I have a very close Japanese friend that can confirm this, and I've seen it with my own eyes.

My experience with living in Japan was kinda bad.
What happened every day is I walked down the street lookin' normal, acting normal, speaking pretty flawless Japanese. I'd get stared at in a pretty judgemental way.
Whenever I stroke up conversation with random people such as asking where X is people would always start speaking in extremely broken English or just downright say they don't speak English although I spoke Japanese
Old people were the ones I had the most trouble with though.
Another thing was, as I was walking around Shibuya, some people would give out free samples or even just flyers and stuff like that. I have never once got anything from anybody.
All the restaurants that had English menus automatically gave me one.
Another thing that happened is gettin' made fun of by teenagers as I was walking past them for just being white.
The only positive part about being there was that everyone was more quiet and polite, especially on trains.
And of course, some women nearly worshiped me and were practically begging for my cock. Others were scared of me because I'm tall, buff and have a buzz cut

All I want to do is visit japan, hangout with some jap who are excited about movies or anime and want to let me chill with them to lounge around and watch a bunch of stuff they love and want to share. Maybe video games too. ..

Speaking as an American who's lived in several different countries, this stuff is true in EVERY country, it's just if they say it directly or not that's the difference. No one likes foreigners, no one likes anyone who looks or sounds different than them, no country wants poor immigrants, everyone talks behind everyone else's backs, no one really wants to patiently teach you their language... A few people think you're fucking awesome and use you as language practise or whatever, but the friendship is super shallow (if it's even friendship to begin with) and it all gets very annoying because you just want to be normal. When you get close to fluent you can talk about anything but due to your different, foreign experiences, your opinions are often different which again makes you an outcast. But you probably don't even fit in in your home country so you're destined to being a weirdo for the rest of your life no matter where you go.

Then, ignoring all that, you're still lacking in "common knowlege" that everyone else in the country knows (how products work, where a place is, who famous people are, nostalgic childhood stuff) and people don't usually realize this is cultural, they just think it's simply you being an idiot. It's just how it is. You just find 1-2 friends who treat you normally and be content with that. I hate seeing people act as if this stuff is unique to Japan, it's really not.

While I'm not the guy you're quoting, I'd have to say that it's actually worse in Japan due to their culture and language. A lot of stuff you say is valid, but Western languages (and countries) to a large degree share the same mannerisms, where Japan does not. For example, even smiling or laughing to show you're being polite or trying to demonstrate you're having a good time, will more often than not come off to a Japanese person as condescending, like you're making fun of them. Japanese people even have difficulties making friends with each other, and it's not uncommon to see best friends together for years split up or learn that they never liked each other to begin with.

All in all, I think Japan's very good at maintaining its image. People think it's safe, when it's nowhere as safe as they make it sound. People think the girls are cute, when the average Japanese girl probably isn't that great. And people think it's easy to pick up chicks, when it's really not an express ticket to get laid. I think this is what annoys most people (including me) who have been to Japan for more than a couple months, have talked to more than 100 people in Japanese, and don't worship anime. It's really not a magical place, and in a lot of respects, it's not a great place to find a really good girlfriend/wife or a good job.

It's really weird. Parts of Tokyo are filled with people straight up from the worse parts of Africa. There's sections of Roppongi known for their scams and aggressive business tactics (literally forcing people to buy shit). Yet in other parts of the country, you see Japanese people run down by police for looking Korean (serious racial profiling) and being harassed for their papers. I witnessed this in person. As an American who moved to Japan 10 years ago and is enjoying it very much, let me warn you that people in America also talk about you behind your back if you are not normal. I don't think there's much of a difference. You just have to learn not to care.

As for working hours, I can't really say because I've only ever worked in Japan, but of course the word is that Japan works people harder and I'm sure that's true. The thing is, even if you're working less overtime in America than you would be here, the fact remains that you are still spending the vast majority of your free time working. The only way to make that situation acceptable in my opinion is to get a job that you somewhat enjoy, which I have done. With an enjoyable job, overtime and so forth becomes less of an issue. With a job you dislike, I really don't see the point in living unless you literally only have to work like one or two days a week or something.

Of course there are some people who prefer to separate their hobbies from their work, and somehow manage to still enjoy their lives even though they are working a job they dislike 5 days a week. I never understood that way of thinking though.

Well, we met because I had started learning Japanese and decided to do some language exchange. I was the first person she talked to and we started having regular conversations.

I have done this many times with other girls, some of them got more intimate with me because of the way I am but I had never felt any real connection with them.

We have been together for a while and this week she decided that she was not going to wait until mid 2016 and she's quitting her job in January and coming here in February. She said she will bring me with her even if she has to stay 3 months and wait until I can get a spouse visa.

When you really get to know someone, you often find that your preconceived notions were wrong. I think it's the same when someone who originally rejected you without talking to you will feel. That person will see how nice you are, how good your abilities are, and how you're like everyone else.

I have worked as manual labor in a factory in Japan and for me it was pretty ok. The only problem with that is that you are an easy replaceable worker so if things go to shit you will be the first to be fired but usually there is a lack of workers so not only you get a job but also you can do overtime for extra bucks.
