Why people spend so much time working for Danbooru? Do you get paid if you're a contributor?

Neets need to feel useful somehow, either that or people with no real social skills that want for some reason to be popular so their only method to achieve that is climbing random Internet social ladders.

Oh, fuck. I was there right when that shit happened. Hadooki was competent with managing/moderating shit on the site, but man, he could really be a pedantic asshole at times. The forum could also be pretty toxic at times, especially if you're new and might make a mistake or two. It seems to be much more calm in recent years, though.

I also used to be a Janitor on Danbooru for a number of years, and spent a lot of time tag-gardening and approving posts. My main motivation was that Danbooru was the main place to find animu girls in an organized manner, so it needed to be well-curated. And because I wanted to contribute back due to all the enjoyment out of the site from the insane amount of work others had done by uploading and tagging stuff.

You could also argue there's Gelbooru as an alternative, which tends to have more stuff than Danbooru. And you're right, but they don't take anywhere near as much care with quality-control, and certainly not with tagging.

Anyway, I did spend a lot of time on the site, but nowhere near as much as some users, such as Mr. GT. It felt like he literally spent his entire day on the site, and pixiv, trying to one-up everyone else and upload everything first. Pretty sure he eventually got banned for neglecting to tag his posts, and for being a bit of a degenerate.

I do still check back into the forum once every few months, and people's dedication to the site never stops impressing me. Some new user recently took it upon himself to clean up the thousands and thousands of posts that only had a "tagme" tag.

>> No.15328475

>>15327365
Im still slighlty annoyed that you can only search a max of 2 tags at a time

Oops, forgot to answer the question. And the answer is no, nobody gets paid. Every contributor/builder/janitor/moderator/admin is a volunteer.

The admin also pays for the site out-of-pocket. At least since 2011, the yearly cost has been $8500 to keep the site going. I don't even know how he does it, since the site doesn't even have ads anymore, and I'm skeptical user donations could cover that much.

Sure it was 2011 but that's quite a lot for those 3 servers.

I'm too antisocial to join any groups and too lazy to complete any projects, but Danbooru gives me the opportunity to share things I like with others with no responsibility and minimal time investment.

If you click the link in the blogpost I linked earlier, it's even scarier for some other animu/hentai sites.

The desire to feel needed or appreciated is an extremely powerful thing, especially for hikis and the like (as has already been mentioned). You are reaching out and affecting the world, even if it's something as "trivial" as an image repository.
This is also about the simple human instincts tied to being a tribal and social species. There's no reason for any of us to spend time to give any sort of positive response to a thread here, but we do it anyway.
I am anonymous and I could shit all over your thread, but I don't. Why?

>Mr. GT
I don't really understand the point of blocking/complaining users who spend so much time uploading stuff, it seems like he completely stopped uploading after he got blocked.

Isn't that counter-intuitive?

>> No.15329513

>>15329448
From what I remember, he didn't get banned because of being a prolific uploader, but because he was consistently not tagging his uploads, or blatantly putting incorrect information in. Since he was always in a rush to be the first one to upload anything new, he neglected to tag or rate anything, leaving in his wake a metric ton of work for other users to clean up.

A couple of straws that broke the camel's back (among complaints from many users over a very long period of time) was not properly tagging and rating posts that had extremely questionable content in them, acting like an anti-social degenerate to lots of people, and creating sockpuppet accounts.

Any particular reason to use danbooru when gelbooru exist?

>> No.15330988

Gelbooru's community is even more retarded, a good deal of the indexed images are copied from Danbooru, and Danbooru has an active translation community.

If you don't care about those and just like pictures then no.

You just aren't OTACOOL dudester

>> No.15331760

Because people are fucking retarded and willing to work for free if you give them some mediocre amount of "power" like being able to delete tags off something.

I don't really understand why people use these sites, but then I don't really understand why people would even bother looking at images that aren't part of a set. Pixiv is so disgustingly superior to boorus that I actually feel sad for the EOP crowd, but then nobody in their right mind is going to translate hundreds of thousands of pages of descriptions.

When it comes to finding images, I have 2 methods. Either I search for a series/girl, 10% of the time, or I search by fetish, which is the other 90% of the time. Anything without text on, I'm almost certainly going to ignore, unless it's a collection. Boorus, in my book, are more for finding a single image you once saw by searching for tags like "shimapan around one leg" or other completely pointless observational tags. They're absolute trash for finding anything else, and the only reason they're popular is because they're the only option if you don't know basic Japanese.

More quality control, translations.

>> No.15332163

>>15331769
>quality control
Translation: images that particularly appeal to the moderation's tastes.
I don't want a collection of images that these few faggots like, I want a gallery composed of as many Japanese images from pixiv, nijie, twitter and whatever else there can be, tagged to a decent enough level. Danbooru doesn't provide me that.

>> No.15332556

>>15330976
Basically there is none. Few bots auto-update tags and translations anyway. And gelbooru works much faster for me.

I'm the Janitorfag from earlier, and even I have to mock quality-control on Danbooru (even though I espoused it as better than Gelbooru in that regard).

Part of the reason I left the site was because so many people were being appointed to Janitor status, that basically everything was getting approved. Lots and lots of hot garbage was getting in, and me being there made no difference anymore because I couldn't compete with other people who could afford to be there all-day, and their need to approve as much as possible.

I think the admin said that the reason for adding so many Janitors was so that the site wouldn't just be the reflection of a few fags' tastes (though I approved a lot of posts I didn't like or even hated, if I felt they were objectively good enough). And I do agree with him on that. Maybe the way forward was to broaden as much as possible, and just create better filtering tools.

Random trivia: it was fairly common for people to contribute a lot to the site initially, and then completely stop once they got noticed and promoted to contributor/janitor/mod status. In a vein simillar to >>15329445, I think some people were driven by attaining power, and once they got it, they got bored.
