Assuming this story is even true, if the drive wasn't physically damaged or disposed of, and new data wasn't written to it, you can probably recover most of it. Even if the drive was formatted. Use Recuva. And if your drive WAS physically damanged or disposed of (ie they opened the case and wrecked it or took it out of the laptop or trashed the computer), you should get a new fucking family. When you tell an operating system (Windows for sure) to delete, even empty recycle bin or delete permanently without going to recycle bin in the first place, it's not deleted! All that the OS does is mark that space on the drive as free for new data to be written to it. Your old data is still there

So to securely delete, eg financial information, government documents, health or business records, you need to overwrite that space. So for instance, deleting a full drive and then installing fuck huge games like GTA 5 will erase that data. Or using a program that can wipe free space, such as CCleaner. It will fill up the rest of your drive with garbage data and then delete that garbage data, erasing the record of whatever previous data you had. Even then, it is best to do more than 1 pass (ie, overwrite multiple times) since government and some businesses possess tools to get it back anyways, for investigations and such.
