Still busy watching Ryomaden.
On episode of 30 of 48 now.

Except for some minor issues its really, really good.
At some point the Main role jumps between cities with every scene it seems. It kind of takes away the sense of distance he must be covering by travelling. It also can be quite confusing at times like: 'Wait, what, where is he now again?' having you to rewatch a certain scene.

There arent any real fillers to speak of either so far. Infact many things happen so fast and in quick succession its hard to follow. I wish there'd be more scenes to just breath and relex from all that informative input.

Historical accuracy and information is astonishing. But I assume since its the purpose of this drama its to be expected.

The music is used very subtle, its great and you dont get bored by it.

If you enjoy historical stories around and before the meiji restoration I highly recommend to watch ryomaden. Its a really mature series.

Ugh, I am just way to busy these days...
Anyway, lets get going.
Your list for Download and Torrents I have nothing to add to, since they include pretty much all of my sources aswell.

How about adding streaming sites to that list?
I know for many this is a no-go in here, but I am pretty sure some newcommers or guys with a slow connection would appreciate a stream over a download.

One very good one is probably http://www.dramanice.tv

Now, regarding the list of 'must watch drama'.
I've been thinking about that for a bit. Its no use if I just spam some drama names now.

How about we brainstorm some key overcategories in genre first and then sort them acoordingly after?
There are way to many different genres so we should probably try to bring them down to the most major ones.

-Romance, Slife of Life, Crime, Family, Action(?) etc?

Then once we figured those out we could get a list started at a place that autoupdates. Pastebin is probably not really good for that.
That way everyone can write down his favourite drama in each category. If one is already listed a number will appear next to it on how often it has been mentioned.

That way we can quickly analyze what everyones top favourite dramas are and those that get mentioned or listed the most are our official 'must watch list' then.

I dont really see it being done any other way since taste is something that varies from person to person anyway.

Any ideas? Everyone is welcome to join.

For the list, I agree with you. What I intended to do was at least a list for beginners. As you can see in /dg/ usually people ask what's a good one to start with.
But yes, something where there's the title of a drama with the number of all the people who recommend it would be great. I can think of... a spreadsheet where people can make edits with the approval of an admin.

That sounds nice, we could do that and put that in the OP for now. Along with your pastebin-link.
That should help a lot for a start to get things rolling.

Let me see, I think we should not recommend the top-notch dramas straight away as it would leave the viewer without any sense of progression if he only had to view worse dramas following our recommendation... but they should not be bad either. The struggle of first time recommendations, lol.

I'd say we should stick to one for each genre.

General Romance: OrangeDays
Its sweet, heartwarming and a bit out of the ordinary to keep the viewer interested. Also its among one of jp's favourites as it seems.

Slice of Life: Kekkon Dekinai Otoko
Easy to follow, amusing, and genereally pretty light weight. I certainly wanted more once I finished watching it, so thats a plus.

Family: I would have said 'Tonbi' but its possibly to hardcore plotwise. Certainly not casual for beginners. Maybe something more light like 'Marumo no Oktike' Thats a pretty cute one and easy to follow aswell.

Action: NO IDEA, you gotta help out here. I don't watch those.

Crime: NO IDEA either. The only one I've watched is 'Soredemo Ikte Yuku' - Its my favourite drama but I wouldnt say its very beginner friendly either. Not sure.

>'Soredemo Ikte Yuku' - Its my favourite drama

Okay, hear me out. I rarely to never go out and post such a long impression about a drama but in this case I just have to.

So, I picked it up and watched it in 2 sessions now.
I am so glad I did. At first I thought its going to be rather cliché after I read the short introduction. Oh boy was I mistaken. Reviews don't do this drama justice.

The first episode had such an impact on me like in no other drama before. I was hooked almost immedieatly. Not to forget the main theme was sung by one of the most recognized voices from the 80/90s. Fantastic!

Overall, what an experience. I am going as far as saying to me this was the most well written and acted drama I know of.
It's a very dark but realistic story that felt believeable for a change.
Also, the story evolves and develops itself in such an interesting way that you think you know whats comming next but then an unexpected turn happens almost every damn episode. But not in a bad way, its all very realistic and detailed. Really refreshing.

The chemistry between the two main actors was impressive until the end, too.
I not only have a new favourite drama myself now but also a new favourite actress (pic).
Such an incredibly natural acting is very rare.

A true emotional rollercoaster and the very first drama I'd give a 10/10 out of the ~hundred I've seen so far. Go watch it!

>Let me see, I think we should not recommend the top-notch dramas straight away as it would leave the viewer without any sense of progression if he only had to view worse dramas following our recommendation
I kind of disagree here. The point of a recommendation list/chart is to get the all time classics / best of the best down, then when you're done with them you move into more niche things / favorite genres and so on. If you really like jdrama then you won't mind going from watching 10/10s to something like 7/10s.

A rare case of good acting in a jaypee drama, still this thing was pretty bad. Story revolves around modern jp society problems and family bonds, but the script feels too much like "a script". A lot of coincidences are used to solve every problem, it's too unrealistic for such a story. In my case I watched it till the end and can't say it was good neither was it bad. The fact that all the events are too staged to be true destroys perception of those events, thus serious drama fails to make you believe in what's happening and deliver any message along the way. As Stanislavski once said: “I don't believe it”.
Stumbled upon wakamonotachi when I searched one of those drama threads. Some guy posted his favourite latest dramas and since nobunaga concerto was high enough to believe in his taste I downloaded a number one thing from his top. Yep, it was wakamonotachi.
I hope the guy who posted a great opinion about soredemo ikiteyuku in this thread won't disappoint me. Going to download it now.
Also, finished watching akiba@deep. Man, that's the first time in life I've been so ashamed for watching what's happening on the screen. It's like somebody wrote an anime scenario but they had no money to turn it into cartoon, so producer went dorama way.

I don't think they really even tried. At times they posted the entire climax in the previous episode's preview, and some of the other foreshadows had all the subtlety of a dump truck on fire. Cheesy as shit too.

Now that I think about it I don't think a single actual development actually surprised me that whole damn show, other than Sakuraba pulling all the strings (which I should have seen a mile off but didn't), but even so I enjoyed the execution of it. We all know the guy was going to go back to his family but the way they did it was the sand was pretty cool.

But yeah, don't watch it for the developments.

Atsu Hime & Ryoma Den especially.

Those two already are 100x 45minutes of action packed and dramatically thrilling content.
Not to forget they put a lof of effort into being as historically accurate as possible.
Ryoma Den had zero fillers over such a long time - I found that very impressive.

And there is a lot more where this comes from.

I recommend the film. It's a million times better and much more jarring. Leaves quite the impression.

Cliches only come to be because someone does it well and others copy it. I'd take well-executed cliche over bad acting and loveless production any day.

Probably doesnt count as neetdom but certainly isolation. Its very uplifting and comical though.
So nothing serious or dramatic. But hell, its well worth the watch. Great show.

I'm searching for dramas similar to IWGP, Vampire Host, akiba@deep, gyarusa. I'm all about the early 2000-2009dramas I think. Anything which is similar to these would be well. But no ott romance. I want sth interesting and or funny. Maybe with a little mystery. Gyaru/Host related. Hope someone can give me some recs

Finished Saya Samurai by Hitoshi Matsumoto a few days ago. While I can't really understand if it tried to be funny, or purposely failed to be funny, it did en exellent job at building the characters, and even though some parts of the ending felt forced, it was really a really good ending, specially when this happened (spoilers)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvNWCm1mxzs

Ive been listening to this a lot the last days..

What's the opinion on Hitoshi as a director in general? I enjoyed Symbold a lot too, more so than Saya Samurai, when you consider all the symbols, the theme of the story and everything.
