All you miss out on characterization by not playing the games are the intangible character traits that are conveyed through danmaku. Granted, this is assuming you're doing your research (and watching the endings against ZUN's requests).

On the whole of it I don't actually care, though. To begin with Touhou Project is a bastardized Japanese mythology fanfiction and if people want to make fanfiction of fanfiction of fanfiction I don't actually care.

I don't typically have a problem with the fanon interpretation of characters. Honestly, if you hang out in the touhou community you'll be so saturated in it that the cannon aspects are overpowered. Case and point I'm pretty sure Alice is actually being kinda a bitch.

As an artist I tend not to draw things I'm not familiar with firsthand. Except for requests where people describe what they want.
I've never really encountered artists who draw doujins or 'plot-heavy' fanart without knowing being into a franchise.

What I DID encounter were female cosplayers who wouldn't know the character they were cosplaying.

There was this one doujinshi that irritated me way too much, it was about Alice considering the possibility of using Hourai elixir on Marisa to not worry about age.
Not only was she making light of the elixir, but it was Alice, the same person who saw Mokou as the walking dead with her truesight, would inflict the same fate on someone.

Unless you don't like rape, what you really want are longer, better stories and situations where it actually makes sense. That's setting the bar too high. Besides the usual instant rape tricks, blackmail, and one girl beating another and having her raped, there's not much else that can work in the usual 12-26 pages without taking away from the rape time.
At least there's a canon excuse to instantly disable certain youkai.

Well, most of the time artists take the main trait of the characters and apply it on their stories, same trait that is the base for fandom representation of the character.

I like when other (unnamed, non canon) youkai (of the same group as existing youkai) show up, but it mostly seems limited to other Tengu and rarely random fairies. There should be other rabbits and kappa doujinshi too. By which I mean groups, along with actual characters.

I don't see why you wouldn't want to use quick reply, unless you haven't set it up correctly. They fixed all of the problems of the old captcha and it doesn't eat all of your memory. Use persistent reply and force posts to wrap.

Well, the average gensokyo human is canonically "stronger" than the average youkai, so it would work on the lesser touhous, e.g. the ones in the idiot group.

Youkai also have lots of weaknesses and danmaku is meant to be equally accessible to anyone, so it's not like they can't seal their powers if they know how to fight the particular youkai. Even vampires or oni can be pacified if you threaten to cover them in garlic or beans.

It depends on the doujinshi, if it's a comedy one I couldn't care less because that's their main point, making you laugh with a story that as a Touhou coat of paint on it.

If it's something that wants to be taken seriously but still a "what if these characters would be like that?" scenario then it's still fine, but I won't read that story though since they're all crap.

In other words it's all fine unless the main objective of the story is to portray the actual Gensokyo. Hemo did a nice job with that one Touhoumon game for example.

The main point of the doujin "industry" is to take some franchise as a base and put a "what if" twist to it, so I can't really get mad if people do that.
