Youkai don't "lose" their powers. They aren't humans/ogres/faeries with superpowers stuck on, but embodiments of their particular field. A youkai's ability is what defines it as an existance to begin with. I gap, therefor I am.
To a youkai, losing and ceasing to use an ability is exactly the same thing - giving up living.

Of course, there are exceptions. Youkai that have additional abilities stuck on later in life (like Okuu) may have the extra ability removed.

Whats the name of the yukari eyebrow manga anyway, I'm pretty sure I have it but I have no idea what its called.

And incidentally, how the hell do you guys memorize every single manga you have? When I'm looking for a specific doujin, I have to browse through all of them because I can never remember what its called.

As far as I know, Touhou's interpretation of youkai stay at their peak of power even while snoozing away the last years of their lives. Some may be weakened depending on type, but they never get "depowered" Western superhero style.

But of course, I may be wrong. You know how things are with ZUN and canon.

Oni are even more long-lived, far more, but their entire species left us once we didn't need them anymore, so they met the same fate.

In many ways Yukari came after the dominant time of youkai, the time where they still populated the world, and she seems to be benefiting from it, technically ruling over Gensokyo and all. However, she’s deluded herself into maintaining the illusion that youkai are still in their prime, like she is, and has forced Gensokyo into stagnation since she practically owns it. That’s why Kanako is her rival; the former has been attempting to cause industrial revolutions everywhere, but Yukari realizes this is why youkai have been trapped in small little havens like Gensokyo. Though Kanako wants youkai to be the ones to gain the technology, Yukari thinks this will either lead to the humans in Gensokyo having to form their own haven within a haven, which she doesn’t want since she’s tsundere for them, or the youkai ceasing to use their powers, thus disappearing.

Still waiting for someone to provide at leasts some sort of link or so to back all these claims of youkai doing this and that as they grow old.

The only thing I saw in PMiSS about it was a note on Yuka, "As youkai live longer, they become less active." This doesn't have to mean sleeping, and it says absolutely nothing about death, but could simply be some of the more excessive youthful energy wearing off. Heck, not even the (somewhat commonly accepted) "facT" that yukari sleeps all that much needs to be true (depending on how much she might have been bullshitting us in PCB), as "Though she claims to hibernate through the winter, we have only her word on it and it's unknown where she lives, so this is unconfirmed."

Straight Yukari is the best.

According to Perfect Memento, Youkais simply have a longer life span than humans. Looking back at the articles, I wish they would get translated faster. The ones describing species are all pretty much incomplete. A shame too since they are all pretty interesting.

As for Reisen, she's not really a "youkai" just a Moon rabbit. She's no more youkai than Worf or Yoda. My fault for not specifying.
