Come to think of it, I have no idea why she was sweeping the parking lot.

It was also sort of odd that the mansion on the hill had a parking lot adjacent.

Still, I was always curious about the inhabitants of that old place, and this was the first time I saw someone in the general area.

So, I watched her sweep.

She seemed fairly pleased by it, though I have no idea why. Seemed like it would be much easier to use a mechanized street sweeper than a broom.

For some reason she was wearing a dark kimono with a white apron on it. I guessed she was some sort of maid, though I'd never heard of a maid dressed that way. On the other hand, I don't have that much experience with maids anyway, and I suppose if I were rich enough to afford a maid I could have her dress any which way I wanted, given enough payment.

Hmm. The lack of that smooth shiffing sound interrupted my train of thought. I guess she stopped.

And was now looking at me.

"Er, hello."

She didn't respond. She just kept staring, that slightly mischievous smile fixed on her face.

"Uh, nice weather we're having, isn't it?"

I took a few cautious steps forward, to better facilitate communication, and also to get a better look at her.

She didn't draw back or respond in any way, still with that smile, so I assumed it was alright.

"So, um, you work in this mansion here?"

Finally she responded, with a nod. I guess nonverbal communication worked, though limited to body language on her side.

As I got closer, I noticed that she had a cute navy blue ribbon in her soft, brilliant red hair. It was tied up in a cute bow and made for a nice contrast.

It reminded me of that white ribbon I had picked up around the corner, which someone had misplaced outside the gate. Perhaps it had dropped out of someone's luggage when moving, or perhaps it had landed there after being blown on the wind.

I wonder if it was hers.

Fishing through my pockets, I carefully retrieved the slightly soiled white ribbon, and held it out to her.

She just stared at me. Never moving, never making a sound, just looking straight at me, as I held it out.

We stayed like this for several minutes.

When I awoke, it was already night.

That's odd. The last thing I remember was handing over a ribbon to that vaguely maidish girl.

I stood, and for some reason had a compulsion to look at my hands.

They were normal, clean. I looked myself over, and I was pretty much exactly how I was when I gave her the ribbon.

I wasn't quite sure why I was expecting different.

Anyway, I was clearly not in the parking lot any more, so I had a look around.

I appeared to be in an alleyway of some sort. A tinge of fear ran through me. I remember some months ago there were a series of gristly murders or somesuch where the victims were found in an alleyway.

Those were a long time ago though, and I had thought they had stopped. Still, the thought increased my stress level, and so I took a closer look at my surroundings.

On the ground I saw two shadows.

One wasn't mine.

I spun around, and there she was, standing by the wall.

It seemed like she was taken aback by my movement, as if I wasn't supposed to wake up yet.

I stared back at her, putting two and two together. She must have done this. I'm not enough of a naive protagonist to assume otherwise.

For some reason, my throat felt dry, and I could feel my heart starting to pound.

She turns, and begins to run.

And then, I'm after her. I need to stop her. Need to know what happened. Need to know why I have the flu.

No, that's not it. I just have to give chase. That's all I can do.

We run.

She leads me everywhere. Streets and alleyways. Parks and markets. Tunnels and hills.

She must be heading back to that mansion. To where she can lock the gate behind her. To where I can't reach her.

But she stops. She pauses for a second to hold a railing. She's tired. She must have dragged me out there, it must have taken the greater portion of her energy.

But she can still hear me coming. Every step I make on the hard asphalt echoes off the hard walls of the tunnel.

And she's gone again. I'm closer now. And we're close to the mansion as well.

We run past the gate. It was probably locked. She must be on the way to a side entance.

And she does. She fiddles with her apron, producing a key, and unlocks a door.

I lost her.

I didn't hear any steps going upwards, though, so she must still be on this floor.

Wait.

What am I doing? This is a home invasion. They could lock me up for this for a very long time.

But my body wouldn't stop. It kept searching. I kept searching. I needed something.

Then I saw it. Movement. From the room just before the west wing.

I'm there in a second, and there she is, staring out from behind the door.

I push her down, and hold her there.

Why was she still smiling?

She was down on the floor now, looking up at me, but that plastic smile never even tried to drift away from her face.

Then I realized it.

Her smile was still there because her face was incapable of any other expression.
