Why is Japan the only place that uses these things? I always put blankets over the vent in my room to imitate it, but it's just not the same. :(

Everywhere else in the world has good centralized heating.

Also it's actually not that rare in America, I literally saw a kotatsu set a few weeks ago at Ikea.

centralized heating is lame as hell

I like the simplicity of a table with just a blanket. I hate dry hot air so I can't stand heaters and shit but wrapping yourself up in a thick blanket is the dream

I don't think you understand how a kotatsu works. It's not just a table with a blanket, anyone can do that anywhere.

There's a heater built into the actual kotatsu, or if you're using a really really old one that your grandmother owns, a pot with burning charcoal.

They didn't always use heaters. The futon basically traps heat so I feel like a heater is too much.

Even before electric heaters they've had a heat source, like the aforementioned charcoal. There were a variety of different method of inducing heat.

炬燵 individual kanji translated to torch feet warmer.

I'm Chinese and in most areas there is no centralized heating in this country. A thick futon IS NOT ENOUGH! Trust me
