu overreacted because nobody really knew who the fortune teller was or whether he actually became a youkai to begin with, he promised up front that he'd vanish and not make any trouble. He posed no real danger. But she offed him anyway because she's a murderous asshole and he wasn't a cute girl so nobody would grieve over him anyway.

Why would it? I remind you there was exactly no outrage when Miko began taking apprentices for hermitage training, and that it remained a minor boom until people found out just how strict Miko really is.

And then there's the fact that one of the manga (don't recall which, may have been one of the Three Fairies' series) states Reimu has the earmarks of becoming a hermit, and we haven't seen her faith-based (miko) abilities diminished.

>But you are free to love youkai. Byakuren gets along with them and encourages others
You misunderstand how Byakuren's sham of a temple works. She publicly claims co-existent intent, but the truth of the matter (as pointed out several times in Symposium by Marisa) is that Byakuren's temple is a grounds to lure humans in for youkai to do with what youkai do with humans. It enables perhaps weaker and more complacent youkai to receive cheap sustenance. Kogasa used to use their graveyard for this very purpose until Miko's revival and Kogasa's subsequent branching out into legendary smithing and babysitting.

While the "we want both youkai and humans to come and pray" thing Byakuren preaches is not exactly false, many people misunderstand its true meaning.

>Plenty of educated religious people.
The most popular religions in the Outside World (supposing it's literally the same as our world) worship so-called heavenly gods. Meanwhile Gensokyo's gods are native gods - physical deities with very specific characteristics, duties and abilities.

For instance, Suwako's ability is to "create land". An educated person would point out it's quite impossible to create something out of nothing. They would not believe it. A heavenly god may operate subtly, out of an unreachable plane of existence, but native gods are earthly and immediate. Shizuha literally paints autumn leaves when the right time comes. An educated person knows that's not why leaves turn orange/brown. And so on.

This is why I said I wasn't fedora-ing. It wasn't a jab at the intelligence of IRL religious people. Gods in Gensokyo quite literally need people to remain ignorant of their areas of influence for continued religious belief.

When all society knows is religion or the supernatural, people tend to rely on what they know. When science is introduced and understood, some people will stray from prior beliefs because they have more faith in the natural world than the supernatural world. Dictators use religious rhetoric to make themselves appear as a kind of holy person or supreme being that is akin to worship. It's not about theism vs. atheism, it's about observation v. faith.

It's not unfair. Reimu is trained, it's her job and her life.
Kasen did a better job, despite her lifestyle being more buddhist than Shinto.

How is spirituality bad?
Spirituality is looking heyond the material world. I could also argue it's more romantic, and makes the world more beautiful and interesting. Look at love, some would see it as a powerful force of the soul with divine origins. Others see it as chemicals.
In Gensokyo spirituality is very important. Shame I dont believe in enough to ever live there without being killed for denying magical creatures exist. There should be an Umineko crossover with 2hu.

>Shit happens in Gensokyo that violates our concept of reality.
The problem with Gensokyo is that the shit that also happens in our reality is ascribed to youkai, who die when that shit's real origin is revealed to the psychically active humans.

Point in case: echoes in Gensokyo aren't caused by yamabiko, but yamabikos' continued existence depends on people thinking otherwise. Akyuu writes of a mere rumour of the sound wave explanation causing yamabiko to disappear. Humans in Gensokyo NEED to believe certain things about reality, no matter what actually happens in it.

You can explain echod, good for you. Meanwhile Sakuya is effortlessly stopping time, Flan makes clones out of thin air, Yukari has all sorts of bullshit powers, and Lunarians are the most advanced civilization. They still have gods and invoke their power.

Just accept magic overrides reality, and Gensokyo operates on different laws to our world. Magicians dont eat for energy, it's also not solar power like plants as Patchy stays in the basement, she isnt expending energy or is producing her own.
Aya is also not effected by gravity or air resistance when moving at insane speeds, that would probably make a human pass out or rupture vessels, the change in air pressure alone should fuck up her ears.
Flying is another issue itself, care to explain how Reimu flies? If it was using her energy, her weight, gravity and speed/distance should put lots of strain on her body.
Alternatively ask Eirin if magic exists, she's insanely smart and should give you an in depth answer. Considering she is immortal, I expect the answer is yes.
It's magic.

First of all, Lunarians invoke HEAVENLY gods, who exist on an entirely different set of rules from native gods, who are the endangered species. In fact, Lunarians' presence and inventions are potentially lethal to native gods.

Second of all, not all youkai are personifications of natural phenomena. Those youkai, while still dependent on human belief to an unknown degree (thanks, ZUN), are not threatened by any anti-thesis or scientific fact. Magicians especially, and I'm sure there is no "anti-vampire" scientific concept other than a god damn Belmont. Same goes for other powerful youkai, such as Yukari (implied to either not need sustenance or sustaining herself with human flesh in the Outside World), Yuuka (flower-like, probably lives off of sunlight, was actually deemed an aberration by Eiki), Keine (curses are another sort of stuff) or Aya (Tengu are an independent mythical species).

Reimu's stated ability as a Hakurei miko is to fly.

Eirin is a fucking Lunarian, one of the oldest ones, and potentially even related to the heavenly gods. Of course she can do magic.

In other words, almost every youkai and god has its own condition for existence. A few examples:
>Kanako and Suwako
Need active worship to continue existing.
>Sanae
Her "native god" half can be killed off, leaving her a "purified human" with only the benefits that come with being a wind priestess. Her power to cause miracles would be gone though.
>Reimu
Nobody knows what the Hakurei god is like. Complete unknown.
>Oni
Independent species. Powerful enough to exist on its own.
>Tengu
Same as above.
>Kyouko
A personification of a very specific natural phenomenon. Vanishes if belief in her causing said phenomenon is diminished.
>Kappa
Probably feed on the power of shirikodama.
>Patchouli and Alice
A born magician and a human-turned-magician respectively. Sustained by magic.
>Sekibanki
A "fear-based" youkai. Needs to keep herself in humans' fears to continue living.
>Kogasa
Another "fear-based" youkai. Unique in her attempts to branch out and receive spiritual sustenance from other activities. Still scares humans from time to time. It is not known whether this is because her other methods are weak, or because it remains a habit.
>Hina
A native goddess of misfortune. The logical conclusion is she feeds on misfortune "sacrificed" to her by humans.
>Remilia
Subject to the usual vampire rules.
>Murasa
Yet another fear-based youkai. Byakuren probably unwittingly condemned her to extinction in a land with no sea-faring vessels whose crews would fear sinking.
>Byakuren
Uses paizuri to extract vigor and lifeforce from young human males.

Is this the controversial opinions thread?

Lunarians are their own faith cattle. There are always a scant few who understand the "human perception influences reality" meta like Eirin, Yukari, Mamizou, and possibly Reimu.

Mass human ignorance is a must for belief, faith and magic as a whole.

I'm saying reality is different in Gensokyo.
You talk about how Gensokyo requires ignorance to sustain it's false reality. I said this was untrue as Gensokyo shows us that reality doesnt apply. You even admit this by saying how magicians survive off magic. Ignoring how magic cant exist in reality, your body needs energy to move and sustain itself. Magicians need energy, and if they arent absorbing it then they are making their own energy. Which breaks the laws of physics, energy cant be created or destroyed. This also applies to hourai immortals who regenerate no matter what.
By recognizing magic, you admit reality is meaningless. So while certain youkai may be effected, Gensokyo as a whole isnt based on ignorance due to how some things are literally unexplainable.
I would also argue youkai extinction itself is illogical, I just accept it due to magic. If you saw a yamabiko, but stopped thinking it caused echos, it shouldnt vanish. It would just stop making echos. Plenty of animals had superstitions, they still exist today. If you saw a yamabiko you would still believe it existed, as you and others saw and talked with it.
But again Gensokyo isnt logical, it doesnt need ignorance as it will never be understood. I agree with the view Yukari is the embodiment of the fear of the unknown. Every youkai is based on something after all.
I would also say lunarian gods and native gods are no different outside of worshippers.

>I would also say lunarian gods and native gods are no different outside of worshippers.
Well, you would be in direct contradiction of ZUN's word of god, but if that's what floats your boat, that's what floats your boat.

As for the rest of your post, it's also in contradiction with the canon. Some youkai are sustained by magic or things outside of human control, but some of them are extremely dependent on superstition and direct belief. Native gods and yamabiko are one such thing, as evidenced by the entirety of Moriya's history, Kyouko's article in PMiSS, Nue's actions in FS, Aya's commentary toward complacent youkai in BAiJR, and so on.

I'm sorry, mate. I realise you have a firm headcanon version of Gensokyo, but some of these things really are explained and explicated upon in the actual canon. You can't just dismiss them if you're discussing said canon.
