You are probably right to some degree, I don't know much about young Japanese relationships (and I'm likely seeing it through my less than prudish western eyes), but some things cross boundaries like general body language.

Take the highlighted pairs for example.

Pair 2, notice the difference between the male's and the female's facial expression (we're ignoring the other parts of the body because reasons), or between the "genuine" pair to the right.

Pair 2 male has his face not scrunched, but relaxed.

Outside of school I'd basically been a recluse since age twelve so barring the few friends I had and could talk to about anime and games I just never participated in the social order.
