What's the easiest Touhou? I want to 1CC them all on normal (yes, casual newfag) and only beat TH10 so far because I started with it and played it a lot. I practised with Perfect Cherry Blossom.
1cc it on normal, then play the extra stage, then play the phantasm stage. It's a quite good difficulty curve, and finally beating the phantasm stage at the end feels really good.

All other touhou games should be rather easy to 1cc on normal after that.

Figured this is as good a thread to post this as any. But a review I wrote for TH15 was published earlier today and I wanted to share with you guys and ask for your opinion:

http://www.sumthing.com/blog/the-moon-as-seen-through-lunatic-eyes-legacy-of-lunatic-kingdom/

I know I made a couple factual errors, such as saying that Reisen wasn't playable in a mainline game until LoLK (I completely forgot she was in PoFV) and using the literal translation for stage 1's song, as opposed to the official one. But everything else should be more or less correct. I'd appreciate some feedback.

The style is enjoyable, but you went on to describe the entire playthrough in detail, while actually leaving out the Extra stage. The description was a little bit too elaborate for me; I was hoping the article would contain only the highlights of the gameplay and would have more "side info" and impressions, so as to be interesting to someone who has already played the game. Still, a solid and passionate article.

Decided to write a long reply, but this long reply is stupidly long. At this length, this is basically more of a diary entry for myself, but... might as well post it here, since that's why I began writing this. If anyone cares, enjoy the read.

I've long been aware of Touhou, but only started playing this August. I have been clearing the games in their chronological order in order to appreciate the story in full (such as there is to tell). My experiences are as follows:

1. Embodiment of Scarlet Devil - my first game, so I couldn't compare it with any previous experiences, and took everything for granted. It took me two weeks of everyday practice to do my first 1cc: first I became familiar with the gameplay to the point that I could comfortably dodge all of Meiling's danmaku on Normal (week one), and the rest was, to be honest, mostly a matter of becoming used to Sakuya's knives and time stop mechanic that was breaking my flow; but I also had to practise surviving Remilia's gimmicky spell cards for some time. At that point I felt like I had abused the practice mode long enough; and so I proceeded to run through the entire game more or less comfortably with the standard amount of starting lives, never bombing before Remilia because relatively purist as I am, I was taking no chances with so few lives remaining and because I was increasingly having the feeling that it was well past time I was done with this damned game and the Scarlet Mansion, and wanted badly to move on and see the rest of Touhou.

(cont.)

>> No.14164941

>>14164932
(continued from above)

Seeing (as well as getting to) the ending (as ReimuA) was more satisfying than possibly anything I had gotten from a game before and gave me full closure, as light-hearted and stupidly cute as the ending was. In the end, I had developed a sense of intimate familiarty with the cast of EoSD, and a yet more special connection with Reimu as my "avatar" with which to traverse and feel the world of Gensokyo. I decided not to bother with the newly unlocked extra stage however, because I really couldn't wait to move on. I watched a replay of the extra stage being cleared by a Marisa player to compensate.

2. Perfect Cherry Blossom - my second game, which I finished in two weeks, but completely. Among the first impressions, I was amazed with how smooth and polished the game felt after EoSD. The controls felt especially responsive and pleasant, and the dot finally made me confident about my micro-dodging (that is, until Youmu's entrance...). The strongly Japanese theme as opposed to EoSD's faux Western motif served to, suddenly, really make the name "The East" (Touhou) strike home like you had never expected it before. I was also pleased to see Sakuya playable, although I, of course, chose Reimu. Overall, this installment of the series just instantly clicked with me. Despite the improved controls however, Youmu gave me grievance with her slo-mo spell cards, to which, combined with my initial attempts to beat the game on Hard before I decided I wasn't quite ready for that, I spent the better part of the first week shamefully dying before I suddenly (as always) really did grasp how it was done. Getting past Youmu was worth it, as I got to meet Yuyuko. Somehow, ZUN managed perfectly to make her danmaku as sweet and carefree as Lady Yuyuko herself, while not being particularly easy. It was a true enjoyment. ...well, this write-up is getting unnecessarily long.

I loved all the characters really, each in their own way. I saw that the next game, Imperishable Night, had Reimu paired with Yukari, so I resolved to beat the Extra and Phantasm stages of PCB before starting IN. The stages were challenging yet wonderful, and I developed a special attachment to Yukari from there on. I finally felt qualified to start Imperishable Night with two of my very favourite touhous.

3. Imperishable Night - my third game. I was happy to see Yukari on my screen, though I at first found it somewhat difficult to dodge with her. The game is actually stupidly easy to clear with bombs, but with the way I went about 1cc'ing it, I had to abandon playing on Hard for the second time because playing it perfectly on Normal was enough trouble for me. Even so, after a week, I made both successful clears of Finals A and B, which were almost perfect but I failed both Hourai Elixir and Kaguya's last words. I think it was good enough for the moment, as I later captured them individually in spell practice. I'll return to this game someday and really do a flawless 1cc, and hopefully finally not on Normal, although to be honest I do not feel strongly about ramping up the difficulty for its own sake. Most importantly, pic related represents my overall feelings after beating IN.

4. Phantasmagoria of Flower View - I did not really expect the game to look like that. Well, I just, kinda, started it on Normal just to see, and ended up making it up to Eiki Shiki and beating her as well. I think this game has merit, and it would be interesting to explore later all the characters' story lines. I also met Aya for the first time there. However, I decided to move on to MoF and save PoFV for later.

(cont.)

>> No.14164952

>>14164948
(continued from above)

5. Mountain of Faith - started yesterday, so no 1cc yet. Seeing the new engine is exciting, and the story looks particularly solid and interesting to me. I was excited to meet Sanae for the first time. I hope to beat Kanako soon, but I have not as much time for touhou as I would like now. I also miss Yukari in the character selection screen somewhat, even though she isn't really needed... Overall, fresh and exciting! I love it.

Side mentions:

Immaterial and Missing Power - I tried, because it's in the chronology, partially for Suika the Japanese goblin, and because I actually liked the game after I tried it, even if I turned out to be so bad at fighting games I decided to watch a playthrough on youtube instead, after I died to Youmu. Someday, when I'm done with the danmaku games, I'll return to IaMP and do it myself.

Fairy Wars - somewhere when I was taking a break between Ran and Yukari in PCB. The game turned out to be much harder than I expected, but then I didn't even try to start it on Normal and went for Hard, in accordance with Cirno's personality. I would have sat down and cleared it on another day, but the game was proving to be rather gimmicky, and I couldn't really wait to start PCB's Phantasm anymore and meet the enigmatic Yukari, so I left my progress in Fairy Wars frozen for the time being.

Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom - finished Normal on pointdevice mode in one day between PCB's 1cc and first extra, as Reimu, so as not to be out of touch with the latest hot topic, and because it's such a great game, to be honest. Amazing soundtrack, amazingly delivered personalities, most sophisticated engine, etc. I've got all sorts of praise. I have a soft spot for Junko now, and I actually like Clownpiece. I am not sure how to feel about pointdevice on Normal, though... I'll try Lunatic eventually, I hope. Once again, the game is simply beautiful.

The future holds the rest.

If it's not that... well... I was actually afraid of arcade type games for the longest time, but my love of the outward expressions won me over, so I headed straight into action as soon as I realised that I needed to know more. I still haven't managed a single 1cc on Hard, so I possess more determination than skill, and lots of free time until very recently. I am honoured to be considered skilled, though...

EoSD - Lunatic
PCB - Lunatic
IN - Hard
PoFV - Normal
MoF - Hard
SA - Normal
UFO - Normal
TD - Hard
DDC - Normal
LoLK - Normal

I haven't been very motivated to play the newer games (post SA), although I'm not sure if it's the newer games being more difficult or the fact that I just have no motivation to practice them. As for SA, Orin is just impossible for me. I once reached her with 7 or 8 lives and started stage 6 with 1.

That fucking cat, one more time etc.

Go to left, stream, go to right, stream. That's a giveaway card.

That fucking knife noncard on the other hand is worse than Merlin's opener.

6-11 on hard and their extras, 12 on normal. Currently doing 13 on hard and 6 on lunatic but I haven't touched either in weeks.

I don't think anything in PCB is worse than Merlin's opener.

Is Kanako really supposed to be that difficult on Normal? It's been hours and I still haven't figured out how to dodge her knives reliably without bombing the whole spell card. I mean, this is coming from the same man who had no problem with EoSD's Sakuya.

I appreciate the encouragement, but dear anon, you're too kind. I know enough to recognise that you need to be born with it. If I wasn't so entranced with the world of Gensokyo, I would have long quit.

You have to start from one corner, then move your way to another corner as the knives are flying at you. You have to do it quickly though or you'll get trapped by the storm of knives. This has always worked for me.

Why can't I become consistantly good? I've played touhou for over 100hours total, specifically TH06 only about 15hours this week and I still can't 1CC anything at normal. Yesterday I almost had it(had 3lives for the final boss but fucked up because of stress), but I somehow still lose 1-2 lives against Cirno today. Everything on normal seems easy but I still fuck up and run into bullets.Fuck these games

I'll agree with that other anon, this is definitely your problem. Try to take a little rest until you fully cool down and then come back. Making yourself get worked up is just going to make you a worse player.

I hate myself for being unable to concentrate in the critical moments. It it's going too easily I stop focusing and die stupidly, if I die stupidly I can't focus anymore because I'm too pissed, and in the end end I can't concentrate when I need to because of pressure. My psychology really is fucking me up.

On another note, how do I deal with that spellcard and kill her fast with Reimu B? This is stupid, I have no trouble surviving it anymore but sometimes for some reason I can't even kill her in time and don't get the extra life. I just lost 2 lives because I rushed dangerously at the end to kill her, but I still failed and got no bonus, fucked up my entire run

It's ok anon. I was like you once. I remember back when I was first trying to 1CC SA I would get so nervous during Satori's Border of Wave and Particle that I would be physically shaking. Just persevere and it should eventually go away.

As for that spellcard it's simple streaming, but I don't think there is a way to do it quickly as Reimu B. Sakuya only has the one set of movements that she repeats so you just have to anticipate them. Forgive the terrible quality, I'm not very good at makgin webms.
