JAST does some good work but they delay things for absurdly long times for no reason. I say no reason because they don't provide any explanations for these delays.

Meanwhile, MangaGamer regularly releases things and regularly updates, which are things customers like to see.

This doesn't sound very logical. Rance is popular in the west because most people already played Rance 7, and that's it. The earlier Rance games all have that ancient look about them, which certainly won't win any points in the west, and Rance 7, well... I certainly wouldn't buy it, because I have literally zero desire to ever play it again after having invested so much time already in the past. Others will likely feel the same way.

And as for the new Rance games, they don't strike me as particularly good either gameplay-wise or porn-wise.

>> No.14387007

>>14386983
Rance 03 was pretty good.
Rance IX. Gameplay was meh but the rest was pretty enjoyable.
You really need to have played the earlier games for it though.

But you're basically right. VI is extremely highly rated among the Rance games but it looks old and is a prequel to Sengoku Rance.
The fanbase who can't play VI but really want to play VI are the same guys they just really pissed off.

They can't really release the games in chronological order either because that has difficulties and then some of the other games (like VI which is what people are pissed off about) will be extremely hard to release.

Quest is probably the easiest game to release given it's the direct sequel to Sengoku but they probably won't be able to release it with Magnum and without Magnum, Quest is a pretty mediocre game.

What I do think from what I've seen in Ludo's screenshots is that he's translating literally and I at least tried to make something that flowed in English more smoothly. Maybe he's going to try and fix that in editing though, I don't know. But that my translation may appear to read better in English doesn't necessarily mean that it's a better 'translation.'

The guy translating it was hired by Jast to be their project manager years ago. He is the worst project manager in the world, so every project under him has slowed to a crawl and is plagued by organizational issues, keeping him from finishing his own translation projects. The tradeoff is that translation quality is much higher because of it, and he's almost completely redone a few translations (eg Steins;Gate and Yumina). He's a fantastic translator, but slow, has had no oversight, and can't stay organized. Jast is a side thing to J-List, so Payne doesn't give a shit.

Doddler briefly touched on why JAST was so slow. Basically, some of the translators they got were shit but nobody was paying attention (no QC) until the very last moment and some VNs had to be retranslated. This lack of foresight also applies to whomever they got to fix whatever issues the programs themselves had. If Doddler has the time, I really wish he would help them out somewhat with their backlog of games or maybe just Seinarukana because god knows what the fuck is going on there.

I kind of wish that localizations would capture speech quirks like that. There's characters that say -desu or -ja at the end of every line and it's not captured in the translation. Of course it's impossible to properly localize without just putting the Japanese suffix in there which never fits with the English text. Why do people care so much about censorship in visual novels?
Do people really want to see badly drawn dicks that badly?
Artists barely put effort in drawing things that are going to be censored in japan, so when they get uncensored, they usually are really bad, or even have to be added in by external decensoring.

And why are they censored in japan?
Who knows. All porn in japan has to be censored for whatever reason.

I rather have censored material over not getting it at all because the producers refuse to give the uncensored images while the localizing company refuses to release it censored.

I'm also fine with getting censored material in general because it has no influence on the story, writing, sound and only affects very few images for a very small portion of an image. (unless nukige)

Unless youre reading a visual novel for pictures of dicks, you shouldn't mind censorship.

If you hate censorship so much, become involved in politics in japan.

Also unrelated reminder that choosing not to localize and release something =/= censoring it.... pedos.

>Why do people care so much about censorship in visual novels?
I have no need to compromise the art in order to follow Japanese anti-pornographic laws which don't apply to me in the first place.

Do you really think the Japanese artists would draw things censored if they weren't legally forced to? No they wouldn't, and there's no reason whatsoever for westerners to put up with that either.
By the way, it doesn't matter what kind of content is censored, whether it's (subjectively) "good" or "bad" or how much of it is missing. It isn't even just about VNs. Everything which would exist in the original version if artists were free to express themselves in Japan must be present in the western release.

>I rather have censored material over not getting it at all
It's the very epitome of censorship enablers' logic, those very beggars willing to pay for and eat shit they're offered because they have no pride or dignity. I bet most artists are more than happy to be able to cut corners on the parts that would get covered by mosaic. I am against all sorts of censorship, but visual novels have been made with mosaic in mind, which makes taking them away actually distance them from the original vision. At which point it makes one question if the label censorship is even really applicable to the presence or absence of mosaics at all.

>> No.14391656

Yeah, visual novel genitals look like shit when uncensored, at least the ones we've gotten. Example: Princess Evangile

Meanwhile, we know some H artists can draw very very good looking genitalia, as evidenced by Fakku's uncensored works. So perhaps some future VN will come out with vaginas and penises that arent' just a rod with the occasional vein and a slit, but none of the uncensored stuff now is any good.

>It's the very epitome of censorship enablers' logic, those very beggars willing to pay for and eat shit they're offered because they have no pride or dignity. Congratulations on having no sense of smell and taste, I guess. I'll have my standards instead and I'll keep demanding quality releases even for shit-eaters' sake.
Anyway, I think it's utterly pointless to argue with these types of anti-censorship people. They see only in black and white, and there's never any reconciliation from them.

Youre making it seem like censored = shit.
Why is that the case?
Is it a divine rule or law that says censored material is shit?
No its not. Viewing censored things as inferior is just your opinion.
I actually like seeing censored artwork in H scenes and images.

If in the future, there are options to choose censored vs uncensored cgs, I would choose censored regardless of how well genitals were drawn.

I don't want anti-censorship demanders who will refuse to buy something if its censored ruin the market or deny possible releases by making it seem like the anti-censorship opinion is the superior one.

Anyway, if you're talking about things that interfere with freedom of expression, simple market forces are a much bigger issue than anything else. How many eroge do you see these days not set in a high school, or with anything but 4-6 pure virginal heroines (who must each get their own route), etc.? Not fucking many. Well, you're on the right track, but that'd only be a good if your process is:
>There's a speech quirk
>It can be to be replaced with literally any other speech quirk

Which is unfortunately what a lot of dumbfucks use. See the Steins;Gate random meme replacement fan translation. The desu quirk and valley girl speech characterize in two very different ways. I've seen more commonly for desu overuse of "so", which serves a same purpose as an unneeded emphasizer, although that could just be because the pool of professional translators is pretty small and that's just what one guy likes.

I don't actually think this. Obviously you can't just use any quirk imaginable.
But overuse of "like" or "so" shouldn't be that far off linguistically speaking. Though I admit that there are different associations associated with the given quirks.

But to be fair these associations differ even among English speaking people. Yet the quirks can consist. You can have a quirk in America associated with a certain type or group of people and then have the exact same quirk in Britain be associated with something else. You don't even need to travel overseas. Associations can easily differ from just one region to neighbouring one.

So unless the association is just too strong, one should probably not get so hung up as to not even consider the translation.

Mangagamer has released KnS2, Princess Evangile, No,Thank You!, euphoria, and eden all this year, from scratch translations. These are all longer then any of the doujin things Sekai has put out, and didn't need kickstarters.

Mangagamer is also set up to release Beat Blades Haruka, Tokyo Babel, Yurirei, Myth, Ozmafia, Umineko chapters, and Supipara Ch.1 all next year plus some. Sekai has what? A few decent titles that haven't even begun translation yet, and a bunch of English and Japanese no name doujin things? The only thing of worth they might release next year with any quality is the first Grisaia fandisk.

Sure Clannad is a bigger title name wise, but I'm not going to respect a company that literally added bugs to the fan release and maybe qc'ed it, plus is censoring their negative feedback. I have no idea why anyone would.

Whenever I say something positive about Sekai, I get called a Sekai shill. If there are any other responses, they're either ad hominems or complaints about how evil Sekai is and only someone who hates visual novels would support them (and you should feel bad, you Sekai supporter you). It's much less common that someone replies actually addressing the arguments, and when it does it's followed by a chain of replies that quickly devolves into shit-flinging.

And some social control is indeed necessary. For one, it keeps people out that can't fit in (it's what keeps people from mentioning Katawa Shoujo in a remotely positive light here; the moment you allow that you'll be overrun by newbies that don't even try to pretend they have a clue what they're talking about); at the same time, it reduces the harm blatant trolling (not sure if I can even call it that with the lack of effort and lack of interesting replies) can do. An echo chamber is when information supply reinforces existing beliefs while excluding information that goes against said beliefs. In this case, I think some people's insistence that the Clannad release is based on the fan translation is excellent evidence that these threads cause an echo chamber effect. After the weekly two minute hate against Sekai, some posters just cannot comprehend the possibility of Sekai doing anything positive. On the other hand, I was positively surprised to see that the majority of the posters here accept that the Clannad translation is good, so perhaps the echo chamber here isn't as bad as I suspected.

Partnering with Sakura is free money. Why would you reject it?

People like to buy that shit for no reason, but sales are sales. MG will get money for doing minimal work.

Their editor will be able to easily edit a garbage script to a decent one without putting in much effort get get paid.

WC, under the advertisement of MG, will get more sales to fund more creation of garbage to repeat the endless cycle of free money.

By endless I mean, after a few more cycles, sales will start to drop and they'll try to gain credibility by using the remains of their funds for a final gambit, one that will result in becoming a masterpiece, a revolutionary OELVN kamige.

You're using terms people disagree with, but you're more right than you'd expect. Telling people to piss off, accusing them of morally shady things and calling them names are all forms of social control. When a newbie comes in and says 'I just played Katawa Shoujo and nothing else, recommend me something', you likewise give a negative reaction to prevent that person from joining the group. It's no different. I'm sure a lot of you would actually like me to leave and/or stop saying things that go against the majority opinion here, and aren't responding to me because you really want to hear my opinions on your arguments. By trying to get me to leave, you're attempting to remove opinions you don't want to hear.

It's not true. There are linguistic indicators when people are using a language that is unfamiliar to them. They make mistakes in certain ways that reflect their original language and the way they would naturally express themselves. Impeccable spelling and using the same words as Google Translate are not linguistic indicators for any language but stupidity.
