Well, since a lot of people are specialized in japan here, it's not that surprising, Jiangshi are originally chinese.
I had a chinese girlfriend who told me that her grandma used to call them "hoping vampires" when she was younger.
Basically they're a mix between vampires and zombies.
They're corpses that don't rot and can be controlled by a master or their own will with magic.
They can absorb the "life force" of the people, a little bit like vampires, and modern representations (in movies, etc..) make them also drink blood.
There is so much to say about it, but I really find these legends fascinating.

You shouldn't get your feelings and ideas dictated by other people, anon.
Actually chinese peope are kinda "special" for most, and I have some difficulties with that, but like everywhere, you find wonderful people and assholes in every country, every ethnic group, etc...
Every individual is unique.

Talking about China, to me, the "golden ages" of China was the era of Confucius, when the Confucianism and Taoism were popular.
China was, even back then, very barbaric, especially for some dynasties that were really horrible, but I really love that one period because people were the most civilized and respectful.
The taoism has also some really interesting aspects, since it encourages people to disconnect from the "social rules" that weren't that good back then, and still nowadays.

>The future will suck.
Exactly, couldn't agree more with this, especially when you look what happens everywhere in the world and toward what we're going...

Sounds about right. China tried to stamp out religion, and even now they allow "freedom of religion" they moniter everything, they even have their own seperate little Catholic Church that has to put what the party says before the vatican and the bible. So yeah, no shock Taoism got hit. Didnt Stalin do something similar?
>You shouldn't get your feelings and ideas dictated by other people, anon.
Not dictaited. I just cant see it as right when whites are a minortiy, many Chinese men will never have a Chinese wife/gf and Japanese are dying out. It just seems like I would be fucking over atleast two groups if white people, Chinese people and Japanese people dated eachother. I dont want any of those groups to die out.

>China was, even back then, very barbaric, especially for some dynasties that were really horrible, but I really love that one period because people were the most civilized and respectful.
I liked some of the dynasties, because I saw their idea of unifying the world under one banner as a noble thing.
Dont know if it's bullshit or not, but I remember on here someone sayid how one warlord buried his assassin in a good tomb, becuase apparently the assassin was someone who understood him being a unifier instead of a conquerer.

Yes, Stalin did the same, he led a big anti-religious campaign with a lot of religious persecutions.
And like I said, they both did so many horrible things and killed so many people. Mao alone is responsible of the death of more than 3x the amount of people killed by the nazis, this is just unbelievable. People don't talk a lot about it though.
And sadly, today's China is not that good, I talked with many people that used to live there or visited, and it's not like the postal cards or the nice images you see on the medias, there is a lot of misery and cruelty, people are not happy and are not well treated, and that makes me sad.
Maybe this is a partial reason to some people's incorrect behavior and lack of empathy...

Could you detail more what you explained with the "group of people dying" btw? I'm not sure to understand everything.

And could you, if you have time and if you want of course, develop more the stories about the dynasties you talked about?
I personally heard really awful things about dynasties of people making genocides just because they wanted, and being very cruel. But my knowledge is not total nor perfect, so if you could give more interesting details I'd very happy to read you. I love to learn new things and I don't have many occasion to talk about Chinese history with people around me.

Japanese people arent having kids.

The assassin one? Cant, someone posted it on here and I never got a sourc.e But I'm pretty sure China had a concept of "one world under heaven" and it was sort of imperialism, but with getting the people on your side. You'll be happy to learn something new today.
Since this 25th of October, so only 2 months ago, China abolished the 1-child rule.
Sadly, it's not because of all the horrible things you used to see (families murdering their child -sometimes in very cruel ways- if it was a girl because they wanted to have a boy to help them in the farms and fields, because their living conditions were very hard and precarious).
They did this because the population was getting "old" and there weren't enough young people.

But yes, between the overpopulation from one side and the fact that many other people stop to make children, the situation is getting very weird.
Japanese people, like many european countries, don't reproduce a lot, probably because people understand that in the world we live in, our children will definitely suffer a lot in the future. Of course there are a lot of other reasons.
And yeah, there is no balance in the world, socially, ecologically, economically, politically, and I'm very scared to see what will happen in the future...
(How did we start talking about that topic, by the way?)

And for China's history, it was just general details over everything you said, I'd like to learn more in general.
When you talk about the mandate of heaven, I think I recall some memories about it, but wasn't it like France's divine right of kings in the Renaissance? Where the king could justify all the horrors he wanted to do because "the heaven/god decided it"?
How were the things in China?
You said that "if they didn't behave correctly" they would lose the "mandate", but who could judge that if their decisions are "divine"?

Also, like I said earlier, the best period in china for me was in the era of confucianism and taoism and if my memories are not wrong, it's the period when China was the most "democratic" and respectful of the people. But I don't know if what you talk about was at the same time, before or after.

>You said that "if they didn't behave correctly" they would lose the "mandate", but who could judge that if their decisions are "divine"?
It's less about behaving correctly and more how well things go during his reign.
If an emperor repels invasions and there's a good harvest, he's got the mandate, because things are going well. If the river floods and mongols kick down the wall, he loses the mandate or never actually had it at all, because clearly he doesn't have any divine favor if things suck.
The Chinese are pragmatic like that.

Yes, and I personally prefer Taoism over Confucianism.
But even if both are rivals, they share the same roots and are seek the same goal (the wisdom) and have the same chinese legacy, so they almost complete each other.

I'm gonna try to explain a little bit the stuff for the people who don't know it:
Taoism search the harmony with the universe, the nature and everything that surround us, and harmonize what seem opposed.

The way of thinking is kinda anarchic and advocates the individual liberties and refuse the rigors of the social life in general and all the rules around it, that's why you have so many taoists who isolate themselves to become hermits.
And that's where they're very opposed to confucianists who search to improve the social life, while taoists will say it's impossible and dangerous because it's something artificial that hinders the natural to express.

But we won't see confucianism in tōhō because, as far as I know and if I'm not mistaken, there is no folklore, magic and legends for the confucianism, it's more philosophy than a religion (well, we could say the same for taoism, but it's different).
Well, if we see confucianist characthers, they'll also have to be pure humans, so that would be unexpected. Could be interesting though, especially for the possible interactions with other characthers (and still more interesting than americanized characters to my humble opinion, it's only my opinion and I'm the only one bound by it, no aggression pls).

>In spite of there not being anything wrong with her body, it seems like she died at a young age. After inquiring a medical expert, it was suggested that she may have been killed by poison. Even so, a corpse with no relatives would have no one to investigate the truth behind her death. All her crimes come to the statute of limitations, after all.
>But there are times that lead us to believe that she seems to have some memories from when she was still alive. When the charm is removed and she is freed from the wicked hermit's control, it seems that she will revert back to her old behaviors. One time, she was reciting poetry while staring at nothing with the whole cemetery covered in a carpet of fallen leaves. It was a little horrifying.

I feel sorry for her and I love her even more after reading all of this.
But if ZUN wrote it, does he actually say that Seiga is "wicked" and so a bad person? I thought no character was actually bad/evil.

Talking about informations, for those who talked about rot, these things might interest people who didn't read it yet:
>A jiang shi controlled by a wicked hermit. Jiang shi usually do not last long as they are corpses. However, she does not rot due to an anti-decomposition spell placed on her.
>Being a jiang shi, she has nothing resembling a sense of self. As she doesn't feel pain or fatigue, she can bring out the full potential of her body, displaying incredible strength.
>As there is not a single person in Gensokyo who remembers her, her corpse belongs to the wicked hermit. Judging from the anti-rotting spell the hermit cast on her, she is probably not from this era.

It depends from your screen size and your eyes.
Actually it's really easy to do, you just have to understand the trick.
I'll try to help you because that one 3D image is amazingly well done (a lot of these kind of images are crappy, but this one is just excellent, it's just like if you were there).

You need to cross your eyes, squint (if you have difficulties, try to put your finger in front of your face and focus on it).
Normally, the image on the screen will duplicate.

The goal is that the "right double" of the left image overlays the "left double" of the right image.
I don't know if you understand what I mean.

Once both doubles overlay, actually there is something that happens like a "self-lock", and you don't have to make any effort, you just stare at the image and everything seems natural, you just feel a little bit weird, but your vision is perfectly clear.

Hope I helped you anon!

Wow, thank you very much for your infos, I read all the wiki page, it was very interesting, yet very disturbing too.

Thai people are really weird... I didn't know they hard such rituals. I wanted to get more infos so I wandered on google but I only found things written in chinese, and google image was full of weird things as well.
Well at least they don't murder anyone, they only use bodies of dead children that died in the womb of their mother, let's say it's something positive in the whole thing...

But from what I read, they use the dead bodies as amulets (they even paint it with gold) to summon spirits, so Seiga probably doen't use "dead fetuses" to attack, but she uses these amulets to tame spirits.

What I don't know is why does she uses thai amulets?
From what I know, Thailand is mostly buddhist, so why a taoist would use these kind of amulets? (Maybe because she doesn't have a moral and doesn't care anyway?)

I would like to have your opinion on these things if you don't mind.

Anyway, I also read all the article about her in Symposium of Post-mysticism, and I'm kinda disappointed and surprised because I naively thought she was a nice and benevolent person.
Actually, hermits are not evil at all, and are often more benevolent and nice than many of the other persons...

>>14520508
I tried to read infos about that but I didn't understand everything about it. Can you or someone else explain me please? I'd like to understand...
From what I know, Seiga is not interested in material things, so why would she steal from people? What would she do with the hoard?

If someone knows the answer, I'd be very interested to discuss about it and learn new infos.

It's nice to find people to have interesting and enriching discussions on this thread, I like that.

For what you say about Taoism, don't get yourself mistaken by such trivial points of view. It's more complex than that.

Same for what you said about conficianism, you need to replace the context, and things in China back then weren't that easy, there were a lot of barbaric dynasties, and these thought were really important back then.
And that's because things weren't right that the taoism is pretty interesting, because they tried to reject the wicked rules in days of yore, and also try to respect the individual liberties of people.

And for what you say about "you can't describe the tao" that makes you think it's retarded, actually it's not retarded, you seem to judge too superficially things and claim things very fast.
They added intentionally paradoxes and contradictory things "as a teaching", to make you learn to "change the conventional way of thinking and logic", and that's something today's society cruelly lacks. Everyone is pre-formated like a sheep in our society, and people forget to "think different".

And that's where taoism is the most different from confucianism because confucianism likes doctrins, and taoism rejects them.

They want to be in harmony with everything, let things happen naturally, empty yourself to be like a dead leafs in the flow of life.
If you're in a bark on a river and on the way of a small boat, you'll get yelled or insulted to move, but if the bark is empty, the boat will simply avoid and get around you.

They also let man organize by himself without being governed and oppressed.
And when you see how is our society, I think some of these ideas are really more than interesting.
We're all slaves of the things we own, yet we don't know why and they don't make us happier, we work more and more "for progress", but it only makes rich people richer, and doesn't get much people happier, because most of the people think about their personal interest and money, material things, etc... And they don't try to "progress" inside themselves...
(and our society's rules are more and more not made "to protect everyone" but to enrich people who bribe the ones who decide the rules, the justice is not a justice anymore either, but that's another story...)

Well, I didn't say I was agreeing with everything in taoism, and even less that I was a taoist, many of the things they do are kinda weird too, their refusal of technology is kinda exaggerated I agree for that (but it's also very interesting to see how today's society is on the other extreme, where people only think through that, and are totally dependent and slave of these same technologies). Their "diet" are also kinda weird, and their alchemical things too.

But many things in this philosophy is really very interesting and our society lacks of some of them, unfortunately.
There are a lot of other interesting things, like all the works on energies, meditation, there are a lot of things in taoism, especially the work on your respiration and breath that you only find in yoga and nowhere else.

Something also very important, they might reject social constraints but they are still very moral and benevolent. It's a philosophy/religion that pushes people to do good, and always try to help people. That's how you become a Xian (sennin), by doing good actions.
Their goal is immortality (not for selfish purposes but more like en enlightenment), and each time they do good, they gain "days of life", and doing bad things and harming people means losing days of life and get closer to death. (And they don't have netherworld or hell, when you die, it's over. That's why they try to avoid death.)

And actually, you shouldn't think "hermits are evil" because of Seiga, because I read you said that you think Kasen is the only good hermit.
Seiga is weird, but hermits are good in general.
Miko looks "evil" in hopeless masquerade because tasofro took too much liberties and deformed her to make her look "dark" but she's not evil.

Actually, in Gensōkyō's mythology, Sennins (hermits) who are transcended humans, ascend to higher classes, like celestials or divine spirits.
So hermits are supposed to become celestials or divine spirits, that's why you don't see so many of them (well, you wouldn't see so many of them anyway, since they're hermits).
But like I said, Seiga is weird, and that's why she can't become a celestial, because of her personality.
(talking about Seiga, let's not forget that Symposium of Post-mysticism are texts or dialogs coming from other characters of gensōkyō, so they might be very subjective and oriented, and I personally don't believe she's "that" evil, or at least I take things with hindsight and distance. )

But please don't make one case a generality and don't hate hermits without knowing them...

Yeah, actually your post made me think twice so I got back to read the symposium again.
When they said "When the charm is removed and she is freed from the wicked hermit's control, it seems that she will revert back to her old behaviors.", actually, they translated "juubaku" as charm, so it was more like a spell.
But in the japanese text, they say something that is not translated "if you remove her ofuda" then she's freed from the spell and she will go back to her old behavior.

I also learned something:
They talk about 邪仙's charm, referring to Seiga.
And apparently, on japanese pages, her specie is not "sennin" (hermit) but this word 邪仙 "jasen" that means "evil sennin" so she's technically not even a hermit but an "evil variant". That explains actually a lot of things...

So, apparently, her ofuda doesn't keep her "alive" and allow her to move like regular jiangshis (like >>14521631 stated accurately) but only keeps her under the control of Seiga...
I want to rip her ofuda now.

I think she would continue to love her....
She looks too naive, kind and candid to react otherwise... Her intelligence got also damaged with the time, so she probably wouldn't understand that Seiga uses her as a tool if no one tried to explain it to her.
And despite the fact that she uses her as a tool, Seiga is very fond of Yoshika and gives her affection, so I guess that's the first thing she'll notice.
What do you think about it?

I have a very big question:
Where can I find figures or goodies about Yoshika?
I like Griffon's figures but I didn't see any about Yoshika.
Amiami doesn't sell anything about her.
I didn't even find a fumo of her...

Do you know where I can find anything about her?

The only figure I found was the image from my post and it wasn't for sell, I didn't find anything else...

Does anybody know something? I'd be forever grateful...

Not everybody enjoys the taste of it on their food. When I eat tempura or fish and chips I rather use a dash of salt or tartar sauce. Now lemon on cooked salmon, that's good.

Do keep in mind that "stillborn fetus" in ancient parlance means "fetus that died because I've birthed it directly into a ditch". Old-fashioned abortion, as it were.

But yeah, Seiga should make a toyol little sister to Yoshika.

Probably for stillborn babies, but if we refer to the article talking about Kuman Thong, they say:
>They were obtained from the desiccated fetuses of children who had died whilst still in their mothers' womb.

What is a Toyol btw?

Talking about making a little sister, a jianghi adoptive family for Yoshika would be hella cute, though.
