He's probably actually pronouncing "wi" but since the "w" in Japanese is so soft it sounds almost like "i". If it were really "i" they would probably pronounce it like "tee" (ex. teikoku -> teekoku).

The -Japanese- wi syllable is obsolete, but not the foreign "ui".

Wi and other obsolete syllables were formerly written in all words where appropriate, but they were not pronounced as such. Spelling reform eliminated this practice. ZUN was just being old-fashioned.

I dont think they have oe. Zun needs to expand on hist material, but I figured that since many beast youkai were animal/human hybrids, that they had more human traits. They show human level intelligence, personalities, etc. So I think they are above animal instincts.

The important message I want to get across is, they can mate all year round. I hope. I believe, and in Gensokyo, faith matters.

Let's say your name is Mark but for some reason in ten years the "r" isn't pronounced anymore. Would you start calling yourself Mak or would you still keep pronouncing your name as Mark?

In other words, has ZUN ever said in voice how should we pronounce the name? There shouldn't be a definitive answer unless he clearly stated the pronunciation.

She's not raising her dress above her head almost. I'm not talking about that skirt lift thing ojou and maid type characters like to do, I mean pulling it all the way up to her neck like she's about to take it off, but not actually about to take it off. The only thing I can think of with Remilia is just her showing off her navel.

For Tewi, it's not part of some porn either, it's just some cheesecake image usually. I admit OP isn't really a good example though, and probably shouldn't have been quoted.

That's not how it works, anon. If the R has been dropped from all words in this position, then everyone would say Mahk, and you would either keep the R in Mark and everywhere else, or drop it in accordance with modern speech. It's what everyone does anyway, in England.

In Japanese's case, w before e, i and o has been dropped everywhere, so it's nothing more than an antiquated spelling. Tewi speaks modern Japanese, so there's no reason to assume that she would go pronouncing words in ways now obsolete for hundreds of years, least that anyone else would. The old spellings were maintained in Japanese for a long time after their pronunciation had conflated, so it's an established practice, actually. You know, there's a lot more to old Japanese than just the syllable wi.

Tl;Dr I just wrote a pointless autistic post but I hope it serves the greater good in some way.

Yes, but that's still her name. You know that if the "r" was dropped everywhere chances are Mark would still call himself Mark even though he would talk the new speech normally and drop the "r" everywhere else.
For example people with double consonants on their names don't suddenly drop one when presenting themselves in a country that doesn't use them but of course he's going to talk the rest of the language properly.

>Mark would still call himself Mark even though he would talk the new speech normally and drop the "r" everywhere else.
I don't know about that. A name is just a word in a language, it's not special. "Mark" even exists as a regular word in English. If you pronounce it differently, it's because you find the name completely incompatible with the context language. E.g. Mark would be very incompatible with Japanese. But Tewi is not. Bored with this discussion because talking about linguistics with people who haven't studied them is pointless.
