If I said no becuase I dont want to die yet, would Komachi be the type to get angry and force me?
I want to be like Yuyuko and float around doing ghost things with a cute girl who looks after my garden.

Nah she's lazy. Then again that scythe is pretty fuckin' strong in the games, so would you risk it?

Shinigami don't actually come to kill you or harvest your soul, except in the case of hermits. They'll only meet you at the Sanzu River once you go there yourself.

As for becoming a ghost, you either have to hold a grudge, not realize you died, or otherwise be stubborn enough to remain in the world of the living. According to PMiSS, ghosts can pass on by either achieving nirvana, or by their bodies being given a proper memorial ceremony; however, in the latter case, it's unclear exactly what happens. Perhaps you're sent to hell at that point, or possibly taken out of the cycle of reincarnation completely. And since Yuyuko is a special case, having been appointed to her post by the Yama, I don't think being an ordinary ghost is really worth that risk. It seems like a fairly unhappy existence overall.

>And since Yuyuko is a special case, having been appointed to her post by the Yama
I dont remember hearing anything about appointments?
I just thought it was due to the circumstance of her death, and not having her corpse dug up and buried.
>or otherwise be stubborn enough to remain in the world of the living
Thats how I will live. I refuse to due when I reach Gensokyo, not until I have indbroken Yukari. Allthough maybe Yuyuko would be a better choice if I were a ghost.IU wonder if ghosts can have sex, Youmu is half phantom, which is sorta like a ghost.

You should really read PMiSS/SoPM, they explain a lot about this sort of stuff.

Yuyuko was appointed to manage the Netherworld partly because of her ability, and partly because of her exceptional staying power despite not holding any grudges. She's unusual, and perfectly suited to that role.

Ghosts can certainly have sex. Though their bodies aren't made of flesh, they "can't be told apart from a normal human by a casual observer"; they have enough presence to touch and interact with people to any extent short of causing physical harm. Though again, Yuyuko is probably the only ghost you'd want to try it with.

Phantoms, on the other hand, have "no physical body nor specific form", and "they're similar to air". You'd be just as well off sticking your dick in a freezer and waving it around.

Youmu specifically is a half-phantom, and the human part of her body is pretty much normal, so you could absolutely have sex with her. It might be a bit disconcerting though, since her body is supposedly colder than a normal human's.

This is somewhat a change of topic, but I've been away for some time and wanted to look up a post on warosu; apparently, it is dead now, with the latest archived snapshot of cloudflare from January.

Are all those posts lost forever, or did someone manage to archive them somehow? I couldn't find anything about it.

Someone managed to fuck one, Youmu is proof of that.

Eiki is literally Yuyuko's boss >>14854805 already covered it but the whole business of the afterlife is one huge bureaurocracy and Yuyuko tries to avoid her at all costs.

Even Eiki herself was effectively 'elected' to her position as mentioned in OSP and WaHH I think it was and is considered just one department in the grand scheme of things.

Hopefully not.
It does say it's being restored.

For now we only have the temporary archive,

But it doesn't have the old posts.

The Konpaku bloodline could have been magically created by rituals separating part of the soul from the body, or the work/blessing of a deity.

I never understood death in Gensokyo.
Eiki wants people to go to heaven.
They do, becoming celestials.
Shinigami then keep trying to kill them.
They end up before Shiki anyway.

I wonder what happens to a yama when it dies. Due to her power, is it even possible for Shiki to sin? She seems to have a ticket straight to heaven. The downside is being completely autistic where you see everything as black and white.

Shinigami don't try to kill celestials; you're thinking of hermits. Celestials are celestials because they've achieved nirvana, and no longer accumulate the sin of living and all that. I think.

As others have mentioned, the afterlife in Touhou canon is a total mess. There's some huge bureaucracy that's managed by a vague 'them', encompassing Higan, the Netherworld, the various Heavens and Hells, and Former Hell (at least at one time). And these places are involved in managing the souls of the dead, ghosts, spirits, divine spirits, evil spirits, and celestials (which I'm pretty sure are all distinct things, and separate from vengeful spirits, vulgar spirits, poltergeists, and phantoms).

A neat feature for the next issue of SCoOW would be a flowchart listing each realm, where it fits in, and who's in charge of it. Too bad it'll never happen because ZUN is frustratingly vague about everything in-universe.

Komachi
>If you do defeat the death god that comes for you, you'd gain a little extension on your life.
>Hermits and Celestials are usually the ones who keep on winning.

Komachi
>Even celestials have lifespans as well as humans.
>However, their lifespans do not end as their lifespans.
>So you do understand what that means, then?
>From me, you've already finished your lifespan several times.
>And every time, you fight the death god sent to get you,or something like that.
Tenshi
>Heh heh,
>That's right.
>Are you saying you're here to try to pick me up again?
>How futile.

Celestials are just hermits who live in paradise and are stronger. I think Ghost is probably the best thing to become. Atleast if you can be like Yuyuko.

>Shinigami then keep trying to kill them.
They don't kill anyone or claim anyones souls, Komachi says the idea of Shinigami killing people is a huge superstition they whipped up to drive fear into living beings. The scythes they carry around are part of the whole charade and is basically their 'uniform' for intimidating the deceased.

Shinigami division is made up of 4 departments, 2 are administration based accountancy and receptionists, 1 is manual labour based logistics/ferrymen (Komachi's job). The most elite and high ranked Shinigami's are Judicial Clerks, that is to say they record the minutes of trials and judgements and make records. Ultimately they all report to the Ministry of Right and Wrong.

When Shinigami's need to claim someones soul such as the case with most hermits. Administration have to put in a request to a different division of hell the Kishin at the Ministry of Right & Wrong. They are basically the hired thugs/retrieval men of hell who actually go out to kill people and drag their souls to hell and are actually the boss of the Oni's.

A lot of it is pretty clear at least with how afterlife works, ZUN is actually pretty detailed about a lot of those aspects. As you noted yourself he makes a clear distinction between multiple types of spirits.

Generally speaking everyone at some point enters Muenzaka, goes down the Road of Liminality and then crosses the Sanzu River, it is basically the entry point of death. They eventually reach Higan which acts as a giant waiting room till their judgement and they take time to realize they're dead.

They will receive their judgement after going through due process. Sinners are sent straight to hell to be tortured and eventually executed and refined into new souls which is apparently actually quite rare as they try avoid it. Majority of souls instead end up going to the Netherworld where they either achieve Nirvana and head to Heaven or wait to become reincarnated. Exceptional souls will go straight to heaven but apparently Heaven at the moment is horribly corrupt and caught up in some kind of political power play by the Celestials who are trying to seal off Heaven's borders for themselves.

At the very least ZUN is starting to elaborate a bit more on hell now as of Hecatia's introduction and that the Earth, Moon and Dream world all have a hell each.

I think more accurately Celestials are basically Hermits who exploited a loophole in the system and cheated their way into Heaven.

But you're right in effect Celestial is just a class promotion change from Hermit.
