Yeah yeah, I know you might get asked this a lot here.
But nontheless even without me every day is a repost day.

I'm looking for some good material to learn japanese, and not only kanji but grammar and basic stuff like kata/hiragana too.

Things I already Have:
DS with flashcard and some homebrew applications for learning kata/hiragana
A Kanji Dictonary by 'Langenscheidt'
and a little book about grammar (picture below, is this any good?)

So fellow /jp/ Anons could recommend me some stuff?

For DS I recommend 0405_-_Kanji_Sonomama_Rakubiki_Jiten_(JP)_(1024M)
you write in the, um, squiggle thingies (kanji) and it translates i\them into romanji

as for the language training I suggest Rosetta Stone.
It's a PC/mac/psp/palm/etc. ap that teaches many many languages
it's a couple gig download or $500ish to buy

OP here, thanks for the answers.

DS App I used to lear hiragana, katakana with:
http://www.zoelen.net/blog/default.asp?Category=10

Nothing fancy but you can learn by column, mixed, romanji, kata alone, hira alone, have pronunciation and also see how they are written.

Other similar programs (at that time were buggy, don't know how the work now)

japanese training;
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=205838

japanese academy:
http://www.projet-ixs.com/post/2007/11/04/apprendre-le-japonais-sur-nintendo-ds

I once had rosseta stone on my disk, but I don't know it felt kinda awkward for example you had 4 pictures and 4 japanese frames.
Ok one showd a car, one a plane, one a loli and one a fat kid on a ball.

Car and plane far enough but what about the fat kid on the ball and the loli?
I mean there isn't written anything in english what it means, you can match the phrases with the picture but how am I supposed t know what it means then?

Does it say fat kid with ball, or kid playing with ball or kid with ball or what?
Well maybe I did somethign wrong, nvm.

How about other useful programs for PC?
They only one I have right now is JWPce

>A Kanji Dictonary by 'Langenscheidt'
Where the hell do I get this? (And by the way, if you could tell where you got the grammar book/the ISBN to both, that would be fine too)

Langenscheidt has by far the best dictionaries I've ever used but I didn't know they had kanji-dictionary.

Also, which part of Germany do you live in? I read some time ago about intesive oriental language courses (japanese, chinese, corean) which teach you in 2 weeks what would normally take 2 years.
I could look it up for you (I'm stuck in Spain, and I tell you, shit's awful and overpriced. I want to go back to Germany as fast as I can to get proper classes).

By the way, I also recommend you the langenscheidt "Universal-Wörterbuch Japanisch" minidictionary (A6 size). It's a pretty basic yet complete german-japanese/japanese-german vocabulary which covers the most basic words you'd want to express if you happen to be in Japan.

Don't learn Japanese unless you intend to use it seriously. The first mistake weeaboos make is beginning to learn Japanese to understand anime and games and shit. That's a good way to fail. All weeaboos start out with delusions of grandeur, only to fail because they're too stupid to remember more than 10 kana. (That's a hyperbole. Don't respond saying you know more than 10 kana because congratulations you're still dumber than a kindergartener.)

tl;dr You will fail because you aren't actively using it.

mp;s=books&qid=1223561442&sr=8-1

Well it's not exactly a dictionary, but ther IS a langenscheidt kanji dictionary available. I have this book: ISBN 978-3-468-49388-1

Also I'm living in austria, classes here are pretty much limited.

You don't understand. I need these feedbacks, because if I think about all the people who are trying so hard to learn Japanese and are really giving it their all, then that inspires me to work hard myself!

Also, if I find out that I've helped someone in their quest, well...then...that makes me feel less useless.

Do you understand?

While it's true that a lot of people who start learning Japanese quit after they've learned all the hiragana and katakana and are asked to remember Kanji on top of grammar and vocabulary, it still beats fapping to porn all day(and let's be honest, that's pretty much all that Anon does).

Your argument that you should not be learning a language unless you "actively" use is invalid though (especially since you excluded anime and games as active usage of the language). English is my 2nd language and I've never had to "actively" use it once outside of my classroom and I still speak it pretty fluently because of all the American TV I watch/books I read.

on topic: Currently I'm using Genki I+II as well as the workbooks for reading/writing and basic grammar. On top of that I got Barron's Japanese Grammar to read up on some more grammar that Genki didn't cover or I didn't understand. As for speaking and listening comprehension I'm using Pmsleur Japanese 1-3.
I'm not currently attending any Japanese classes and I'm planning on keeping up my self study until I finish Genki 2 (equivalent of JLPT Level 3).
Don't kid yourself though, it's a shit ton of work and it sucks up a lot of time unless you want to move forward at a snail's pace

Nice post! I'd also like to add that even if you don't have access to a Japanese tutor, friends, classes, etc you CAN still make progress learning Japanese!

If you go the Genki route, be sure to purchase the 2-disc student cd sets that accompany the textbook/workbook.

Also, before you set out on Genki, I'd recommend both learning the Kana in advance (Japanese for Busy People, Kana workbook is a good resource if you got monies to blow) AS WELL AS completing the first section of Tae Kim's "Japanese Guide to Japanese Grammar" (www.guidetojapanese.org).

Here's a good study plan:
1. Start Heisig's "Remembering the Kanji" and use the the "Reviewing the Kanji" website for easy-breezy memorization.
2. Learn the kana with the Japanese for Busy People Kana Workbook (but I wouldn't recommend the textbook series which is mega gay and worthless)
3. After the kana is memorized, purchase a product on Amazon called "Pronounce it Perfectly: Japanese". It's old, so you'll have to buy it used. It comes with 2 cassette tapes. Japanese is not that hard to pronounce -besides getting the intonation correct- but completing this pronunciation course will give you confidence that you can actually produce the sounds of japanese accurately, ever without being in a classroom setting!
4. Study www.guidetojapanese.org and complete up to and including the first chapter under the "essential grammar header (Polite Form and Verb Stems (~です、~ます). At this point I'd recommend moving on to Genki.

>> No.1433355

>>1433351

...continued...

5. Study Genki 1 and 2, and also complete the rest of Tae Kim's grammar tutorial, as well as purchase another grammar text used off amazon called "Japanese Communication Strategies" by Senko K. Maynard! It's a brilliant and clear and non-linguistic pratical grammar text that is super duper awesome for learning Japanese. Fuck, i wish their was an equivalent book for Mandarin.....
6. After Genki, purchase Integrated Intermediate Japanese w/ the accompanying CDs
7. Turn into Shinji Ikari and be like me!

Hey, sorry for the long post! I hope this helps you. Also, if anyone could make a similar study list for Chinese, that would be awesome.

Take care!

What is a good book for grammar?

I wanted to see if OP's grammar book might be good but amazon's reviewing system sucks balls.

Looks like the kind of book I'm looking for.

I want some actual linguistics in the book so I can compare it to the grammar in german, spanish, english, etc. and find the equivalent grammatical formulae in japanese. I know nobody normally does that but that's because they don't know what "auxiliary verb", "genetiv" or "spacial complement" is in the first place.
