I already liked Kohaku a lot before they even touched on her backstory, and that didn't do much to shake my opinion of her either way.

She's just not as cute or hot as Arcueid or Kohaku, not as cool as Akiha, Ciel was at least more interesting, etc.

Japan's opinion is pretty good once you remove Arcueid (they love her for the foreigner aspect, which we gaijins obviously can't appreciate - see also Saber's popularity).

People who say Hisui is dull are superficial idiots. Just because she isn't some vampire or a wounded puppy dog doesn't mean she isn't interesting. What makes her so endearing is seeing her sensitive, emotional character subtly poke through her cold exterior until she finally confessed everything near the end of her route. Moeblob accusations are ridiculous due to the aforementioned and Hisui being one of the more fairly mature and understanding characters in the game, even though she's moe^11.

As mentioned before, different strokes for different folks. Then again, this is probably lost on those who feel the need to try to convince that their favorite heroines are better than everybody else's.
