This thread is for the discussion of untranslated Japanese visual novels/eroge.

What are you playing? What are you looking forward to? What have you finished? You know the drill.

did anyone else try Sorairo Innocent trial? I wasn't interested at first but I decided to take a quick look at it because Its a title from AkabeiSoft3, my favorite eroge company. and I was surprised, I expected something like Ao no Kanata, but it was differient. This one focus more on the slice of life part. all the heroines are really attractive, the art is pretty nice and the setting is cool, I didn't expect to take interest in Ultralight Aircraft before this. The only bad part is the horrible and complete shit MC. I thought eroge writers stopped making the self-insert beta MCs anymore. Except for his knowledge on airplanes he is beyond saving. It felt like I was playing with PrettyxCation MC.

Anyway, this game is my most hyped one next month, If you like comfy moege don't miss it.

Anyone played either Traveling Stars or Tenkiame yet? How are they so far? The former has good sales but not so good ratings on EGS, while the latter is the other way around.

I'm playing both of them:

Traveling Star's common route is pretty good, I'm at the end of common route and I really enjoyed so far, will read my first heroine route today. As I metioned at >>14073497 the age thing was a little bothersome but I decided to ignore that, other than this I dont have any problem with it. The VA's were sound kinda bad at the start, but they grown into me as I play. All of heroines are pretty charming too, except saya, she just fucks every fucking scene she appears. Thanks to god that she doesn't have that much screen time and game lets you choose events of the day.

In short so far it definitely doesn't deserve the score it got from EGS, it should be 75-78 imo.

For Tenkiame, It has the second best e-mote I have ever seen (first one is Witch garden without a doubt), and have a really relaxing countryside feeling. As a someone who likes that kind of setting, I'm enjoying it more than traveling stars to be honest.

As I said I'm only at the common route so I dont know how was her performance at h-scenes etc, but so far I think Chloe's VA did a great job, or maybe best in the game. Her voice definitely fits into that kinda cool vampire personality, I'd like to see her more for sure.

But yeah Saya's voice was pure annoying as her personality, I dont think she'll be able to find many jobs in this industry. Also I didnt like the elf's voice too, she sounds just too unnatural.

>sci fi VNs
Chaos;Head, Steins;Gate and Chaos;Child. The first is okay though not that memorable but is needed for the sequel, Chaos;Child was lot more enjoyable in my opinion and Steins;Gate is one of my favorite VNs in general. It's also standalone so you don't need to play the other games in series.
Chaos;Child is sadly only available for consoles so you're stuck unless you have a jailbroken machine or are willing to import.

Also check out Nakazawa's sci-fi games. Ever17 is mostly pretty great with some boring middle parts, Remember11 is fantastic save for the extremely shitty (lack of) ending. I/O is good too, but goes to shit after the first five routes and Root Double was also pretty enjoyable save for the extremely boring final route. If you're playing Root Double get the PS3 / Vita Xtend Edition if you can. I heard they fixed the shitty pacing of the final route and moved some of the boring, needless flashbacks into post-game extra section.

If you're into mecha there's Baldr series, Muv-Luv and Muramasa. Baldr Sky Dive 1 & 2 have fantastic gameplay portions.
I'm not sure if you can exactly call Muramasa sci-fi (it's alternate history with flight-capable sentient power suits whose explanation is something between science / magic), but it has quite a lot of military stuff and shit about war especially in the final route.

Then there's (spoilered the game's name in case since it's a sort of genre shift, HINT: it's written by Tanaka Romeo) Saihate no IMA.

The game consists of one long common route with only brief branches in the middle. Which pair you selected the most (or was it which pair you selected in a certain branch?) decides whose epilogue you see. After clearing all the epilogues the game jumps straight to the final ending.

I'd suggest saving Habaki & Rindou for the last and Yakou & Ryuusui right before them, though on the other hand the first "route" you choose probably ends up having the most impact since having to replay the whole game and the brief branches 4 god damn times really fucks with the pacing. Thank god there was a chapter / scene skip.

tl;dr I'd personally recommend
Keishirou & Sakuya > Soujirou & Shiori > Yakou & Ryuusui > Habaki & Rindou

Thanks, I'll follow the order you suggested. And yeah, I just finished reading Dies Irae about a week ago so everything is still fresh in my mind.

>one long common route with only brief branches in the middle
This actually sounds more appealing to me than splitting the story up into four short stories. I was a bit worried about that since the game is supposedly a lot shorter than Dies.

>> No.14077446

Finally finished Rance 03. The plot was interesting, a lot of the characters were enjoyable to read about and some of jokes made me chuckle, which is more than a lot of comedy games manage (and less than what some serious ones end up doing). It's definitely the best out of the Rance games I've played (01 and 2).

Still, there was one thing about it that I found annoying: the gameplay. While the battle system was competent and an integral part of the game, it was infuriating at times. There were occasional boss fights that turned out to be a pain to deal with and while trying to figure out the best combination of skills and characters to get your underleveled party through a fight, trying the same thing several times had the hadit of ruining the pacing of the scene. Mind you, there were few formations that make your party basically unkillable while you can slowly chip away the enemy's health so it wasn't that big of a deal.

Also, random encounters. Fuck random encounters. The cards in the dungeon are one thing, those I can deal with, but the game gave me a fucking random encounter almost every time I traveled between towns. They were also completely random, varying from small fries you can one shot to party wipe. Not to mention some fights begin right as you enter a location, which means your carefully laid plans can go up in flames before you even reach the enemy.

Anyway, I'm thinking of skipping 4 and its side stories until the remake comes out and moving onto 5D. I've heard some good things about Kichikuou, but I'm not a huge fan of its style of gameplay so I'll probably play it sometime later, maybe after 04, maybe sooner. Either way, is there anything significant in 4 that would affect my enjoyment of the rest of the series or is it safe to skip?

Strictly speaking the only truly must play games plot wise are 03, VI, IX and obviously X when it is released.

They are the games that relate to the central narrative of the game.

First two games just introduce some characters.
IV is pretty useful in regards to Rance IX (III, IV and VI are good for IX, Magnum for working out what happened in the true end)
It doesn't impact any other games.
4.1 and 4.2 are pretty much irrelevant. Genri and Kisara make appearances later and the assassin is referred to in IX.
5D just introduces a couple of characters and has a major Feliss event.
Sengoku has a pretty critical event to Rance's motivations in the next two games (but Quest doesn't have much of a plot and narratively Patton is the protagonist of IX)

there was so much I wanted to write about this game, but now I'm just baffled by that final path...wat. wtf even happened?

still, it made for a nice catharsis after all the suffering, and I actually appreciate that they kept it subtle instead of going off with some meaningless explanatory infodump in the end. it's not like you can sensibly resolve a groundhog day type scenario in the first place.

elsewhere, the art of rin-sin with the animated CGs and sprites (especially the lips, even if they werent't fully synchronous) was great, and the same goes for the music of keishi yonao (though I have no idea for which specific tracks he was responsible). at the very least, I can say that I don't regret my time playing this game, I also give it credit for making me stay up until half past seven one time.

Erimo is a even worse case than that, Erimo was literally thrown in for poor and stupid reason. At the very least with Croix you have Aster gushing over her whenever she gives him attention and it's shown that Croix herself likes Aster. Erimo gets almost nothing.

>Less wives
The story is all about Aster wanting more wives so he can fuck more women, Less Wives defeats the purpose and your missing the point. I found Towa to be cute but rather boring, I'd rate most of the wives above her and Erimo is clearly dead last

Just finished Subahibi, and there's a few things I'm failing to understand.

Two cases are shown in which Takuji knows more than he should be able to. The first is as mentioned in 終ノ空II, the phrase 終ノ空, which appeared only in the amusement park scene of Rabbit Hole I. The second is Zakuro's conversation the rooftop, right before her suicide, albeit with names replaced with Riruru. The former can have some fairly mundane explanation such as Takuji having at some point visited the attraction himself (unless it only exists in the dreamworld?), but the latter I can't find a simple explanation for.

Ayana is another point of confusion. What she is, and what her purpose in the story is are both unclear to me. She, like Takuji above, also demonstrates knowledge beyond what she should be able to have learned as a normal human, such as when she implies she knows the consequences of the one choice in Insects. Her repeated disappearing acts also strongly suggest she's not a normal human. Many characters observe her so for her to be an illusion/delusion she would have to be shared. She could be something along the lines of what Yuki was in 向日葵の坂道, though I'm also fairly unsure of what that is.

Ayana's hypothesis #7 in 終ノ空II can explain these things, but as Yuki notes, that opens the possibility for any number of crazy explanations and is as such fairly unsatisfactory to me. Can anyone shed some light on these mysteries?

Also, Kimika best girl.

>> No.14087267

Just finished RNG the video game aka Rance 5D.

Who the fuck thought any of this was a good idea?

For anyone who doesn't know, the combat in that game works completely on dice. You have 3 party members with skills on numbers 1-6 which you can move around as you wish between battles. Every round of combat a dice is thrown and characters use whatever skill is in the resulting number. This means you can spend turns spamming a completely useless move or an enemy can land on an instant kill move three turns in a row (yes, there are skills that literally one-shot everyone). Whether you win or lose is completely based on random chance.

Not only is the combat random, exploring is too. There is a roulette table with coloured orbs and you get whatever encounter the wheel lands on. You can spend time to add certain kind of orbs in the wheel and there are items you can use to always land on certain kind of encounter.

Speaking of time, the game is timed. You have only a certain number of actions for each chapter before it's game over. Picking items up, talking to someone and even opening the menu all take time. The fact that some puzzles rely on you just stumbling into something certainly doesn't help. To finish a chapter you need to land on an event five times, but the number of them resets to 1 after every time you get one.

While the plot and characters weren't awful per se, they weren't that great either. I'd say it's barely better than original 2 and about as short, if not shorter. The "gameplay" was just a pain though, and my horrible luck fucked me over several times, forcing me to repeat simple encounters and drag the game on far longer than it should. This is definitely the worst Rance game I have played thus far and if it was longer I wouldn't have been able to finish it.

5d is basically a filler game that servers to introduce Rizna, Copa and a very important scene for Feliss. The gameplay is a gimmick but it's very easy to abuse the wheel with save file scumming and comes with the bonus of being easy and fuck on top of being a rather short entry

It's most definitely not the worst entry in the series though even if we ignore remakes, 02 is still the worst in the series even with Kaikai making it "playable"

Thankfully because it's short you can now move on to the best entry in the series in my opinion, VI.

Outside a couple of puzzles (like that fucking teleport maze with Bard? and Sill) I didn't have any particular problems with it. It may be just my nostalgia for shitty 90s dungeon crawlers that made it bearable though. 5D in comparison was just annoying due to how little I could affect anything. Here you go dude:

The phrase tsui no sora likely comes from a jumbled up memorization of that one beach scene where Yuki is doing exercises with them.
If I remember correctly, that Riruru Zakuro scene comes after Zakuro's death has already happened and Takuji/Yuki was there to witness the last few seconds of it. The Riruru version is rather short and the character names replaced with Riruru, so it's possible that it's just a memory of the last few seconds before her death.

Ayana is a metaphor for what is unknown/outside of language. This is made clearer by the way she only refers to herself in name alone. Going with the main theme of the story, the mystery of what Ayana is isn't supposed to be resolved.
This goes together with the ending hypothesis, where anyone of them could be correct and it's a waste of time trying to think too hard about it.

Not sure I agree with this explanation. Neither Yuki nor Takuji were on the roof, and it would be hard to hear from ground level. Takuji specifically was waiting for the elevator when it happened. Though Takuji is not exact the most reliable of narrators, so I suppose I can accept it being him being on the roof but repressing the memory.

This makes a lot of sense too. Maybe I should go back and read Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus, which I neglected to before playing the game.

I only read Ryouka's route so I can't speak for the other ones, but as far as the common route and her route the food wasn't the main part of it. While the main part of the common route was the restaurant, they didn't exactly go into extreme details about cooking or food itself. I was pleasantly surprised that there was only one scene with girls repeating how delicious something was.

My favorite part of the game was the mood and pacing; it really feels like a slow, quiet village. While it isn't exactly the most exciting, the plot still moves at a steady pace and never felt boring or tedious from what I read. Seeing the protagonist and Ryouka slowly become a couple was great, also how they handled the little point of drama was refreshing as well.

Also, at the end of the day a lot of these are "social games" in the sense that if you couldn't talk about them with people (or post screenshots to Twitter or whatever) you wouldn't play them.

I can't imagine anything like a traditional VN remotely succeeding in this particular way, though. Maybe if they were serialized like manga or the way actual novels were back in the day they could catch a piece of this "I have fifteen dollars to blow right now, what do" market.

I realize that's probably something that'll get explained later but even I'm getting a shit-ton of unpleasant complicated feelings and I'm usually okay with this stuff.

Should mention I'm on the Swan Lake twins' route and the way they're balancing the fairy tale with the actual plot/story is quite interesting. Artstyle is so gorgeous it shouldn't need pointing out, and I love how Odile's theme has the Black Swan Princess' theme from the actual ballet mixed in.

Also talking about main heroine shifts, I really like this twist where the main heroine turns out to be a different heroine from the one shown in the cover and the one hinted to be the main heroine in the first half of the game. Special points if the real main heroine turns to be superior to the "fake" main heroine. A recent example was ヒマワリと恋の記憶 which also surprised me pleasantly (picture, top = "fake" cover shown in the game box, bottom = real cover after twist).

Oh, that was my favorite scene I'd say after the final scene where they fly out and rip out the pages of the fairytale books (Fairytale Requiem?). The girl in the black dress being Dorothy was pretty obvious since it was hinted at all the time, but Ikeno's dedication (and naivety) and the climax of their reunion was beautiful. Also the whole thing with the drugs was kind of shocking, it's rare to see non-nukige touching these themes.

I'm surely expecting more from the writer. It's her first work, it seems (not counting Teito Hiten as she was assistant).
Still, the best aspect was the art. CGs were beautiful.

Daiteikoku

On the image. Rance 03 was released on the 26th of August (two weeks ago) and is pretty good but in my opinion inferior to Evenicle. Early days yet on EGS but the median is 85 and the mean is 83 which seems a bit right (maybe take 1-2 from both scores to take into account the full Rance game released after VI and Sengoku factor).

If you don't want to play all the Rance games the most important ones plot wise are 03, VI, Sengoku and IX so at bare minimum they are the ones you should play.

01 is nice but not really required as is Magnum.
IV doesn't have a remake yet and whilst it does set up some plot lines for IX, VI is far more important there.

Don't bother playing Quest with out VI because half the fun for the first half of the game is getting to use characters from the previous games - half of which are from VI

Rance I is certainly not worth it. Just do 01
Rance IV is freeware

No I shouldn't. 7th expansion is basically synonymous with WTC in the same way Microsoft is synonymous with Windows.

Impossible. She's a menace. She lost control of her psychic abilities and destroyed a whole theatre, killing who knows how many people, after which she took no responsibility, and in fact, when scolded, hijacked a koubu and went on to destroy more property. When caught that time, she plays the "where am I? what happened?" Card, proving how dangerous she really is, but then everyone just had a good laugh over it. Unbelievable. To not want child Psychers with no control over themselves to die is to not be committed to saving the world.

I wonder what kind of brain disease you should have to call daiakuji better than Rance 03 or Evenicle.

So guys I just uh finished White Album 2 coda routes and wow what an experience. First time a VN did this to me. Cried so many times I can't even remember. Best part has to be Setsuna and Kazusa fighting each other for Haruki haha. Kazusa Normal End is the the best IMO. Everyone got fucked up yet again thanks to Haruki cheating (having sex with Kazusa 24/7!) but after a year Haruki and Setsuna got back together. As they say time heals all wounds. Setsuna nearly gave up on Haruki but thanks to a phone call with Kazusa she knew that she loved Haruki with all of her body and soul. Just wanna say my impressions on this kamige =D

>Kichikuou Rance, Sengoku Rance, Daiakuki and Daibanchou in his top tier.
I wonder what type of games is his preference

03's gameplay was pretty average.

Telltale managed it with TWD.

>> No.14101151

>>14101103
There is no real player agency in most of Telltale's games and certainly no routes of any description. They are very much linear experiences with slight branching. Muv-Luv Alternative is the closest VN equivalent I know, or it would if it was chopped into small pieces. It's a bad comparison as they're two completely different mediums aimed at two different markets.

I'd say almost any fully animated vn would be close to TWD.

>> No.14101614

School Days is a thing, you know. The difference between TWD and a VN is that the former plays much more like an RPG with dialogue trees while a VN would give you an occasional choice.

Visual Novels are just what it says in the tin: visual NOVELs. VNs, even the ones with a lot of animation, still use text as their pimary means of storytelling.

How do you guys feel about skipping parts in a moege? Like just holding ctrl and blazing past. On the one hand, it feels gross to not read every bit of a VN. On the other hand, I'm only interested in half of the characters here and the scenes not involving them are kind of boring so I want to skip them. What do you think? The only time I recall actually skipping anything in a VN was the lacrosse arc in Muv Luv.

Of coursh. TWD is praised by critics for great story and text.

>> No.14101765

I often just skim through scenes I don't really care about, but keep my eyes open for anything relevant or interesting. Keep in mind that if you don't give a character a chance you'll never like them, just their archetype. Like, I usually hate tsundere's but occasionally, once in every few dozen game, I find one that's actually likeable and I would've missed it if I didn't pay attention to her.

>> No.14101773

It's basically an interactive movie. You can get dialog subtitled as well as sound effects spelled out but it relies on animation to tell the story.

>> No.14101782

>>14101765
It's not that I don't like their characters, it's just I'm really interested in two particular characters and anything between me and their routes is just an obstacle I don't want to deal with. This common route seems pretty long so I'm already acquainted with the other characters

I know where you're coming from. Personally I like to read games that are fun enough to read in general but occasionally I do end up playing a mediocre or boring game with one good heroine, in which case I do tend to skim through decent amount of pointless scenes knowing that I'll probably never play the rest of the routes and odds are those scenes won't play into the one I'm interested in.
My advice would be to play better games.
