I have N2 plus Bachelor's in Japanese. Working on my Master's now, will be spending a year in Japan and plan on getting N1 there. I'll show you my fancy student card once I get it, if this thread is still alive.

Also note this >>14086919, JLPT only tests passive knowlege. Well, personally I believe being in Japan for a year will be a good way how to raise my active abilities too, so I feel covered.

And to be fully fair to people from /a/ or /jp/, most of them probably only study Japanese for the sake of reading VNs/LNs or something like that, so they don't really care about active knowledge. But I do share your distaste for people who use text hookers nonstop and act like they know Japanese. VNDB forums, Fuwa or Reddit is full of such "heroes". I firmly believe one should first learn Japanese well and only then start actively consuming its media.

I wonder if all this time on the /jp/ would be better spent actually reading and listening to Japanese, and spending more time learning Japanese.

Hell, it's been nearly a year and I haven't even completed basic hiragana. I've literally - in the dictionary sense of the word - used 99% of the time I would have used to study Japanese shitposting on /jp/.

I'm even supposed to be working now of work that several rich women are paying me to do, but I even have no willingness to do that, even though I'm receiving lots of money. I just want to take it easy all day and shitpost on the jay about how I really, REALLY want to fuck star sexual.

I wonder what would happen to me if I stopped going on 4chan. Hell, I wonder if my life would be better if I stopped using the internet for leisure. Whenever I try to quit, I come back because I can't find anything to replace 4chan and feel uncomfortable outside of my timesink.

But it's just plain messed to know that /jp/ was the website that introduced me to Touhou, and yet I've had most of WaHH, FS, and most of the other printworks in my backlog since 2013 because I've been too comfortable in my shitposting rut to do anything else.

The real question is what you'll do with the Japanese once you've learned it. I pretty much only use my Japanese to listen to character songs and read Pixiv comics (with a dictionary on hand) because I don't actually care about eroge.

It really won't improve your shitposting life, though. The actual reason I learned Japanese is probably because /jp/ said I should, but even after you learn it, unless you want to spend all your time shitposting at people in VN or AKB general there's not that many people to talk about untranslated shit with you.

I had a lot of fun back in the day shitting around with Touhou secondaries but these days I feel like all I can find is primary autists and fetishists. If you ever actually feel like learning then it's not a bad idea or anything but it's not like the world will magically open up if you do (unless there's something you really want to read, and given that you spend all your time shitposting that's probably not the case).

I am currently taking Introductory Mandarin in university. Half the class dropped in the first day because the teacher will only speak Mandarin in class. It really is necessary for native English speakers, as getting all the pronunciations and tones right is not nearly as inherent as Japanese tends to be.

I can read Japanese well enough with a dictionary, but I was self taught.
