In 2011 some of them, RicePigeon namely, were butthurt over some wording or clarification in ZUN's policies that they thought disallowed MUGEN. In response, they overreacted and vowed to stop working on Touhou.

http://mugenguild.com/forum/topics/regarding-ricepigeon-126149.0.html

However, looking at his site he's apparently still working, albeit on the same old characters. So you can possibly disregard this.

I don't know about any of the others who were freaked out, though, since I got out of fucking with MUGEN a while ago.

However, if I'm not mistaken, some people also got out variously after MUGEN upgraded to 1.0, when the Touhou fighters changed styles, and after UFO.

Thanks for the infos. But ZUN never made such "restrictions", did he? From what I know, he was pretty cool and chill for the copyright, didn't he?
But recently I learn a lot of disappointing things about him, so that's why I ask the question, to know the details about that.

Anyway, the MUGEN community is totally retarded, seriously.
A lot of people here might be stupid and autistic but this is nothing compared to the mugen community.

The simple fact that they want to claim "ownership+right of censorship" on their creations, with the right to refrain people for sharing, is just disgusting. Like "a guy made a character" and later decided that he doesn't want to share it anymore, and no one has the right to share it again.

Fuck these people, that's not how art works. Art is meant to be shared.
And once you post something on the internet, it's not your propriety anymore, it belongs to the internet.
And these people want to change how all of these things work, they're just totally stupid.
So you see people trying to "secretly trade" by emails "rare characters". Duh, seriously...
It's literally the only community I've ever seen that does this kind of retarded things. Like if putting 10x their own name in the .txt and .def and other text files and write their name in big over the download buttons wasn't enough.
And they were saying everywhere that websites sharing creations "without asking to each single artist before" was equal to satan and that they will censor everyone giving links to these sites (warehouses).

These kind of spirit makes me want to find these people's creations and share it everywhere without asking them just to piss them off.

Well, if someone have these "missing deleted characters", I'd still be happy to see them.

He didn't. What they had a problem with was some update or clarification specifically regarding commercial release, something that wouldn't have affected MUGEN at all.

Couple that with I believe a couple fake DMCA complaints at the time, which enforced the notion that ZUN "didn't care" or was outright western-phobic, and I think that's why they freaked out.

Bottom line, I think as long as you're not trying to profit off Touhou outside doujin conventions or other officially sanctioned avenues, you're good.

I agree. MUGEN guys are strange. Insular, snobby. That and being such a pain in the ass to set up is why I just gave up on getting further involved in it.

The most relevant of ZUN's policies here is to not distribute works with the original game data. MUGEN characters pretty blatantly violate that rule. This policy has been in place for a long time and most sources describing it are quite old, but it is still generally taboo today. Videos are the like are no problem, but games and such that use the source material, even if free, are very frowned upon. I don't think this would stop something like MUGEN, but it would be dishonest to pretend as though it were okay.

Like what?

I think the most disapointing thing about him, that I learned, was the fact that he does it for money.
When asked about why he left his old job to work exclusively on Touhou, he answered — the pay wasn't good enough.
Even if that was true, all he had to do is say "I wanted to give Touhou my undivided attention, because of my love and passion for Touhou" or some shit like that.
But no, instead it's "It pays better".

This. Fucking this.
First of all, maybe it was lies from the beginning, but I got told ZUN didn't search to be overly rich, but just do nice things, like a true artist.
And that's why he gave to "the public" all his musical composition's rights and why you had so many touhou games made by tiers.

And I was totally admiring that, he was like a model in this fucked up society where everything revolves around money, I was like "wow, this guy is not like the others, he's a true artist who makes art because he likes it and not just for money".

I also got told he refused many contract to sell his right or sell games overseas on consoles like every commercial shit. Like "if he accepted he could have become so ridiculously rich but preferred to protect his art instead".

So I really used to respect and admire him a lot for that.

But lately, I heard this was not true, that he was actually interested by money, and that he even signed some things to make touhou games for playstation and other similar commercial shit.

And even in his late games, you feel so much that he searches money, and tries to "catch american audience" to sell more... *sigh*...
When you look at urban legend in limbo's wreck and some of the characters of th15, you really feel this so much.

I don't know where is the truth in all these things, but it really looks like "the nice ZUN" I thought he was, is not what is right...

I'd like to get your opinions on that, to say if what I said is right or to show me that it's wrong.
I'd actually like to be proved that everything I said was wrong, because I still want to believe it, because I'm one of the oldest fans of the serie and touhou has a very big place in my heart, but sadly, I really think it's the truth...

>I'm one of the oldest fans of the serie and touhou has a very big place in my heart, but sadly, I really think it's the truth...
You don't have to be a fan of ZUN to be a fan of the series. All you have to do is be a fan of the work and/or the community. At some point you mixed celebrity worship into it.

You didn't understand what I tried to say... From what I heard, he owns a brewery/brewpub, so he has enough money to live, so he can "refuse to become a billionnaire" if proposed, in order protect his art.
I never said he was the one who claimed that he did that, I'm not even sure this is true.
I never said he was doing everything for free either, he sells his games and probably already makes a lot of money from it. I just said that "I thought that" he refused to get "even bigger amounts of money" in exchange of his rights, in order "to protect his art". And I was asking more informations over that.

>You don't have to be a fan of ZUN to be a fan of the series. All you have to do is be a fan of the work and/or the community. At some point you mixed celebrity worship into it.
I totally agree, and I'm not "a fan of ZUN", and I wasn't either back then, I just used to admire "the choices I thought he made", and respect him for that as a true artist, but I liked touhou for other reasons.
But the thing is that I really see some changes in the quality of his works too, that's also why I asked all these questions.
And I never worshipped him like some retarded fanboys, and that's why I want to learn the truth about all these things...

And when you say "a fan of the work", okay, but if you say "a fan of the community", I don't agree, because the community (especially the western community) is one of the most awful community I've ever seen.

>> No.14517532

He's said before that he isn't going to permit a official anime because he wants Touhou Project to be known as a doujin series first (there are probably people out there who don't know that Kagerou Days is originally a single Vocaloid PV), and keeps all canon work under tight control. Not sure what's been said other than that.

>the community (especially the western community) is one of the most awful community I've ever seen.
All fanbases are cripplingly retarded, but at least the Japanese secondary community produces work. I don't know if you're one of those people who really fucking hates memes or what, but ZUN doesn't agree; he invited a lot of prominent secondary creators to drink with him at the 20th anniversary stream.

>> No.14517571

Can we still call them secondaries then?
The japanese community is already more authentic and they produce a lot of quality stuff.
You also find some amazing artists in all levels of art, especially drawing/painting and music, that really made my drop my jaws.
And they're also more devoted and passionate in their love.
And they're usually not secondaries, since you need to be well-informed to produce your fan-content.

To me, the true secondaries are from the western community. Actually there is nothing wrong to like fanon, even if some people don't always know the original art, if they're discreet. But these people in the western community are far different and worse than that. And I'm not gonna list all the reasons here, because they're pretty obvious, too numerous, and I don't want to bait them to come to argue here.

Both of you completely misunderstood this. I assume you got this from the Chart of a Strange Creator talk. I'm not going to go into the details of what we know about ZUN's working life at the time, but essentially at his company he was putting in increasing hours of work on things that weren't released and was being pressured increasingly often, all the while being disincentivized by Taito to work on his own projects. You might not be aware, but the salary for programming work in Japan is quite meager. He didn't quit because "Touhou pays better", he quit because he was working a shit job with shit pay and was forced to stop doing one or the other. The reason he could quit Taito at all was because he already knew he was making enough on good releases, and concentrating more on his doujin work ended up being better on all fronts. He quit his job to work on Touhou -precisely- because he wanted to give it his undivided attention and put the work into it that he wanted to but previously couldn't. That's mostly why he stopped working much on the series leading up to when he quit, and why he had an explosion of new activity the period after.

ZUN only sells Touhou in person at conventions like Comiket (by Western standards, an anime con that has a giant Artist's Alley and nothing else), because he likes the sense of community. The games do not have an advertising budget, and spread mainly through word of mouth.

ZUN has contacts in multiple big gaming companies, or has worked for some of them. He has been approached multiple times with offers to turn Touhou into a mainstream multimedia franchise that's sold everywhere from gaming stores to supermarkets, has an anime, is translated into a dozen languages, etc. but has turned down all of them.
The main reason: doing that would take away his creative control. He even said that he didn't want Touhou to have an official English translation because he thought the translators would try to "improve" his work to fit US standards - he has more trust in places like Touhouwiki to keep things faithful.

The main Touhou games don't make ZUN a lot of money. I mean, he's one of the most successful doujin creators around, but doujin is still doujin. Most of his income comes from the spin-off manga, which are published in commercial magazines, or from royalties for figurines and the like. The magazines generally give ZUN a lot of control, to the point where it's joked that some of their publications only exist to have a place to put ZUN's manga in. On legal documents, ZUN's job is "manga writer".

When ZUN was told how much it costs for an American fan to get their hands on one of his games, he was shocked, called this "un-doujin" and said he was flattered you'd go to all that trouble but he'd rather you just pirate it. Shortly afterwards, DDC became officially available on Playism for $15.

That's what I wanted to hear about ZUN.
I heard so many people saying that ZUN is a sell-out, from your point of view this is false, and even if it's just "one person's opinion and it might me false", it makes me happy to read what you wrote.

>DDC became officially available on Playism for $15.
Why did he do this, by the way?
I might looks stupid, but can you explain wait is "Playism"?
At first I misread "Playstation" and I was kinda shocked, but apparently this is something else.

I heard he released playstation games as well, which is at the total opposite to what you just stated, do you have informations about it?

Thanks for the infos.

>But lately, I heard this was not true, that he was actually interested by money, and that he even signed some things to make touhou games for playstation and other similar commercial shit.

As for this...
There's a system that started on Playstation recently called "Play! Doujin", intended to help doujin creators who want to move into commercial game development. Because ZUN is an influential voice in the doujin scene, they approached him for his endorsement, and he gave his permission to some Touhou fangames to take part in the scheme. The fact that ZUN was okay with this was heavily marketed.
Normally ZUN doesn't want Touhou fangames promoted in ways that could distort peoples' impressions of the original work (in /jp/ terms, "don't do stuff that could create secondaries"). However, he decided that since the audience of this scheme consisted entirely of Japanese doujin fans, all of them would know about Touhou already.

"Doujin" sometimes gets translated as "Indie", but it's really more like "Garage". Think the kind of games you'd see on the forums of Game Maker or RPG Maker or whatever, with people asking each other to download them and give feedback.

Most of the games sold at Comiket are basic stuff that's sold dirt-cheap. Basically just enough to cover the circle's travel and printing costs, and maybe buy a few drinks afterwards. Often a circle will fail to sell enough of their stock, and will actually lose money. ZUN could be accused of "selling out" because Touhou is so popular that he's guaranteed a profit, even when selling at low prices. Some peoples' thought processes go "I put twice as much effort into my work as ZUN -> Therefore I should be making twice as much money as ZUN -> I'm not, so ZUN must be cheating".

Also, he writes manga that aren't doujin but are set in the same world as his doujin works, which rubs some purists the wrong way.

Let's not get too crazy.
Impossible Spellcard, which was a spinoff, made him well over $200k.
And that's just the limited copies sold at the event alone, not counting online stores and such.
Then there are royalties he gets from all the figurines and plushes sold.
And then, as you mentioned, are all the mangas and print works.

He even started some shady ghost company, which I forgot the name of.
But basically it was made just to launder all the money he gets from Touhou sources.

Make no mistake, ZUN is swimming in cash.

That's pretty ironic, considering things like the IN translation in the past.

It's just a rumor, mind you, but I heard he released DDC on Playism so he could protect his copywrite in the west, after the "Touhou Smash" bullshit that went down.

I see. I forgot about that and didn't take it into account. Probably more understandable why they freaked out then, but like you said, it had been there a while.

As to all this, I don't really mind that he does it for the money. His love of Touhou regardless has never been in doubt for me. But it's been evident for a while that he was making a living off Touhou, that it was his "job". No one who does two manga, one monthly, and works on the game and makes appearances is going to be able to do so it in his spare time while having to hold down another job.

Maybe because I saw it coming. Once he got married and had a child I had a feeling Touhou would start becoming more of a business to him, something he does because he loves as well as something to support his lifestyle and put food on the table. But it doesn't affect me either way.

Given the choice between continuing to work a thankless, soulless job with long hours for someone else or being my own man with my own product which I know is profitable, I'm taking the latter.

There was a thread here that gave estimates on how much he was making and I'd say he probably does pretty well for himself. I have no doubt he's saved plenty up, but also depends a lot on his salary from manga for month-to-month expenses.

>He even started some shady ghost company, which I forgot the name of.

Kourindou Inc. I think. I wouldn't call it a money-laundering ghost company. It's a legit company, but is used simply to manage his business interests and contracts. It has like three employees that I know of, one of which is ZUN, and two business managers/friends who help him with all the legalese and such. It's smart, not shady.

I believe it was formed after some trademark squatter stole a variation of the Touhou name right out from under him, after which he started to become more wary of the business side of things.

Touhou Smash came after that. Playism came about after he had been thinking for a while about how to modernize and distribute Touhou digitally. He apparently had thought about a few different platforms including Steam but decided on Playism. I think he had been talking about digital since before his America trip.

Well yeah, ZUN's English isn't good enough for him to judge the quality of a translation himself, but he knows the difference between how fans and commercial entities handle things. Marisa's rudeness being translated as "bitch" is pretty tame when you consider the number of official localisations that strip out any religious references or moral ambiguity.

Honestly Playism EN has been pretty bad about the whole "clearly identifying what's the original work and what's a fangame" thing too, and the original page for DDC looked like it had been fed through Google Translate.

From what I understand, ZUN's involvement is mostly concepts, writing, and some music, and then he hands everything over to Tasefro, with him coming after everything is finished and making sure it's alright. From what I understand, the art wes actually even lewder in HM before ZUN figured out what was going on and told them to tone it down. There's a reason the main artist didn't come back for ULiL.

No, some people just started throwing fits because one of HM's artists also drew porn, claiming that this made HM porn by extension.

By which I mean, he didn't use a separate name to draw porn. Because just about every doujin artist has drawn porn at some point - it's both easy money and good anatomy practice.
