I don't blame MangaGamer for choosing BBH over a Rance game (in fact, I don't care about either). What bothers me is how they played the 'buy our shitty games and we'll bring you better games, we can't get you the good games directly unfortunately' card once again, and this time we have proof it's bullshit. They intentionally went for BBH instead of Rance, then lied to the community about being forced to take BBH while they really totally wanted to do Rance immediately. We have to buy their games, otherwise Rance is truly impossible for them!

You guys keep complaining about how Dovac lies to customers, but how is this any better? Or is it okay this time because it's MangaGamer and MG totally is doing everything for our best interests and not just because they're a company trying to make money?

Here's the thing. Even if the Fate/stay night translation had better writing (as the translation itself is solid), people would still be moronic about it regardless of that. Of this I'm certain. People are just completely stupid about anything that's popular, even if it is a genuinely good thing. You can see this pretty clearly with their reaction to the Ufotable anime adaptation, which also had no real problems with its translation. You have idiots calling it fucking Naruto just because someone dares to like it. They don't care about translation quality. They care that it's popular so they've decided to find anything that they can portray as a flaw. Incidentally, Attack on Titan's manga translation really is shit and I wish the person doing it would get taken out so someone better can take over.

Grinding with Anki plus eroge erryday. Same way as most people here, I'd guess. Started with Tae Kim, then read easy moege while grinding some basic vocab so reading things wouldn't take thousands of years. Did some kanji, mainly to learn how to differentiate them. More vocab. I probably spent more time with Anki than I should have, but whatever.

Anyway, the important part is to just read tons of shit to familiarize yourself with the language. I used Furigana Inserter to look up vocab, and Google for grammatical constructions. As soon as you think you can handle it, get some J-J dictionaries. I use Daijirin with Rikaisama for quick lookup, and dictionary.goo.ne.jp where that fails. You can ask questions in #tanoshimi (where you might even get an answer) or some other place where Japanese speakers hang out.

Nice 'literally', Dickens. Maybe I'll get to pick up on your grand moral high-mindedness, where someone who (probably) hasn't experienced homelessness, or an inescapable abusive relationship, or a suicide of a close friend, or real hunger, or addiction, or an unhappy family life, who would decide for everyone everywhere that having every need of every human met is a bad thing because you're too simple-minded to see the world as anything but this black-and-white Zoroastrian mythos where every joy must have a price paid in suffering. I admit (again) that Huxley is not a scientist or a sociologist. What if, in such a society, education was revered as a virtue? Imagine these people versed in Shakespeare and Thoreau, worldly and well-traveled and consciously choosing to support a society that works out so well for so many. I mean lordy it's like you've got this Stockholm syndrome for your own first-world-problem existence. 'Going through the motions'? Do you know how many human beings live in slavery right now? One in every 250 people live with 'going through the motions' and you would refuse them a world without beatings and dehumanizing conditions because you don't want them to 'seek pleasure instead of meaning.' What the hell does that mean? That's supposed to be an ultimatum? Why the hell not both? Meaning is one of the greatest pleasures!

I'm going to feel bad about it, but I cannot justify the expense of the game for what it offers me. It is not going to deliver what I want at the rather large price point.

Pygmallion, Tokyo Babel, Yurirei, Myth, House in Fata Morgana, Himawari-- all of these actually still do not offer that kind of value to me. But I will buy them because they are close enough where I want to reward the direction and invest.

I feel like there is just such a gulf in cultural ideas about pricing for these mediums. I think Muv Luv Alternative is worth $60. I think Cross Channel is worth $40. I think Comyu is worth $30. I think Majikoi is worth $20 (+10 per each new arc).

I cannot buy Cartagra or EF at their prices. It's just not enough quality to price ratio for me. It's like WEE. I pirated WEE. Still have only played up to the OP movie and then was too bored. It's not as good as its price.

Himawari tells a tale of love, tragedy, and sacrifice played out on two stages – Earth, and outer space. Enter Hinata Youichi, a young high school student and sole survivor of a tragic spaceplane crash that robbed him of both his family and memories roughly two years prior. Amnesiac but steady in his new life, Youichi manages to find solace in surrounding himself with friends: Amamiya Ginga, the eccentric son of a world-famous astronaut, as well as the tomboyish, yet ultimately kind-hearted quasi-childhood friend, Saionji Asuka. Everything changes, however, when an unidentified object crash-lands in Youichi’s hometown and he meets Aries, a mysterious – and similarly amnesiac – young girl from outer space. Who is Aries? What happened on that fateful day two years ago? And what secrets lurk behind the accident that turned Youichi’s life upside down?

Explore Youichi’s struggle in coming to terms with his lost memories while an entirely different story is revealed to have taken place far beyond the clouds, in the chilling void of outer space. What starts out as a young man’s light-hearted high-school adventure soon takes a more serious turn as both Youichi and the reader are led to face a sobering revelation: that not everything is as it seems at first glance.

You made the same mistake as this guy on the MangaGamer forum who called it a "no-name lolige" who we always laugh at. That is the art style of the first version of the game, back when it was some old PC indie game. Look at this site for a real taste of it:
http://mangagamer.org/himawari/

Though in any case it is still misleading, yes. Himawari is an extraordinary well-loved "real deal" game in Japan. It's famous for having tricked people into thinking it's about little girls and then they play it and it's actually a realistic hard sci-fi story that teaches you a lot about science.

But Sca-ji likes to sparsely throw in less common words or archaic words like 剰え, 何時ぞや or さぞかし. These three I didn't know and had to look up.

And he also uses the vagueness capabilities of Japanese to great extent, so even if Sakura no Uta is easy to read as far as grammar and vocabulary, you need to be experienced in how Japanese works on the contextual level to understand it.

Cartagra sold in 11th place last year, out of the games of that year + 2 or 3 games from the previous year. Cartagra took a lot more resources and time and probably money to get out then a lot of their other titles in that list. Even if it seemed to do well to us does not make it a success to MG.

What Doddler is more likely complaining about is more how he wishes that good story titles like Cartagra wouldn't lose to 7 nukige, a fandisc, and a bad indie RPG game. Story titles just don't look like a good idea when those are their top sellers.

>> No.14104926

>>14101598

Cartagra did somewhere in the neighborhood of a thousand sales, you can see that by comparing the order numbers and seeing that there was about 1500 orders during it's release window and accounting for the fact that there was a major sale and other games eating into that number, and also that it hasn't been on the charts at all since late 2014 means it's sales were frontloaded.

A thousand sales for mangagamer isn't really horrible, it's just average. One of their squirted out nukige can hit that. Infact, if you look at the top ten sales for that year, you'll see several handily beat cartagra.

It's more that there's an opportunity cost associated with pursuing something like cartagra over the classics like "Hypno-training My Mother and Sister". Why invest those money and resources when you could instead put that into something that'll sell the same for half the effort?

I think the concept of story porn games is just dumb. (Not to be confused with porn story games, which is good).

When there is very little porn spaced out by a serious story, the porn is just in the way. It also prevents the game from being marketed to people not interested in porn.

Meanwhile porn games are easy to market on porn sites because people who want porn will see the marketing. But these who want porn will not go for the story based games.

The guy is not too far off on the idea to butcher the title with removed porn and sell on Steam with an unofficial uncensor patch. Because weirdly enough it is attractive to buy a story focused game with porn in it, if you had to patch it back in. Since you are fighting Steams censorship, showing you are in control and all that. You probably didn't want the porn in the game to begin with.

The issue here is that in Japan porn is a plus, yet overseas it is a minus. So if they want to mainstream these titles in the west they have no choice but getting rid of the porn. Pick the small yet loyal niche audience, or the large dregs of steam. Quality versus quantity. However, the eroge core audience is full of pirates, so it's more profitable to cater to the latter (see Sekai Project). The only reason MG and JAST are so stubborn about keeping the porn somehow is because their managers are eroge fans themselves. But soon enough they will have to follow the money as well.

This audience is growing in a much faster way thanks to Steam. And just before anyone brings this up, I'm not talking about the Steam userbase that buys the non-adult version.

>But soon enough they will have to follow the money as well.
I disagree. Refer to what I said above. Since the market is growing bigger, there's even less reason to stop localizing VNs with sexual content. Even SP has another brand to release adult versions of VNs. Releasing a version with sexual content and other without it is the way to go. No one should complain about censorship and you even make other people aware of the more niche market. No one loses this way.

Most of the west is prejudiced against sexual content and it's difficult to overcome those prejudices. I believe this is a big part of the reason why the market grows so slowly.

Is it just that Steam thinks their games are so shit that they have to prove people want the games each time? Is this how Steam tries to stop the flood of awful games, but fails?

VN newbro here, maybe someone can help me find some nice works.

Grisaia no kajitsu
Chiru chiru michiru
Sakura series
i've already hoshizora no memoria installed, but the idea of reading the VN x-times to get to best girl is making me sick.

I kinda look more for nice artwork. I played with the though of playing fate/stay night, but dropped it when i saw the 50+ hours on vndb. If the artwork isn't appealing, the only thing left is the novel part, and with only that i can read a book and fill in the visual part myself.

What i look forward to is the end of the grisaia trilogy and that sonohana 11 gets a translation.

To be fair everything you say sounds like a massive troll opinion. The whole point of a visual novel is the reading part. And then to have only tried the Sakura series? How does that appeal to you but none of this other fantastic stuff does? The art isn't even anything special in those games.

>> No.14110674

>>14110664
Grisaia is also 50+ hours so the implication is that he was okay with that because of the art but not Fate/stay night. Which is bullshit because Fate/stay night has very good art.

Umineko I understand because the PS3 art is shit and the PC art has a very specific appeal, but goddamn, anyone who skips that is missing out on such a good story. I hope MangaGamer's Steam release is enough to interest people.

maybe for you, But if it's the 'whole' part, than there is no difference to an e-book.
>And then to have only tried the Sakura series?
Short, plain, high res pantsu
But i played grisaia and i liked the comedy, how the story was set up, cute girls and healthy sex jokes.

And how is that a bad thing? Reading is good.

I understand you more now though, and there are certainly translated visual novels that cater to your tastes. For example, I think Princess Evangile would be right up your alley, but it is another 50 hour one. Still, it's a thing you can consider, there's definitely no shortage of good things to read out there.

But, most of the good games are actually pretty long, honestly. How about one of the translated ones in this list though? They're a bit shorter.

Yeah but then i think, 'why did they implement unlockable endings in the first place?' With that thought i might as well read them. But with THIS thought it feels like the MC is a manwhore. I didn't even make it through a 2nd ending in grisaia.

>>14110739
>Reading is good.
No doubt, but it's completely pointless to read something you aren't interessted in, which makes reading just boring or unfulfilling.
If i'm reading a VN i can remember better what i just read, maybe you know what i mean? When you read a book and finished a page and while you're at the next page you go like 'wtf did i read last page?'.
In that regard, I will have a look at them tomorrow, Thanks.

>> No.14111180

I would actually think that for people who are new to VNs, it's better for a game to not have choices, so they don't get confused about what to do. Means they just have a book to read. And since they start with that game, they won't know any better about the other ones having choices.

Personally I am not a big fan of choices myself. I kind of dread that the story will eventually be interrupted by some meaningless choice when I'd rather just read without interruptions. Also Dread of the grave is really good.

>> No.14111251

>>14111180
I also feel that way. Fork sections for splitting story is fine, but when it is just point collecting that isn't even obvious what the points do it is terrible.

Saya no Uta for example has perfectly fine choice system.

Never7 for example was terrible because if I accidentally was too nice to someone in the beginning, it prioritized over being nice to another girl later. So I had to remember to be an asshole at the start to not accidentally get too many points.

Like the other person said, that's not all that likely, but still, what's important to me is it wasn't the first. I don't want that game to be "the one where everything started going downhill." People tend to forget that in addition being fluent in both the original language and the language you're translating into, you need to be a competent writer in the language you're translating into as well.

Those are the three necessities of translating. These days we're lucky to get translators with one of them. I'm so depressed.

>> No.14112104

Don't be stupid. You can't be a competent writer without being fluent in the language in which you write. So what is needed is being fluent in the original language and being a good writer in the target language. Two things.
Saying you need to be fluent in the language you're translating into is just redundant.

>> No.14112139

>>14112104
Well, if you put it that way, then I guess yeah.

Though in the industry where even in professional circles we have barely one or two translators who know how to write, I thought it would still be useful to differentiate those who at least know the language from the fan-"tls" by ESLs.

>> No.14112508

There are people who know the language but have to real talent for it, there are plenty of people like that translating today. Of course there are people that don't know either language and are translating anyway. That's why the scene is ded.
