A significant note I should tell you is that despite all the plethora of fancy Touhou fanart you might've seen so far, the art style by ZUN (the creator) in the original games looks like pic related.

If you look at the playable command we have Reimu the shrine maiden and Marisa the witch.
Both of these characters have many differences and both feels unique.

Then Sakuya gets added, a knife throwing maid which also added more uniqueness to the playable choices.

We now have 3 characters who's all different and unique.

And then Sanea gets added into the game, she's a shrine maiden just like Reimu and honestly does not feel that unique and she's very similar to Reimu , she didn't really add anything new to the playable character at all.

So now we have 2 shrine maidens which both are very similar and a Witch who's more unique.

I feel from a design point of view that it would be better if the third reoccurring playable character would actually stand out more, and not just feel like a clone of one of the characters.

I'm not saying it should have been Sakuya that became the 3'rd reoccurring playable character, but I think it would at least fit much better than another Shrine maiden.

I really don't see your point in brining in that Alice is also a witch, that Sakuya said that incident resolving is not a maids job(and she even became a playable in 14 after saying that) or that Youmu and Reisen once was playable, that has absolutely nothing to do with my point.

I was talking about the reoccurring playable cast here, which Sanae obviously has become.

My point is that it would make more sense to actually add another more unique character as the reoccurring playable character than Sanea because she's just to similar to Reimu, be it Youmu, Reisen, Sakuya or whoever.

Meanwhile Sakuya isn't exactly the wandering type. She was playable in PCB because the seasons were at stake, which is something that could affect her ojou-sama, and it also was a bigger deal than some floating object. And IN is where she simply followed her mistress. In DDC her own objects were manipulated so it was an incident directly affecting her. An UFO high up in the sky is not.

By the way, Sanae isn't actually a Reimu clone. They're both shrine maidens, and... that's it. Their appearance, personality, shot types are all different enough from each other. There's no reason to call her a clone other than "they're both miko's"

That and even for those people, there's only one game where Sanae is the *sole* another playable after Reimu and Marisa - otherwise she shares the spot with Youmu and Reisen respectively, which means the player is usually getting *more* variety with Sanae compared to PCB or DDC.

And unless my nonexistent nipponese is failing me, that was ZUN's intention for Sanae from the moment he created her - his SCoOW comments about Sanae mention that it's easy for him to insert her into pretty much any storyline compared to the likes of Youmu, that she has the role of the more talkative miko compared to Reimu and while she's Reimu rival, she has elements of both Reimu and Marisa in her character (and is way more likable than either, if I may voice my opinion).
